25.01.2022 Working with computers and computer repairs on a daily basis, I am often asked - "Which should I buy - Laptop or tower PC?" My answer is basically that unless y...ou travel regularly and need a mobile computer, buy a tower. The main reason I advise this is reliability and the cost of repairs. The following article reinforces this as the correct advice. See more

24.01.2022 Western Digital MyCloud NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices backdoor security issue fix is now available. If you have a WD MyCloud NAS listed in the attached... article, it would be wise to update the firmware of the device promptly. See the article below as well as the WD support page for firmware updates: https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=10440 https://www.bleepingcomputer.com//backdoor-account-remove/

24.01.2022 Great news for computer builders. A high performance Intel CPU with good AMD graphics on chip. Great to see the two main PC and laptop CPU manufacturers working together to make better components for the end users. See the article below:

23.01.2022 Windows 10 suddenly VERY slow or blue sceening? Probably a recent Windows update. Sadly, we have had quite a few customers with their computers running very badly lately and nearly all appear have been related to the Windows update.

22.01.2022 Another privacy and security issue has arisen. This time with Intel chips. Intel is the biggest producer of CPU chips for home and small business computers and ...this security issue appears that it may be widespread. As users, we do have options. AMD also makes CPUs and makes very good CPUs. (The computer I am using to write this is powered by an AMD 8 core CPU - which is my personal preferrence) Despite this security issue, it must be noted that Intel makes excellent chips and components. Hopefully, resolution of this security flaw will not be long in coming. The complexity of both the physical hardware and the software running on our computers (and the multitude of other devices) makes it impossible to guarantee all products will perform flawlessly. Intel has posted an advisory on this issue, the link for which is below as well. https://security-center.intel.com/advisory.aspx https://www.itproportal.com//intel-management-engine-flaw/

21.01.2022 Recently had a situation where a client using Outlook (the program) with iCloud mail could no longer send mail. Receiving was fine but attempting to send mail would cause a never ending error message saying the username and password were not accepted by the outgoing server. This situation started Thursday the week before. Prior to this, the system worked successfully and had done for over a year. Checking for any updates that may have occurred and caused the error showed none... on the date the issue arose. Running System Restore to a time prior to the issue when outgoing mail was successfully going did not resolve the issue. Installing updates, including updating iCloud for Windows did not resolve the issue. Removing the email account and re-adding the account both manually and using iCloud for Windows to setup Outlook also did not resolve the issue. A lengthy call with Apple Support (who I must say was very patient and personable) where all settings were checked and confirmed as correct did not resolve the issue. Changing the iCloud password (as suggested in online forums) did not resolve the issue. Eventually, a workaround was found whereby we used iCloud for Windows to setup Outlook, then disabling iCloud services from starting with Windows, restarting the computer then setting the outgoing server to that of the ISP/RSP finally allowed outgoing mail to be sent. Checking online, this issue appears to have been ongoing and recurring since at least 2011. Unfortunately, the customer's business accounting program - MYOB - only works with Outlook. MYOB, your products are not cheap. They need to work with a variety of email clients, so get your act together and add compatibility to other email clients - and not only email clients that have to be purchased or are locked to only one operating system. (Thunderbird compatibility would be a good place to start) This type of issue, especially if it is recurring and has been known about for an extended period of time is really unacceptable. Microsoft and Apple both derive insane profits from us as purchasers and users of their products. Come on Microsoft and Apple - get your acts together and fix these types of issues. See more

18.01.2022 http://www.pcworld.com//nvidia-quietly-kills-3-and-4-way-s Is it really Nvidias fault? Some people say yes however with barely any support from game developers was it such a surprise?

15.01.2022 Have you got an HP computer and like to use Skype but the Skype audio is garbled and makes Skype unuseable? There is a solution. Call us so we can help you and fix this very annoying problem.

15.01.2022 Our internet is poor compared to other countries. Our government needs to wake up and stop stuffing around. We are being left behind. Look at this article about Canada, which has a significantly larger land mass than Australia.

14.01.2022 Have you kept your smart phone system up to date? You need to ensure you do as this recent article indicates there are many ways unwanted and unauthorised use can be made if you do not keep your phone system updated. As the article notes, it applies to both Apple and Android phones (and probably to other devices with WiFi as well).... https://www.wired.com//broadpwn-wi-fi-vulnerability-ios-an

13.01.2022 Our privacy and security is under threat again. The article published by the BBC on 14 July 2017 with Malcolm Turnbull’s comments on message services using encryption raises concerns that the rights of the majority of Australians will again be trampled and treated with disdain. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40606493... Australia already has laws forcing ISPs and RSPs to retain logs of all our online activities for an extended period. What happens if our government in their infinite "wisdom" creates retrospective laws (laws which apply from a date prior to the law being enacted) as has happened previously? If this happens (again), then things which people did or said which were perfectly legal at the time could become illegal and the person would become liable to be charged with an offence for something that was legal when it occurred! That is both morally and ethically wrong. We at Hi-Tec Computers can help you retain your online privacy and security.

13.01.2022 Had a phone call from a client this afternoon. She had a call from someone saying they were from Telstra. unfortunately, she believed them and gave them access ...to her computer. During the extended call and computer access, she gave them her bank and financial institution details. We have been trying to contact the banks but have been frustrated by a complete lack of emergency contact numbers, insanely ridiculous and long winded recorded phone answering systems, none of which were clear or apparently relevant, and then the recorded service advising to "call back later as we are currently experiencing higher than average calls". WAKE UP BANKS!!! You charge us exorbitant fees and interest, you earn outrageous income from all the little people whose money you hold, but then make it almost impossible to contact you to prevent our funds being misappropriated. Comm Bank - we tried multiple times to contact you to no avail. Suncorp, I finally got through to you on behalf of my client and even tried a three way conversation with both you and my client on speaker phones so you could talk to each other, but then you said my client "failed the identity test" and would not help. What about the security of her accounts with your institutions? This lady is elderly and in a wheel chair. Her computer has now been compromised (as a result of a phishing style call) and her personal details are known to scammers purporting to be Telstra. This is not a computer security issue nor is it the fault of Telstra. Sadly, there are some real scumbags out there who prey on the elderly and people who are misled and frightened into giving these scumbags access and information. This is a call to all banks and financial institutions to put real people on emergency numbers 24 hours a day and to make sure those numbers are BIG and BOLD and EASILY FOUND by your customers who will be very distressed and need help quickly.

13.01.2022 It's probably time to do that upgrade from Windows 7. The recent Wannacry event hit mostly Windows 7 computers as noted in the following article:- https://www.bleepingcomputer.com//over-98-percent-of-all-/

11.01.2022 Did you have a Yahoo account in 2013? If you did, and if you have not changed your password or security since then, it is recommended that you do as soon as pos...sible. Despite Yahoo's announcement that the security breach in August 2013 did not disclose credit card, bank or password details (in clear text), it is not worth the risk to ignore. Change your passwords and other security information.

11.01.2022 Had an interesting phone call from a "Gary Wilson" allegedly from Telstra wanting me to "sit in front of my computer so he can fix it". Strangely, his phone num...ber was "Unknown number" which is so unlike Telstra callers whose callers ALWAYS display a number. "Gary" did not seem impressed when I told him that Telstra calls always display the number they come from and therefore he was a scammer. I didn't even swear or raise my voice at the wanker, but he still hung up pretty quickly...

10.01.2022 We have upgraded our website to a secure website using https. We are also working towards making the website more pro-active with regular informational updates and information for our customers. Great things ahead. :-)

01.01.2022 Windows 10 and privacy breaches is in the news again. The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) says that Microsoft needs to get valid user consent, which it do...es not do. https://arstechnica.com//dutch-privacy-regulator-says-tha/ This is something that has concerned me for some time. If you check Task Manager even after you have reduced the data collection settings to the minimum and also disabled the "Connected User Experience..." service, you will still see MS telemetry sending data out from your computer. This is without the users' knowledge and consent. Privacy and security of private information is extremely important. Unlike the Dutch regulator, I believe Microsoft needs to add a genuine "complete opt out of data collection and telemetry" to all users and to make this option clear and easily accessible. See more

01.01.2022 Many people have now been faced with the "Microsoft Support" scammers. Recently, it was published that Microsoft is assisting the Indian police investigations into these scammers. Let us hope there is some success. We understand the article referred to below talks about the USA and Canada, but the scammers have been busy in Australia as well. https://www.onmsft.com//microsoft-works-with-new-delhi-pol

01.01.2022 Owners of Huawei phones may experience issues with updates and other matters after the recent US government crackdown on Chinese technology companies. Using the open source version of Android may open up new apps and opportunities not available via Google apps, but will likely remove access to apps only available via Google's apps. See the attached article: https://www.theverge.com//18631558/google-huawei-android-s

01.01.2022 Some interesting news regarding the legality of "refurbished" ink cartridges. The article below from Bleeping Computer is about a US patent case by Lexmark. Our laws are different, but it is likely the situation would be the same here. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com//lexmark-loses-supreme-c/
