25.01.2022 Proper backyard hive maintenance helps minimise the risk of bee colonies becoming home to pests and disease. Maintaining healthy hives is an important maintenance practice to detect pests and prevent the spread of disease amongst beehives. Did you know that we offer a customised bee keeping maintenance and advice service for hive owners living in the Adelaide Hills region!... At completion of our work you will receive an inspection certificate that meets Australian Honey Bee Industry Bio Security Code of Practice guidelines as well as the satisfaction of knowing that you have healthy, happy backyard bees ready for the Spring/Summer season ahead.

23.01.2022 This is a piece of honeycomb from a bee swarm we recently re-homed from an old wine barrel. I could stare at the prismatic hexagonal cells built by the honey bees all day. Bees are so amazing!! Honey bees build these cells entirely in the dark to contain their larvae, stores of honey and pollen. Did you know that honey bees consume about 3.8kg of honey to secrete 454g of wax. This is why we like to keep the structure of the comb when we extract and return the wax to the hive. #hivehoney_sa #rawhoney #honeycomb #bees #beekeeping #rawhoney #rawfoods #bremertonwinery #adelaidehills #fleuriuepeninsula

23.01.2022 As a new beekeeper, it can be challenging to identify what you see in the cells of each comb in the hive. This is capped worker brood in our hive today. It is where the brood (baby worker bees) are raised. Bees coat each cell in the broodnest area with a coat of propolis which creates a antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral environment perfect for the queen to lay her eggs.... The cells are capped around day 6 and new worker bees emerge on day 21. How can you identify brood comb in your hive? It is darker than capped honey comb and has a slight bump protruding from the cell where the new bees will emerge from . #beekeeping #bees #savethebees #backyardbeekeeping #rawfood #southaustralianbusiness

In ancient cultures, mead was associated with good health and vitality. this home brew is a good one! 19.01.2022 The different colours of pollen in the honeycomb always interest me. Depending on what plants the bees are collecting pollen from, the pollen colour can range so much, pretty much any colour from the rainbow . Yellow and orange were the feature colours today, most likely from our recent blue gum and daisy flowers. Amazing art work! Such clever little creatures ... #beekeeping #bees #rawfood #savethebees #adelaidehills #southaustralian #honey #honeycomb

18.01.2022 The inspiration and starter seed for our creamed honey was sourced during one of our best family holidays ever to the beautiful pristine Kangaroo Island. There is nothing like being abandoned by your husband during a honey farm visit to talk bees/honey...At least the boys and I got to enjoy the best honey ice cream ever and came home with jars and jars of honey . The bush fires that have devastated the Kangaroo Island landscape, wildlife and Ligurian bees this week is truly... devastating. Our thoughts are with the bees and beekeepers . A really simple way you can help is to buy Kangaroo Island honey or any Kangaroo Island produce/products. #supportlocalfarmers #bees #ligurianbees #kangarooisland #southaustralia #beekeeping

16.01.2022 Today’s rainy afternoon experiment resulted in the creation of this beautiful natural scented beeswax furniture polish. Chris wanted to make a natural furniture polish with our beeswax. A furniture polish without a bunch of chemicals in it. Now who doesn’t want that!! Beeswax is known to penetrate directly into wood giving it a lustrous warm shine. It’s natural, preserves and beautifies wood. I have been polishing our furniture with it this afternoon and our house smells am...azing #hivehoney_sa #beeswaxproducts #bees #southaustralian #supportlocalsa

11.01.2022 Soursobs might be an annoying weed in the garden but they are a great food source for bees in winter (and today my youngest son and I turned them into great necklaces ). #familybusiness #hivehoney_sa #rawfood #simplicityparenting #honey #bees #beekeeping

09.01.2022 Today is World Bee Day! It’s a day to acknowledge the importance of bees and other pollinators as integral to keeping our planet - and us! - healthy. There a...re so many things we can do to support bee habitats to improve their abundance and diversity. Some suggestions are: don’t use pesticides in your garden, buy raw, local honey (I love Hive Honey sourced from the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu), and when the time comes, plant some bee-friendly flowers and herbs in your backyard. Any other bee lovers out there? me wearing my favourite tie

08.01.2022 Success!! We have new queen bees. Chris attended a queen bee rearing course last month in Adelaide. We have just checked our hive this morning and out of 25 grafts we have 19 new queen bees. He used the Cloake board method which was invented by a New Zealander, Henry Cloake. What’s cool about the Cloake board method is that it allows beekeepers to raise queens with very little disturbance to the hive.... #hivehoney_sa #beekeeping #bees #rawhoney #adelaidehills #fleurieupeninsula #familybusiness

07.01.2022 Did you know that almonds are one of the earliest crops to flower in spring (August). The flowers open before the tree produces leaves. Almonds are generally not fertile so pollination is an important factor affecting crop yield. Tonight our honey bees are heading up to the Riverland to be very important pollinators for this season. #bees #hivehoney_sa #beekeeping #almondpollination2020 #supportlocal #adelaidehills

07.01.2022 Imagine working as the air traffic controller at this busy airport . For landing the bees fly down low when approaching the hive because they are loaded with pollen and nectar (there were several crashes today as the bees stumbled to control their heavy loads whilst landing ). For take off the bees climb up the front of the hive to launch themselves into the air....
