10.01.2022 25th of June is the #worldvitiligo day . . Vitiligo is a relatively common condition in which the skin is unable to produce pigment. ~ 1-2% of people around the globe are affected by this condition. .... . The cause of vitiligo is unknown. It is most likely an autoimmune condition where the bodys immune system attacks its own pigment cells (melanocytes). Family history is seen in ~10-20% of cases. Stress or skin trauma (#koebnerization ) may occur prior or worsen this condition. . . Vitiligo can affect any part of the body appearing as milky-white spots. White hairs can occur as well. . . vitiligo is diagnosable clinically, rarely a skin biopsy may be needed. Other autoimmune diseases associated with vitiligo include thyroid diseases, diabetes and B12 deficiency anaemia, so screening for these may be needed clinically or via blood tests. . . camouflage, sunprotection (as higher risk of sunburns) and psychological support all important for patients as the treatment of vitiligo is usually prolonged and progress can be slow. Unfortunately complete recovery may not be possible especially on the hands & feet. . . Treatment options include topical medications like: corticosteroid, Calcipotriol, Calcineurin inhibitors, prostaglandin agonists or (experimentally) JAK inhibitors. Phototherapy with or without Psoralen (a photo-sensitizer). Systemic treatments (in rapidly progressive severe cases) or surgical treatments (for stable chronic spots) may be pursued. . . In some people with widespread vitiligo, treatment with creams or lasers to remove the remaining pigmented spots (depigmentation treatment) may be considered. . . if you have any concerns talk to your dermatologist. There are numerous misconceptions about vitiligo in large parts of the world, so Its important to build global awareness about this common but forgotten condition. . . 06.01.2022 Are SPF Moisturisers comparable to Sunscreens there has been few studies comparing both, most recent one in 2019. Key points: 1 Differences in terms of chemical formulation between the sunscreen and SPF moisturiser raised the possibility that they would perform differently in terms of absorption of the UV-A radiation... . . 2 Non intentionally, when people asked to apply an SPF moisturizer they will use less amount of the product, especially around the eyelid area (a common site of #skincancer ) . . 3 Differences in the consistency of the SPF moisturizer products were a major contributor to the incomplete coverage found . . 4 Aware that to get a proper protection, you should use at least an SPF 50+ sunscreen. Most SPF moisturizers will be around the SPF15 . . 5 SPF moisturizers usually will be sold in a smaller size tube/ higher cost , I think this contributes (unconsciously) to people using less amount of the product (Remember, adults need at least 1 teaspoon of sunscreen to cover the face, neck& ears) . . At the end of the day, an SPF moisturizer is better than NO SPF at all!! However, why to waste time, money & risk burning your skin/pigmentations / getting a skin cancer from the use of a less comparable product . . Looks like Itchy scaly/ flaky spots and patches, the middle usually looks less red and scaly giving it the classic RING appearance . . 04.01.2022 Folliculitis keloidalis (aka Acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN)) . . a form of chronic inflammation of the hair follicles affecting the back of the head and hairy part of the neck. Presenting as itchy bumps/pimples later hair loss with thick/ bulky scars (keloids). .... . the cause is not well known, believed related to close hair cuts/shaving, secondary bacterial infection or ingrown hair from rubbing helmets or high collars shirts . it is more common in males than females especially with Afro-Caribbean & Middle eastern ethnicity . . AKN is often persistent despite treatments. Start by avoiding the above especially short or razor hair cuts. Topical antimicrobial washes/gel +/- steroid lotions. Your Doctor may need to do steroid injections into bulky lesions. Some cases may requires courses of oral antibiotics or retinoid tablets. Laser hair removal early may help & laser resurfacing or surgery may be needed for the resulting thick scars . .
