24.01.2022 Do you have an interesting chess set that you can loan by the weekend? There is a group in Hobart shooting a TV series and they need some help! They want a novelty chess set, with a King 120mm tall, preferably black and white with faces. A non-Staunton design, more like an Isle of Lewis design. Must be available for hire or purchase in the Hobart area by the 25th of March. Post photos here if you have something of interest.

18.01.2022 Hobart Chess Club Cancellation amid COVID-19 The HCC has been informed by staff at Mt Carmel College that all extra curricular activities, including the meeting of the Hobart Chess Club, have been cancelled indefinitely. We will attempt to contact as many people individually as possible and a notice will be posted on the door to the building where the club usually meets, but please pass the message around the regular Hobart cohort to avoid any unnecessary confusion.... The HCC will contact members in the similar ways when regular meetings will resume. Please continue to enjoy your chess through the many online facilities available, and we look forward to seeing you over the board again. Until that time, stay safe and well.

16.01.2022 The HCC is closed tonight due to the Easter Monday holiday. Wishing everyone a fantastic Easter, and we hope to see you back next week for some Allegro fun! www.tasmanianchessassociation.org/hobart-chess-clu//closed

15.01.2022 Thank you to Ryk Goddard and the ABC team for having me on this morning to talk about the Tony Sturges Memorial and the Black & White Ball. Both fantastic events are raising money for the Tasmanian Chess Association, and are on this week.

14.01.2022 Armageddon chess next Monday night. Come down for this once a year event!

14.01.2022 Last man standing and the only person to take points off GM Smerdon was Peter Wagg, the final position shown when Peter offered a draw, which was accepted.

13.01.2022 Still going on! 90 minutes in and more than half the field are still alive.

13.01.2022 Hello HCC Juniors & Parents! The HCC has decided from Term 4 (starting tonight) the HJCC will commence at 5:30pm, NOT 5pm. This change will make it easier for parents and instructors to get to the club for awesome lessons without having to rush! See you all tonight for a cracking opening to Term 4

12.01.2022 The club will be returning on the 18th of January, and a reminder for those who haven't been before or for a while that we are now located at Guilford Young College, Hobart campus (see other posts and website for detailed directions). We are also looking at options to address the recent surge in chess interest from adult beginners, and be able to cater to all. Whilst Monday nights usually involve tournament games shortly after 6.30pm, there are increasingly players coming looking for casual games, especially those new to chess. We'll post more once we have any updates.

11.01.2022 The Hobart Chess Club is back, and we've got some new digs! The HCC returned to over the board chess and a new regular playing venue on Monday the 7th of September after a lengthy COVID-19 suspension. The HCC still meets on Mondays 5:00pm (Juniors) 6:30pm (Seniors), but is now at Guilford Young College, Patrick Street, West Hobart.... ACCESSING THE VENUE From Patrick Street, go down the drive beside the tennis courts and keep going until there is a glass wall right in front of you. At that point go through the doors on the right. For the time being we have someone on the door but once that changes, you'll need to go through the doors and up one level in the lift to get to the level of the library. The HCC would like to thank Mt Carmel College for hosting us over the past 5-6 years, we wish your school's and student's chess pursuits be novel, decisive, and most of all, fun. www.tasmanianchessassociation.org/hobart-chess-club-venue

06.01.2022 Great blitz tournament last night with a field of 21. Congratulations to Will Rumley and Scott Cohen, finishing on 5.5/7. It's the last fast event for a while though, as next Monday (May 6) sees the start of the annual Club Championship, running over the next few months (May, June and early August, with a break in July where there will be some blitz/rapid events). Time control is 60 minutes + 30 seconds per move. Don't miss Round 1!
