24.01.2022 The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are preparing to welcome the community back through its gates with a number of projects underway behind the scenes. The Gardens received a stimulus package from the Tasmanian Government’s Public Building Maintenance Fund, which was developed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with $302,000 allocated to cover six essential maintenance projects. 22.01.2022 JACQUI and Nat Gray are fighting to introduce laws in Tasmania to allow people suffering from a terminal illness the right to choose how, where, when and with whom they end their life, following their mother, Diane Gray’s 11-month battle with cancer. 20.01.2022 A development application has been lodged by Tasmanian company Ornatas for the construction of the world’s first rock lobster hatchery at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) Taroona research laboratory site. If approved, the site will put Tasmania at the cutting edge of aquaculture by commercialising world-leading research that enables tropical rock lobster production on a commercial scale. 19.01.2022 More than 70 Tasmanian artists and creative organisations will share in more than $1.5 million in State Government funding through its arts, screen and music funds. Among those that received funding for the first stage of the Cultural and Creative Industries Stimulus Package was the Van Diemen’s Band. 09.01.2022 HOBART’S DarkLab has created an alternative outdoor market for locals to sell and purchase fresh produce at ‘In The Hanging Garden’s’ central Cathedral. 09.01.2022 RESEARCHERS are celebrating the recent successful deployment of the University of Tasmania’s state-of-the-art Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) ‘nupiri muka’ in the Amundsen Sea region of West Antarctica. During its second Antarctic summer, nupiri muka completed six missions, including a 60-kilometre round-trip along the sea floor beneath a sea-ice barrier adjacent to Thwaites Glacier, a significant source of Antarctic mass loss and sea-level rise. 03.01.2022 Grace Holliday and Chloe Moore have used their time in isolation to sew ISO cuddle bears to give to people living with disability who are still isolating because they’re at increased risk from COVID-19. Eleven-year-old Grace and 12-year-old Chloe met through sewing lessons at Frangipani Fabrics in North Hobart and later made plans for the ISO bears project via ZOOM.
