24.01.2022 Alopecia X is a name among others used to describe a hair cycle abnormality that affects primarily Nordic dog breeds and Toy or Miniature Poodles. Usually there is a symmetrical gradual loss of hair over the body and caudal thighs, sparing the head and front limbs. Sometimes the guard hairs are lost first leaving a soft "puppy" coat, sometimes both coats are lost. The skin may become blackened or hyperpigmented. Little is known about the cause and only a few conventional treatment options; neutering, melatonin and growth hormones, which do not always work. Tessa was already speyed, already tried the melatonin, and growth hormones can cause side effects. So herbs, homeopathy and some TLC and within a short time she responded and her beautiful coat is returning again.

22.01.2022 Not 100% completed yet, but the new consult room is up and running.

22.01.2022 Milo is up for adoption through Labrador rescue and is here in ACT. He is a gorgeous boy that someone did not want to put the effort in when he was diagnosed with Congenital Lymphodema as a puppy. His first carer in ACT bought him to me and he responded so well to some simple dietary management, homeopathy and herbs before he went to his current carer. He will bring so much joy to any household.

17.01.2022 80-85% of canned food especially cat foods contain a thickener Carageenan. This is a seaweed. Sounds good right? Well think again. Carageenan is processed and alkalised to sulphated polygelactan. This is well documented to cause inflammatory bowel disease like symptoms in many studies from mice, rats, guinea pigs, monkeys and humans. Also known to cause gut ulcerations and tumours. It is also injected under the skin to cause inflammation during experimental trials. Once you get inflammatory bowel issues it can leak bacteria, yeast, toxins and undigested food into the blood stream and set off a host of other diseases. The chemical number for it is 407, but there is not the same regulations to label it on pet food. It is also commonly found in baby foods!

12.01.2022 For a laugh of the day....

12.01.2022 Such a great idea especially for those living alone.

12.01.2022 Finally!!! I so hope this film makes it to Australia. About time these crap ingredients in pet foods gets aired. Sorry about the pre-advert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eVoicSHimI&sns=fb

11.01.2022 I am so pleased I got to see Hercky again last night, my Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) survivor. 3.5yrs ago her blood tests, abdominal fluids and spleen biopsy were indicative of the FIP virus, normally a death sentence to cats. She was underweight, pot bellied, painful and not looking in a good way. I did not promise a positive outcome for her, but we tried all therapies from acupuncture, herbs, homeopathy and supplements. To give her owners credit they provided a rema...rkable diet for her from every meat source possible ie beef to prawns and everything in between, eggs, nutritional yeast, spirulina, and fresh herbs from the garden to keep her fighting fit. And to give Hercky credit she self medicates with eating her own caught mice and rabbits now. I still dont know what worked for her. It would be lovely to have evidence it was one therapy that worked, but time did not permit us to treat her that way. I see her once every 6 months or so for a tune up, and she is one big, beautiful and strong puss. See more

10.01.2022 Mouse was adopted 17 years ago when she was estimated to be between 4-8 years. The owner decided on her being 4 years, so last month that would have made her at least 21 years old. She still enjoys ripping up a cardboard box every night.

05.01.2022 Urinary spraying or inappropriate urination is a stress symptom of cats. More and more we are recognising mental issues related to the gut. Gut flora activates peyers patches, a lymph node in the gut, which sends off messages that helps control our allergies, autoimmune diseases and yes our behaviour. So for Kit Kat who has been inappropriate urinating and digestive issues since a kitten we changed his diet, given him some B12, probiotics and a homeopathic to aid things along. He took to raw diet like a duck to water and within 3 days was eating meats, liver, eggs, heart, sardines and supplements. 4 months later he has had no gut problems and no inappropriate urination since after those first 3 days. Long live a more relaxed and happy Kit Kat.

05.01.2022 Are you after more options for Cranial Cruciate injuries than just surgery? Yes, you do have more options, in fact many cases I see have had surgery yet still arthritis plagues them later in life. Acupuncture can be a very effective alternative. But for MJ he just could not keep himself from bouncing around and kept re-injuring his knee. Since surgery was not an option this special stifle orthotic did the trick. These are tailor made in the USA by Orthopets from a leg cast here, allowing perfect flexion of the knee including swimming use, but stablises the ligaments. MJ is now 100% sound without his orthotic with a stable pain free joint.

04.01.2022 "We're using it as a way to stimulate wound healing on top of the medications that we use."

04.01.2022 For many the New Year represents a chance to start something new, and for others it is a time of reflection. For Holistic Paws it has been a chance to remember all those loved patients that have come through, but this year has been extra busy moving the practice. It has been a tough decision as although the old location was excellent for clients, I have decided to keep the business small and continue the same service rather than to increase it into a full practice. In which ...case this can still be done from a home and the family needs a bigger space now. From now on you can find me at 34 Perry Drive Chapman. The same phone number 02 6231 1324 will continue, although please excuse some teething problems with the voip and modem set up, and the temporary room arrangements while the work room is completed. Thank you for the support over the years, and I wish everyone has a healthy and prosperous 2018. See more

04.01.2022 I started to write a response to the study from Melbourne University Raw Chicken Causes Paralysis in Dogs. But have found others to have beaten me to it. Please read the flaws of the study, and other studies in relation to it held within this article. Gut flora is an intrinsic part of our immune system. Balance the gut and it will prevent so many health issues. The microbe is nothing. The terrain is everything. Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) https://www.dogsfirst.ie/raw-chicken-does-not-cause-paraly/

03.01.2022 Homeopathy works. Joey came to me nearly 12 months ago with a 6 month history of Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), an autoimmune disease of the skin where ones own body attacks the nasal tissue. In these cases it is around the nose and exposure to sun makes it worse. We started on herbs which held it at bay over winter, but as spring time came his nose worsened again. So we started homeopathy. Within 1 week his nose started healing. The big test was over summer and his nose is still looking really good without the side effects of steroids and allowing the pleasures of sun baking.

02.01.2022 Do you know why our pets are addicted to commercial dry foods? It actually is not because the food is rolled in chicken fat, it is actually because of the maillard reaction and the byproducts 5 hydroxymethyl furfural and acrylamid. The maillard reaction is the reaction of sugars and amino acids under high heat giving rise to the bronzing or browning effect and new flavours similar to bread cooked into toast or hot chips. In pet foods it is 129x higher in dog food and 40x high...er in cat food than in human consumption. The problem is these byproducts are carcinogenic in rat studies, though there is no studies if they are carcinogenic to humans or dogs or cats and there is question on what is a safe amount in human consumption. But cancer is 1:4 in humans and 1:2 in dogs.......hmmm food for thought anyway. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25088431 See more

02.01.2022 Do you think acupuncture is painful for pets? Booboo does not think so. In fact he quite often prefers to sit on my lap during sessions, but in this photo he chose to sit between his owner and myself with an occasional scratch under the chin. There is no evidence of how long needles should stay in for during a session, and studies have shown the same effects of acupuncture for needles left in for 5 mins or 20 mins. But I find that once animals have the endorphines released from acupuncture and allowed time during the first treatment to relax with it, they associate it with a good feeling and enjoy coming in, much like Booboo.
