21.01.2022 There is an ongoing debate about women and the didgeridoo - yet there has not much been told about the women who are connected to the tradition of this unique instrument and working hard to create stunning didgeridoos. These ladies on the photos are one of the most skilled yiaki makers I have ever met, who have all the knowledge and experience to find the finest trees in the bush suitable for top-quality yiaki. I am feeling lucky for every minute I can spend in the bush with them, while doing one of the hardest exercise: collecting raw yiaki. A big shout out to Djalu's wife Dhopiya and two daughters Zelda and Lena for the hard work. 20.01.2022 Playing yiaki is a healthy choice - it strengthens your respiratory system, helps to fight several illnesses and maintains your mental health. At the same time, the way you play might have some negative consequences. According to senior Yolu songmen and didgeridoo players, the traditional playing styles went through a significant change in Northeast Arnhem Land during the last few decades. The beat and tempo accelerated to fit to the 'modern-lifestyle', the rhythms become ...faster, and players prefer shorter, high-pitched instruments with high backpressure that serve the new musical needs. Djalu Gurruwiwi, one of the well known masters of the instrument says that the new playing style puts more stress on the player's body and mind, therefore extensive playing is not good for the health. He often highlights the benefits of the slower 'old-style playing', and instruments with medium backpressure. Listen to this short video, and what he got to say about this topic. See more

15.01.2022 While we are working on our new website, let us introduce you to one of the new cool items that we are adding to our stock. Smoking pipes are part of the traditional life and material culture of the different Indigenous groups of Australia. In Arnhem Land, it was introduced by the Indonesian traders who were visiting the northern shores of the continent for hundreds of years, well before the 'modern' history. In Northeast Arnhem Land the most popular material Yolu use for ...making pipe is a tree called bamutuka, that has soft heartwood so it can be hollowed out easily. Up until around the '70s, smoking pipes (luiny) and tobacco (arali') was only allowed for 'Elders' or clan leaders, and even touching pipes by others was punished by the Traditional Law. Making and smoking luiny is still in practice by the older generation. If you want to order luiny through our new online shop, keep your eyes on our news, more to come soon! #pipesmokingcommunity #yolnguart #arnhemlandart

13.01.2022 We wish you a happy and peaceful New Year! 2020 was a tough year for many, we hope that we all can learn from it, leave the pain and suffering behind to step into a fresh new year with hope, strength and enough wisdom to grow and thrive. We wanted to share this short video that we captured this afternoon in Birritjimi while Djalu was sending his New Year’s Blessing to every direction. Today is Djalu’s birthday - we gave a big hug to Old Man on behalf of the Didgeridoo Commun...ity. Thank you for your open heart, wisdom and helping hand Djalu, be happy and healthy this year! 09.01.2022 Yidaki by B. Wunungmurra

08.01.2022 When I was a young man, I used to paint bark, make dancing belts, clap sticks and didjeridu. My parents were not artists. My father was a clever man. He taught me a lot of things about our way, our stories. Bob Burruwal is a ceremonial leader, songman and celebrated artist from Central Arnhem Land, living in Ankabadbirri outstation with his family. He is well known for his fibre artworks, sculptures and mago - or didgeridoo, that are prized for his fine selection of wood, a...nd exceptional acoustics. We often stock didgeridoos from Bob, however his masterpieces are sold quick. Click on the link below to see his didgeridoo available from the latest stock update (see previous post), and do not miss this opportunity to own an original Bob Burruwal mago. https://hollowlogdidgeridoos.com//bob-burruwal-mago-hlm-24/ Photo credit: Maningrida Arts & Culture

06.01.2022 Good news for the collectors of traditional music of the Top-End: Songs from the Northern Territory 5 CD box set reprinted, and available on our website! These recordings are essential resources for didgeridoo players who are interested in the traditional playing styles of the Top-End. Recorded by prominent ethnomusicologist Alice M. Moyle between 1962 and 1963: The material reproduced in this five set of discs has been selected from field (tape) recordings at Oenpelli, M...ilingimbi, Yirrkala, Rose and Roper Rivers, Angurugu and Umbakumba (Groote Eylandt), Bagot (Darwin) and Beswick Creek Reserve." 05.01.2022 A shout-out from the windy Northeast Arnhem Land, played by Malay Yunupiu. Malay is the didgeridoo player of the Yothu Yindi and East Journey bands, he is also an 'in demand' ceremonial player. We often receive questions from didgeridoo players like: "What are the best ways of learning 'traditional-style", or "How can I improve my playing?". Or answer is: 1. Listen to traditional players as mush as possible; we believe that a short, 21 seconds long video can teach you m...ore than any verbal instruction. You have to be patient and never stop learning. 2. Make sure you are playing on didgeridoos made by the traditional custodians of the instrument. Have a good selection of didgeridoos that teach you and guide you through the life-long journey of playing this unique instrument. Thank you for the yiaki waa Gudjuk! #yidaki #traditionaldidgeridoo #didjeridu

04.01.2022 Amazing Djalu’ Gurruwiwi yidaki played by our very own Mike Edwards! It is a fast, powerful and responsive instrument for those, who would like to improve their percussive playing style. You can see more details here: https://hollowlogdidgeridoos.com/bu/djalu-gurruwiwi-yidaki/

01.01.2022 The Aboriginal Sound Instruments is a great resource for those who would like to learn about the traditional music of the First Nations People of Australia. The recordings capture of the sounds of traditional instruments from Western Australia, Far-North Queensland and the Northern Territory. You can listen to rear instruments like seed pod rattles, goanna skin drums or the hollow log drum used only in ceremonial context, also chapsticks, boomerang and early recordings of d...ifferent didgeridoos. The original booklet that contained many precious information unfortunately does not accompany this latest edition, however you can find the map of the traditional sound instruments on our website (with the generous courtesy of AIATSIS) https://hollowlogdidgeridoos.com/home/didgeridoo-basics/ To find more information about this and other resources, visit our website: https://hollowlogdidgeridoos.com/product-category/music/
