25.01.2022 a) Eastern Rosella? b) Crimson Rosella? c) a little from column a, a little from column b. Correct answer: c) #naturalhybrid ... Thanks Craig A. for sharing your observations!

25.01.2022 Contribute your nature story, just like Peter Boyle: The Possum House http://urbanfieldnaturalist.org Living next to the bush as we do, having possums in the roof is an ongoing hazard. The previous owners of our house, after moving the possums out and sealing up the roof cavity entrances, built a possum house in a nearby tree. When we moved in, possums lived there. In the day we sometimes saw them through binoculars, and at night wed occasionally find one on our back veranda.... Several times we observed stand-offs between gangs of noisy miners surrounding the house and the possums inside. Invariably through the power of inertia the possums stayed on. For a few years the possum house seemed empty until a family of kookaburras took it over as their nest. This was in the last weeks of my partners life, the Australian anthropologist and eco-philosopher Deborah Bird Rose. On the morning of her funeral the two remaining baby kookaburras finally took flight. One landed under the house, began climbing the stairs to the veranda just as the possum used to do, then successfully flew off. Now the possums are back in the possum house. Last week my daughter surprised one on the veranda just outside the kitchen door, its head buried in a bag of Bokashi maze, probably not ideal food for possums. I went outside to have a chat and encourage it to return to the bush. When it noticed me it pulled its head out of the plastic bag, looked around and quickly made its way down the stairsI can only assume, on its way back to the possum house. 24.01.2022 Galah displaying aggressively above a tree hollow. Thanks Olivia C. for sharing this observation #galah #hollowsashomes #habitat #treehollow

24.01.2022 Always good to spend some time listening to the wind through the trees, the sounds of the bush, the creek crawling by. Oh, and snow gums, snow gums are stunning.

24.01.2022 Big parrots require big nest boxes. These are often 1.5m tall and require a considerable amount of effort to position in a tree. Thanks for sharing Simon!

24.01.2022 They would be worthy of something the Chaser would produce. It would be hilarious if it wasnt so serious, ...the videos ignored the scientific reality of the environmental damage caused by native forest logging and were propaganda. https://www.theguardian.com//australian-government-youtube

23.01.2022 Many species that use tree hollows are seldom seen by people, gliders are one example. Thanks Ree for sharing these sugar glider pictures We look forward to reading the findings of your research. All, if youre intrigued when you see plants/animals contribute a short story (~200 words) & a pic to @urbanfieldnaturalist Facebook Group http://urbanfieldnaturalist.org ... #habitat #hollowsashomes #sugarglider #glider #treehollowhome

23.01.2022 Bad news... Total deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon from January to June was 1,890 sq miles (3,069 sq km), up 25% from the same six-month period last year. https://amp.theguardian.com//brazil-firing-amazon-deforest

21.01.2022 9-gram Striated Pardalote exiting it’s tiny tree hollow home. This ‘home’ is only used during the breeding season. That means even tinier eggs & chicks in the hollow. Thanks Glenn for sharing this beautiful picture.

20.01.2022 Pacific Black Duck with 10 duckling! You know it, they’ve come from a tree hollow home #hollowsashomes #habitat

20.01.2022 Australian owlet-nightjars shelter during the day in tree hollows, they are out hunting insects during the night. Tree hollows provide vital habitat for over 300 Australian vertebrate species & 1000s of invertebrates Thanks Sam for sharing!... #hollowsashomes #habitat #australianowletnightjar #nightjar #treehollow

19.01.2022 We need tree hollows for these stunners: Major Mitchell Cockatoo.

19.01.2022 Protecting the environment is a national failure: The Australian National Audit Office found the federal environment department has been ineffective in managing risks to the environment, that its management of assessments and approvals is not effective, and that it is not managing conflicts of interest in the work it undertakes. https://www.theguardian.com//morrison-government-has-faile

19.01.2022 Rainbow lorikeets at their nest within the trimmed palm fronds in a suburban front yard. This nest is an example of adaptation, as this species typically use a tree hollow. This adaptation also indicates a need to find novel nesting habitat because of insufficient tree hollows. Importantly, rainbow lorikeets are aggressive and push other animals out of nesting hollows. I encourage you to visit and contribute a story to: http://urbanfieldnaturalist.org ... #habitat #rainbowlorikeet #palmtreenesthollow #hollowsashomes #urbanfieldnaturalist

18.01.2022 Does your home have as grand an entrance? It might be a sign that an overweight possum lives here. It should be no surprise that many species ‘squeeze’ into smaller than expected entry holes. Thanks John M. for sharing!

18.01.2022 Nest boxes can be found all over the place, including in national parks - where wed expect to find the best habitat. Of course, tree hollows can be lacking in conservation areas for many reasons e.g. prior logging, fire, prior farming, etc. The best use of nest boxes are planned and monitored. Soon well be sharing a new app to assist with monitoring wildlife use of boxes, cut-in hollows, and tree hollows - so we can all learn more and have better outcomes for wildlife.

17.01.2022 Rainbow Lorikeet nesting hollow selection is quite interesting as it is highly variable. This is one reason Rainbow Lorikeets are increasing their numbers. Another key reason is their adaptability to new foraging resources & humanities obsession with flowering plants. Thanks @amazed.by.australia for sharing your pic of these colourful clowns. ... #hollowsashomes #treehollowhabitat #rainbowlorikeet #habitat #treehollow

17.01.2022 Our societies failure to protect trees (& habitat) that are 100s of years old is upsetting. Our failure to protect cultural sites that are 1000s of years old is a tragedy... Very disappointing.

16.01.2022 Please give 1-minute to participate in our bin-opening survey. Reporting answers of no are as important as yes, I have seen bin-opening. We want to know where this does & does not occur. Thanks! https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSfvkgCX4n5SZ-_gG-/viewform Please share this survey and encourage friends to participate. ... Key areas are the Sydney & Wollongong regions, reports across Oz are welcome.

16.01.2022 Ancient river red gums - they are majestic trees & often a great hollow home for wildlife https://theconversation.com//friday-essay-crafting-a-link-

15.01.2022 We try our best with boxes, yet home improvements are often required. Check out the damage galahs have done over the years. The old box has produced fledglings for over 6yrs. Same boxes. from Todd via Twitter Providing habitat is good, monitoring if it works is essential.

14.01.2022 We have a lot to learn about the flexibility of species when it comes to the use of hollows. Typically we’d say that this hollow is unsuitable, too big, for Rainbow Lorikeets - yet this is was used for nesting. #HollowsAsHomes #habitat

14.01.2022 A beautiful scene to be sure. A few more trees would be nice.

13.01.2022 Concerning news for habitat and the creation & retention of hollow bearing trees for the decades to centuries ahead. Die-back is a serious issue in Australia and recent observations have noted as yet unexplained die-back of parts of in-tact woodland in various parts of Oz. https://insideclimatenews.org//forest-trees-climate-change

12.01.2022 This is really interesting!! Nice work Mick & Dave

12.01.2022 Where are you seeing Rainbow Lorikeets nesting? They are highly adaptable, this is one reason they are increasingly common in many areas. Pics by: Penny Stirling, Feathers Oz, David Croft. ... #habitat #treehollow #hollowsashomes

10.01.2022 What do ya think about this one? Musk Lorikeets running a critical eye over this habitat = potential nest site.

10.01.2022 Have you seen the many and varied designs for microbat boxes? The current recommendation for bats is to include multiple chambers of varying size, to allow different species variety and separate areas mainly from larger species. There are also many guides to box designs for target species: https://www.bct.nsw.gov.au//BCT_Artificial%20Hollow%20Guid

10.01.2022 Baby out of the hollow, in need of a guidance from the parents. This is a good example of letting nature take it’s course. The chick climbed up and the parents guided it and then gave it a feed. A number of colleagues have mentioned that a large number of young birds are being rescued, when they haven’t needed human intervention. #habitat #hollowsashomes #rainbowlorikeet #babybird

09.01.2022 Are you observing animals getting ready for the upcoming breeding season? Thanks Crofty for sharing your observation

08.01.2022 Many of us have observed The Possum House weve installed be (somewhat) surprisingly used by an unexpected animal. In this case, an Aussie fav - the Laughing Kookaburra. 06.01.2022 Grey Shrikethrush inspecting this habitat, possibly a future hollow home for nesting. Thanks John for sharing this observation from Mourquong, NSW.

05.01.2022 Look closely, this is a dead tree (no bark) - continuing to provide breeding habitat for these Musk Lorikeets. Fallen branches/trees also continue to provide #habitat for a range of different species e.g. reptiles. Thanks Lucy C. for sharing your sighting.

05.01.2022 Our simulations showed bushfire, not logging, is the biggest threat to habitat availability for Leadbeaters possum in the Central Highlands. As the cumulative area burnt by fire increased, the quantity and quality of Leadbeaters possum habitat decreased. https://theconversation.com/we-modelled-the-future-of-leadb

04.01.2022 Budgerigar taking up this nesting opportunity in response to good conditions in South Australia. Recent rain has stimulated a flush of plant growth. Thanks Jason VW for sharing this observation.

04.01.2022 Musk Lorikeets taking advantage of this tree hollow habitat - so important to retain big old trees & grow the trees for tomorrow. Thanks Kirk B. for sharing this observation. Have a look at our new project asking you to contribute stories of the plants and animals that catch your attention: http://urbanfieldnaturalist.org

04.01.2022 Big old trees are valuable for many reasons, the cooling benefits of shade is an obvious example. Let’s not focus on the removal of old trees around schools but on the corner that has been turned. Establishing shade trees is a good initiative. https://amp-smh-com-au.cdn.ampproject.org//revealed-the-10

04.01.2022 Yellow Rosella (aka a sub-species of the Crimson Rosella) being observed diligently by John M. in Queensland. The parents were observed feeding chicks in the hollow. What are you observing? #HollowsAsHomes

03.01.2022 Are you seeing birds defending or guarding tree hollows? We see Sulphur-crested Cockatoos often at ‘their’ hollow through the year. You can report this behaviour to one of our other projects, Cockatoo Wingtag - Big City Birds, using the Big City Birds app across Australia: https://www.spotteron.com/bigcitybirds Thanks John M. for sharing from Queensland

03.01.2022 What do you think theyre discussing? Galahs inspecting a nest hollow. Thanks John M. for sharing!

01.01.2022 Hot property! Stefan H. reports 3 pairs of Wood Ducks assessing this nest box. Learning about wildlife use of provided habitat, nest boxes etc., is important for learning what works best when we are aiming to provide habitat for target species.

01.01.2022 Powerful Owl parent bringing a possum home to feed the chick(s) in this beautiful tree hollow.
