24.01.2022 Our beautiful flying lamb Gin (named after our love of Gin and Tonics) . She is so playful and loves to follow everyone around on the farm, hassling us for milk and cuddles while we go about our day. We raised her from when she was just born. Found abandoned by her mother, on the edge of death. We took her in and bottle fed her. She is now one big, happy, healthy lamb. While I was waiting for my Mister Domestic Hooked yardage I made a grumpy cat cushion from co ordinating Art Gallery Fabrics solids with the cutest grumpy cat block pattern by Sew Fresh Quilts It NEEDED to be a quilt so I designed my own quilt around the block with all these gorgeous textural looking Hooked fabrics. To finish I sent my quilt to QuiltsAlot Longarm Quilting & Embroidery Design and boy oh boy did she knock it out of the park! More beautiful than I could have ever imagined. This was inspired by a comment on the Hollyburtonfarm youtube channel saying that Madelaine was a "fake farmer" because she was wearing a dress and "looked too good". It was also prompted by the fact that women on farms are not respected. So often if we have visitors or tradies turn up, they look for the nearest male to talk too. 13.01.2022 Love these sunny winter days! We are rotating our sheep through the oat crop at the moment. Its amazing how much it affects theiir milk production. Their udders are huge! And the lambs are growing overnight! We use the pigs to plow the fields before we plant, so there minimal input. And then when it grows again after the sheep we will put the pigs back in. 07.01.2022 Meet one of our Native Australian Bees, this one the Blue Banded Bee. In my language we call bees "Murnalongs" :) their name gives me a clue to their favourite ...flower, the Murnong. This little Murnalong is very special because its a buzz pollinator, European bees cannot buzz pollinate so we really need these little guys to flourish and we can do that by planting more native plants in our garden. This Blue Banded Murnalong collects pollen by a head banging technique, banging its head on the flower up to 350 times per second. This releases pollen a bit like shaking a salt and pepper shaker. They grasp the flower and vibrate them with their flight muscles making the pollen shoot out for collection. Such an incredible part of our ecology and one that is so needed as most of our native plants need our native insects to pollinate them to survive.
