24.01.2022 As part of Women’s Health Week we have asked our Orthopaedic surgeon Amy Touzall to talk to us about Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a common disease in Australia with 1.2 million people estimated to have osteoporosis and further 6.3 million with low bone density. Over 67% of Osteoporosis sufferers are women. This disease makes bones become brittle leading to a higher risk of breaks than in normal bone. Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals, such as calcium, more quickl...y than the body can replace them, causing a loss of bone thickness (bone density or mass). Amy discussed with us that one of the biggest risk factors for a fragility fracture is a previous fragility fracture. Orthopaedic surgeons have an opportunity to identify high-risk patients and refer back to General Practitioners for consideration of investigation for osteoporosis to prevent further injuries in the future. Amy believes it’s vital for surgeons and General Practitioners to work together to manage patients’ bone health. and that having a clear, open chain of communication between orthopaedic surgeons, General Practitioners and allied health ensures the best possible treatment and ongoing quality of life for her patients. 03.01.2022 What does an OT do? Occupational therapists work with patients who have physical, social, or mental health needs. OTs can assist with rehabilitation, pain management, home modification recommendations, and equipment prescriptions amongst other things. Occupational therapists work with patients to identify interests and goals, manage daily routines at home and in the community, modify daily tasks to make them easier to perform, and recommend activities to participate in. OTs are valuable members of our Allied Health team.

02.01.2022 Elective surgery restrictions will begin lifting across metropolitan Melbourne from 28th September. This is wonderful news for the thousands of Victorian who’ve had much-needed surgery put on hold. At Healthscope, we are working closely with our surgeons to start reducing this backlog of urgent surgeries. Our hospitals have a range of safety and screening protocols in place to protect our patients and staff, along with strict social distancing. We are prepared and ready to care.
