01.01.2022 FIREARMS FRIDAY EDITION 1 - Existing Firearms Licences and those who own Registered Firearms Hello and Welcome to the first instalment of Firearms Friday. This ...initiative is designed to assist both current firearms licence holder and owners and proposed firearms licence holders. Over the coming Fridays I will be discussing numerous firearms related topics which will provide awareness, education and dispel some mis information. On this first instalment I am targeting those people with existing firearms licences and those who own registered firearms. For those people I want you to do one very simple, yet very important thing. I want you to remove your firearms licence from your wallet and check two crucial pieces of information attached to that licence. Firstly, the expiry date. This will be located at the bottom of the licence underneath your signature. What you need to be aware of is once your firearms licence passes its expiration date you are UNLICENSED. This has implications if you own firearms as you are now in breach of the Firearms Act. (Sec 6 Possess Registered Cat A or B Firearms Whilst Unlicensed.) If you are looking at a firearms licence that has expired, you will need to contact me immediately on the email address listed below so I can advise you on the process the fix this issue. The second thing I want you to do is check the address on your licence. If your current address differs from that on your licence and you have not updated the address you will also need to contact me. Be advised that all new licences issued do not have your address printed on them. This is a new safety initiative. If you are in any doubt if your address is current, err on the side of caution and contact me. Overwhelmingly, the reason most firearms licence holders allow their licence to expire is due to them failing to update their current address. This must be done within 14 days of a change of address. A common misconception is that by updating your drivers licence address, you update your firearms licence address. This is not the case. VicRoads have no part in the firearms licence process, apart from being a ‘photo point’ for the licence. LSC John DUNSTAN [email protected]
