23.01.2022 A Frontier War Memorial is planned for Tasmania. It will be fascinating to see what form the community will decide it takes.

22.01.2022 One of my favourite memories is watching local war veterans unveil the Homefront sculptures on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day in Greensborough last year. The sculptures form a unique type of war memorial, one that reflects actual experiences and stories of war veterans. If you love a good story, (one that might require tissues,) spend an hour watching Homefront: A New Kind of War Memorial, screening on SBS On Demand until December 11.

16.01.2022 Airing tomorrow: Wednesday 11 November at 3pm: Homefront-A New Kind of War Memorial on SBS If you missed it last year, this is the story of the new war memorial sculptures in Greensborough War Memorial Park; it's a great story and the footage of our local war veterans speaking of their war experiences is something remarkable to witness.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to filmmaker Mike Wilkins; his beautiful documentary on the making of the Greensborough War Memorial sculptures has been nominated for Best Documentary in the Melbourne Stories category of the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival. 11.01.2022 In the wake of Australia's devastating bushfires, Team Rubicon Australia are uniting the skills and experiences of Australian Defence Force veterans with first responders to assist in disaster recovery. This is a startup organisation working across the country. Veterans are encouraged to volunteer. This footage is from a home destroyed in the December fires in South Australia. The team spent days sifting through the remains to recover medals, other service memorabilia and personal items for a young veteran and his family.

10.01.2022 WWII Pilot & Sailor Carving by Hikaru Kodama, the propellors are forged (not cast!) stainless steel by Roland Dannenhauer, tricky steel knotwork By Roland with help from Shane Kenny. The sailor gazes towards Station Pier, Melbourne where, during World War II, Australian sailors boarded ships bound for battle.

10.01.2022 During World War I there were people on the front recording audio. Special units used a technique called sound ranging to try and determine where enemy gunfire was coming from. To do so, technicians set up strings of microphonesactually barrels of oil dug into the grounda certain distance apart, then used a piece of photographic film to visually record noise intensity. The effect is similar to the way a seismometer records an earthquake. Using that data and the time betwe...en when a shot was fired and when it hit, they could then triangulate where enemy artillery was locatedand adjust their own guns accordingly. At least one bit of that sound ranging film survived the Warthe film recording the last few minutes of World War I when the guns finally fell silent at the River Moselle on the American Front. Londons Imperial War Museum uses those graphic sound waves to recreate the moment the Armistice went into effect and the guns fell silent. As part of a celebration to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the war, the museum commissioned the sound production company Coda to Coda to use the film strip of the guns firing away at 10:58 A.M. on November 11, 1918, then going silent when the clock strikes 11, the symbolic moment politicians determined the war would end, to try and recreate what that instant may have sounded like. According to the company, the film strip has six lines, one for each microphone in use. The team researched the types of weapons being used by each side at the end of the war, then used the film to determine the size, frequency and distance of blasts. Looking at landscape images of the front, they also figured out how intense the reverberations from the blasts would be. Using that info, they recreated the sound of the last minutes of battle,

07.01.2022 We had to burn some sculptures. And then we made some new sculptures. Our friend Mike filmed us and was immediately obsessed with what we were doing. What was meant to be a 4 minute film of a fire became a full documentary about the creation of a unique war memorial in Greensborough. And then SBS picked it up. It is with great excitement that we announce the screening of Homefront: A New Kind of War Memorial on SBS on this Monday 11 November at 2.30pm.... Our thanks goes to the awesome Mike Wilkins for telling this remarkable story through film, reminding us how precious the the experiences of our veterans are and how artists can bring these experiences to life. Huge thanks to Colin James who saw the potential of this project years before the first chainsaw was started, and bought us all together to make this happen. Thanks also to: Leigh Conkie who, as well as carving, doesn't realise what a genius coordinator he is, engaging world class carvers and sourcing the huge chunks of wood we needed. Hikaru Kodama, who travelled from Japan to lend us his incredible chainsaw skills, few in the world can carve such expressive faces. John Brady, one of Australia's most experienced carvers for his support work on our largest piece. Roland Dannenhauer, a gifted blacksmith whose steelwork on these pieces is simply astonishing. Our metalwork and installation team: Justin Purser, Shane and Thomas Kenny and blacksmith Steve Nicoll. Mike's film crew who working on sound and grading. Our support team who worked on footings, transport and surface treatment. Homefront is a partnership between Banyule City Council - a big thank you to Hannes and the team, Austin Health - thanks to Robert Winther and the veterans who shared their experiences with us and to Neil Grant for running the writing workshops, and the Greensborough RSL - thanks to Lee and Simon for their support. Homefront: A New Kind of War Memorial is dedicated to the memory of: Wayne Conkie 13 August 1957 - 26 July 2018 and Ron Cornelious 25 April 1924 - 20 July 2018

Originally known as Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. With the greatest of respect to Vietnam Veterans and all the battles they have fought #LestWeForget
