25.01.2022 Everyone needs a safe place, especially our children.

25.01.2022 Dont hold them too much or let them nap on you. They will get used to it and then youll not be able to put them down. Dont feed on demand, they should b...e on a schedule otherwise youre being soft and they will start to take the mickey and tell you they need a feed when really they dont. Dont have them in your room too long. Its not good for them & youll never get them out. Dont respond too much, or youll make a rod for your own back and they will never learn to soothe themselves. Dont offer comfort at night or they will never learn to sleep through and then they wont develop properly. How many of these have you been told? Well meant, but so out of touch, and so unhelpful. Behind every single one is the underlying assumption that none of it is needed. That the baby will be fine without or should be taught to be fine without. The assumption that the way a babys brain develops and matures enough to be able to comfort itself is by the parent gradually removing or limiting the comfort offered. The implication that providing too much comfort is actually bad for your baby, and that it will hinder their progress. The thing is, there are fundamental problems with that viewpoint. They fail to understand that the way to independence is first by being dependant. That the way to learning how to comfort yourself is first by being comforted. That the way to feel confident is first by learning that its both allowed and ok to have needs. That the way to develop emotional agility is first by having your needs met and emotions recognised. A stressed brain doesnt develop as well as a comforted one. High, long lasting levels of stress (cortisol) are not good for brain development. Theyre not good for anyone, actually. Chronic stress has a shrinking effect on the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for higher level processes such as thinking and learning. While stress can shrink the prefrontal cortex, it can also increase the size of the amygdala, which acts as the brains fire alarm, going off anytime it detects or perceives a threat. This can make the brain more receptive to stress and mean the fire alarm becomes hypersensitive, going off more often, and at things that arent actually stressful. Babies frequently find the world overwhelming and stressful. They arent mature enough to physically and emotionally de-stress themselves in the ways you can. Being with you, near you, or on you is their main way of winding down and finding calm again. Being held, being fed, being rocked, being in the sling, being close to you at night. Your baby will tell you what they need on any given day. These arent manipulative or unnecessary wants, they are completely legitimate needs. Needs that it is never ever bad to meet where you can. We live in an age where people are becoming increasingly aware of mental wellbeing and the importance of it. The idea of self care is huge. As adults we actively seek out ways to look after ourselves mentally and physically. Our mental health declines when we dont. The same viewpoint needs to be extended to babies. Babies have mental wellbeing. Babies need self care. Brains just dont develop as well with high levels of stress. We know far more about infant brain development now than weve ever done. Its time to harness that knowledge and educate all corners of society so it becomes the new normal. ***You will never do this perfectly, and there will be days where it feels like its all gone wrong, but tomorrow is a new day. A babys overall development isnt affected by little blips here and there. Not getting it right every time is a normal part of a parents daily life. Within that imperfection however, can still be the ability to view your baby and their needs in the way described***

21.01.2022 Happy Montessori Education Week! Photo: circa 1930, Havilah Childrens Home where Norma Selfie, one of four Australians to be trained by Montessori in the 1913 ...Rome lectures, was the directress. These teachers have studied the method to the letter, but they do not have the necessary trust and therefore have not respected the liberty of the child...But they sought to interfere and guide... If, instead, a teacher respects the freedom of the child and has faith in him, if she has will enough to forget all she has learned, if she is modest enough not to consider her intervention essential, if she knows how to wait patiently, then she will see a complete change in the child (Montessori, 1956, p.83) Montessori, M. 11.01.2022 #KmartPlayTray This morning I was inspired by @a.playful.day to create this small world beach

10.01.2022 With all the rain our backyard became a creek to explore and splash in!

09.01.2022 For a while now Isla (3) has been showing an interest in the days of the week. Almost every day shell ask what day it is, sing the days of the week song or ask what we are doing that day. Although she has memorised the names and order of the days, this doesnt mean she totally understands what those names mean. So I wanted to extend on this and find an activity that would give her a better idea of how the week goes, how long it takes, the pattern repeating and a heads up on... whats to come for us throughout the upcoming week. But when I looked at buying a childrens calendar they all had so much going on - multiple colours, numbers, weather, months, feelings, time etc. With all the different colours and subjects it was overstimulating, confusing and not to mention expensive. So when I found this magnetic planner at #Kmart ($10) it was perfect. Simply to the point to learn one thing at a time. I printed and laminated photos of the regular activities of our week eg. Kindy, music class and photos of her Daddy to represent the weekend. Well use one magnet to mark what day it is each day. Then well use the whiteboard markers to write or draw any one off plans we might have for the week eg. Play dates. I spoke with Isla and had her help with placing the pictures on the correct day to involve her and give her a better understanding of what it all means. #HomeGrown #Montessori #MontessoriAtHome #MontessoriToddler #MontessoriAustralia #MontessoriBaby #MontessoriKids #ChildrensEducation #ChildrenStore #childrensactivities #NaturePlay #Childmindersofinstagram #AussieInstaKids #invitationtoplay #simplifiedChildhood

07.01.2022 Do you let you kids play in the rain on warm summer days?

07.01.2022 Luca, aged 1, pouring his own glass of water this morning. To help Luca succeed in this activity I measure out just half a glass worth of water into the jug. This means he can pour without overflowing the glass. #HomeGrown #Montessori #MontessoriAtHome #MontessoriToddler #MontessoriAustralia #MontessoriBaby #MontessoriKids #ChildrensEducation #childrensactivities #NaturePlay #Childmindersofinstagram #AussieInstaKids #invitationtoplay #simplifiedChildhood

07.01.2022 On Tuesday the kids and I went down to the creek to explore and we found hundreds of tadpoles! We spoke about why some had legs and some didnt etc. So I made this simple activity by printing and laminating the lifecycle. I printed the smaller lifecycle as a guide for now and Isla placed the movable pieces into their correct order. Isla went on to tell me all about the life cycle of a frog which lead onto making the life cycle of a butterfly! #ChildLedLearning #HomeGrown #Montessori #MontessoriAtHome #MontessoriToddler #MontessoriAustralia #MontessoriBaby #MontessoriKids #ChildrensEducation #ChildrenStore #OnlineStore #Quotes #childrensactivities #NaturePlay #Childmindersofinstagram #AussieInstaKids #invitationtoplay #simplifiedChildhood

06.01.2022 YES! Thanks to Erica Layne from The Purposeful Parenting Movement

05.01.2022 If we want our kids to come to us with safety concerns, we need to know how to listen without minimizing or trying to fix their feelings. We often do this unint...entionally because we are uncomfortable with distress and want to be helpful. But it can be invalidating. We love this quote from Janet Lansbury who suggests that we offer kids (and other adults too!) an open, accepting space. #emotionalsafety #safestrongkids #kidpowerco #listen #safetyfirst #fullcirclesafety #createspace

05.01.2022 The children have been practising their pouring over the last few weeks, so now they are able to access a jug with a small amount of water and a glass whenever they would like a drink. I will keep an eye on this throughout the day by continuously replacing the glass once its been use and having a 1/2 glass amount of water in the jug. There is a towel in the cupboard so the children can clean up any spills along the way! (Having the glass in the sink means its a little lower and therefore easier to pour in to. The sink also catches any spills making it more manageable at this stage.)

03.01.2022 Luca, aged 2, working with classical music and a Montessori transferring activity to practice peaceful patience and persistence along with perfecting his fine motor skills. #HomeGrown #Montessori #MontessoriAtHome #MontessoriToddler #MontessoriAustralia #MontessoriBaby #MontessoriKids #ChildrensEducation #childrensactivities #NaturePlay #Childmindersofinstagram #AussieInstaKids #invitationtoplay #simplifiedChildhood

02.01.2022 Weve been loving all the rain this week!

02.01.2022 We reopened our Family Day Care and last week was our first week back!!! We had really lovely days and the children are settling in beautifully!! Here is an activity I like to have out whenever I have new children starting. Its a visual timeline of our daily routine. I think one of the hardest parts about being a child sometimes is simply not knowing or understanding whats coming up next. We all like to have some kind of idea of how our day is going to pan out and what to ...except. This is a helpful way to familiarize the children with the daily routine! I have printed photos that represent each stage of our routine, laminated them and used Velcro to attached the photos in order along a long fabric wall hanging. The children start by unrolling the fabric, laying out the photos, then using the Velcro to stick the photos in order from arriving at the house to waving goodbye to their friends at the end of the day. They then can either hang the routine up to display it or pack it away by removing the photos and rolling up the fabric. #HomeGrown #Montessori #MontessoriAtHome #MontessoriToddler #MontessoriAustralia #MontessoriBaby #MontessoriKids #ChildrensEducation #ChildrenStore #childrensactivities #NaturePlay #Childmindersofinstagram #AussieInstaKids #invitationtoplay #simplifiedChildhood #DailyRoutines #FamilyDayCare #FamilyDayCareAustralia

You [Maria Montessori] have very truly remarked that if w...e are to reach real peace in this world and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with children (Gandhi, 1931, p.100) Gandhi, M.
