20.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS | There have been three new cases of coronavirus in Queensland in the past 24 hours with two of these cases being from the Gold Coast. This mea...ns new restrictions will be in place. From 8.00 am tomorrow (Saturday), only 10 people will be allowed inside and outside for gatherings on the Gold Coast. If you are showing any symptoms of respiratory illness, it is most important that you get tested, even if you have the kind of symptoms that you may have once disregarded as minor. Respiratory symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, a sore throat and/or tiredness. The Hope Island Respiratory Clinic offers a FREE service, funded by the Commonwealth Government and provides a safe environment for the assessment, testing, diagnosis and management of people with acute respiratory infections including COVID-19. Please do not "soldier on". As much as you might like to continue to go to work or go about your business, the best way to help your friends, family and colleagues is to get tested and stay at home until you are well again. 19.01.2022 This week is Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Action Week, a week that is more important than ever during this most unusual and difficult year. The theme for PANDA Week 2020 is ‘Tell someone who cares’. With many expecting and new parents struggling due to COVID-19, the team at Homeworld Helensvale Medical Centre recognises how critical it is that we all work together to support families facing mental health challenges at this time. This year, more than ever, it’s vital that ...expecting and new parents who are struggling know that they are not alone and that they can reach out to us for help. And just as importantly, they know that when they do reach out, that they will be supported by our GPs and other health professionals. Many of our GPs have a special interest in mums and bubs, with several of them new mums themselves. They understand not just the joy but also the challenges that a new baby can bring. If you are the one in five expecting or new mums experiencing perinatal anxiety and depression please phone the Homeworld Helensvale Medical Centre on 5580 6677 or book online at www.hwhmc.com.au. We are here to support you through any anxiety and depression you may be experiencing. #PANDAWeek2020 #TellSomeoneWhoCares @PANDANational
17.01.2022 Today is the Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day a campaign which aims to raise awareness about breast and gynaecological cancers, as well as raise funds for prevention programmes, support services and vital cancer research. With around 4,600 Queensland women diagnosed with a breast or gynaecological cancer each year, why not make Pink Ribbon Day your day to prioritise your breast health? The Covid-19 pandemic has made people apprehensive about visiting their GP and as a conse...quence, routine health checks, including breast screening, have declined. Many women do not want to burden the healthcare system if they believe they have no symptoms. Others may not be aware the breast cancer screening clinics have reopened, or may be just preoccupied with other things and have simply taken their cancer screening off of their To-Do list. Our practice wants to encourage women of all ages to self-check and become breast aware. If you notice any changes, make an appointment with one of our GPs to discuss further testing. Routine health checks such as this are encouraged as part of a national campaign called #DontWaitMate. The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of continuing regular healthcare and to ensure that Australians feel safe and confident to access care during the pandemic. So, when it comes to your breast health, #dontwaitmate. 16.01.2022 Celebrating Queensland Seniors - 15-23 August Next week is Seniors Week and the events go virtual in 2020! From 15-23 August we will be celebrating Queensland Seniors in a way like never before. Sadly, the usual face-to-face interactive Seniors Week programme will not take place in many areas, but there are a great range of virtual activities for you to enjoy. Whilst it is not the usual way of celebrating this particular week, there are some fabulous opportunities to acces...s a range of events and activities that are being held throughout Queensland. This year more than ever people need something to celebrate, in the safest way possible. A great event to join in with is QPAC’s Drawn Together which invites people from all over Queensland to share morning tea with friends and family, young and old to celebrate the powerful relationships that exist across generations. From the comfort of your own home, you are able to join the QPAC morning tea as a range of guests discuss the big, complicated and fun issues of our times. This free online event marks the commencement of Queensland Seniors Week 2020 and will be hosted by QPAC Scholar in Residence Professor Judith McLean. It includes performances from some of Queensland’s most outstanding artists western classical and traditional Asian fusion ensemble JADE New World Collective, Babushka Cabaret, the Brat Pack Tappers, Cairns indie-folk artist Greta Stanley and Townsville musical theatre performer Sarah Murr. So, grab a cuppa on Saturday morning at 10.30 am and join QPAC’s morning tea guests Dame Quentin Bryce, Aunty Colleen Wall, Creative Director of Briefs Factory Fez Fa’anana and internationally renowned didgeridoo performer and pianist David Williams as they discuss ideas of happiness, heritage, the value of the arts in a community and for individuals, and those things that can make all of us a little bit wicked. Special messages will be delivered by QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas and COTA Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans during the event. The link to the event (which runs for 40 minutes) and further information is available here. https://www.qpac.com.au/event/drawn_together_20/
16.01.2022 Tragically, around 4600 Queensland women are diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer each year. Though breast cancer survival rates have continue to improve in Australia, with 89 out of every 100 women diagnosed now surviving five or more years beyond diagnosis, it is still a prevalent issue that needs prioritised attention. These heart-breaking statistics are the powerful reason behind why Queenslanders will come together and show support on 28 October, to participat...e in Pink Ribbon Day. This Cancer Council Queensland event raises awareness and funds for support services to improve the quality of life for those affected by women’s cancers, along with research into potential new treatments and prevention measures. Practice Principal of Homeworld Helensvale Medical Centre, Dr Andrew Weissenberger urges the Gold Coast community to throw their support behind Pink Ribbon Day, which is the perfect opportunity to get together, host a pink-themed fundraiser and talk about women’s health. Whether it's hosting a pink event, wearing pink or getting active in pink, everyone can unite in pink across a variety of events and help Cancer Council beat women’s cancers. To get involved with Pink Ribbon, or find out more information, please visit, https://www.doitforcancer.com.au/way/host-a-pink-fundraiser. 13.01.2022 Today is World Diabetes Day and the theme this year is Nurses make the Difference for Diabetes. This theme highlights the vital role that nurses play in the prevention and management and support of people living with diabetes, as well as those at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. So, this World Diabetes Day, we’d like to take a minute to say thank you to our wonderful nurses and the nurses in our community, and the important role they play in supporting our patients living with diabetes.
12.01.2022 Australians have now downloaded the COVIDsafe app more than seven million times. With the recent outbreak in Brisbane and surrounds it is important now, more ...than ever to be traceable and contactable. If you haven’t already downloaded the app, then please download it today. In Australia, the COVIDsafe app has been used hundreds of times to help identify unknown close contacts and positive cases. The COVIDsafe app is a critical part of our government’s response to managing contact tracing during this global pandemic. It’s so important that contact tracing teams receive all the support they can get so any outbreaks can be quickly contained. If you have already downloaded the app, visit the App Store to make sure you’re running the latest version. Remember, stay at home if you are sick, make sure you wash your hands, keep physical distance, be aware of the changing of rules and following the local advice on wearing masks where applicable. Most importantly, please get tested, even if you have the kind of symptoms that you may have once disregarded as minor. If you are unwell with respiratory symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, a sore throat and/or tiredness. 12.01.2022 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a strong reminder to all Australian women that they should put their health and well-being first. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. Almost 20,000 Australians will be diagnosed with the disease this year alone, with 3,000 losing their lives to the disease. However, huge strides have been made in diagnosing breast cancer early and in treatment, and now, more than nine out of 10 women diagnosed with br...east cancer in Australia survive. Early detection remains the best chance of survival and prevention is always better than cure. There are known risk factors for breast cancer, and while some such as family history are not modifiable, some are. Every woman should learn about these to understand her own risk. Information is available on Cancer Australia’s website: https://breastcancerriskfactors.gov.au This October, our practice wants to encourage women of all ages to self-check and become breast aware and if you notice any changes, make an appointment with one of our GPs to discuss further testing. Women aged 50 to 74 years can take up BreastScreen Australia’s invitation of free screening every two years. Many women are still not participating in this free screening programme, even though this has the greatest potential to prevent deaths from breast cancer. Routine health checks such as this are encouraged as part of a new national campaign called #DontWaitMate. The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of continuing regular healthcare and to ensure that Australians feel safe and confident to access care during the pandemic. So, when it comes to your breast health, #dontwaitmate. Phone the Homeworld Helensvale Medical Centre on 5580 6677 or book online at www.hwhmc.com.au. Good health is your most important asset.
08.01.2022 Are you looking after your health in the same way that you did prior to COVID-19? Or has this pandemic made you avoid your regular health checks and tests? Did you know that 52% of Australians are avoiding their usual healthcare during COVID-19? This could lead to an increased impact of disease, reduced productivity, and poorer quality of life. #DontWaitMate, a new campaign by the Continuity of Care Collaboration (CCC), a unique group of over 35 peak industry bodies and healt...hcare organisations, is encouraging people to look after their health, whether this is managing a chronic health condition, getting preventative screening or pathology tests or seeking immediate treatment and care if experiencing urgent and / or new symptoms. The objective of the #DontWaitMate campaign is to help people, patients and carers in Australia feel safe to continue to go and see their doctor, nurse, pharmacist, allied health professional and dentist, and to also not put off tests such as blood tests, cancer screening or x-rays and scans. So, how is YOUR general health? The Homeworld Helensworld Medical Centre is open and available for our current patients to revisit us for your general healthcare checks. This campaign is so important - don’t let your health be an unintended victim of the pandemic. We also have availability and capacity to treat new patients, so please don’t hesitate to give us a call or make an appointment online. Your health is our priority and we prioritise patient safety. We have the strictest of measures, including personal protective equipment when required, regular cleaning and social distancing in place to ensure that YOU feel safe when you arrive. If you are still hesitant to come in person, we can assist you remotely with our services such as Telehealth when appropriate to do so.. 08.01.2022 Did you have to postpone your regular prostate check up due to COVID-19? Or never had a check up? It’s no surprise that many men decided to put routine health checks on hold during this time. Symptoms and tests that lie outside the domain of COVID-19 have been largely ignored. In Australia, 200,000 men are living with Prostate Cancer, 20,000 more will be diagnosed this year and 3,500 will die of the disease. Prostate Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Austra...lian men and kills more men than breast cancer kills women. As September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, there is no better time to talk to one of our GPs about being tested. Our practice wants to encourage all men over 50 years of age (or 40 years if they have a family history of prostate cancer), to make an appointment to discuss testing for prostate cancer, as part of their regular health check-up. As part of this check-up, a simple blood test, known as the PSA test measures the level of prostate specific antigen (made only by the prostate gland) in your blood. This test could save YOUR life. Routine health checks such as this are encouraged as part of a new national campaign called #DontWaitMate. The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of continuing regular healthcare and to ensure that Australians feel safe and confident to access care during the pandemic. So, when it comes to your prostate health, #dontwaitmate. Phone the Homeworld Helensvale Medical Centre on 5580 6677 or book online at www.hwhmc.com.au. 04.01.2022 We know that 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, particularly during the COVID-19 crisis. Long periods of self-isolation and feelings of being "alone" have made it important now more than ever to stay connected and, for those who are able, to be willing to support those around them. That's why it's important to recognise that today is RUOK? Day, our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask "Are you OK?" The message this ye...ar is "There's more to say after RUOK?" You don't have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they're not OK. By knowing what to say, you can help someone feel supported and assist them to access appropriate help long before they are in a crisis, which can really make a positive difference to their life. A simple conversation, encouraging action and continuing to check in can help change lives. At Homeworld Helensvale Medical Centre, our strong and compassionate team of medical and allied health professionals are here to offer support, medical and psychological care and counselling if you, or someone in your world is struggling with life’s ups and downs. If you, or someone you know is not feeling OK, call us on 5580 6677 or book an appointment online at www.hwhmc.com.au

02.01.2022 This week we have celebrated National Carers Week and all of us at Hope Island Medical Centre (HWHMC) would like to give a big shout out to all of the Carers in our community. National Carers Week is about recognising and celebrating the outstanding contribution Australia’s 2.7 million carers make to our nation. Carers across Australia provide care and support to family members, friends with disabilities, mental health conditions, chronic conditions, terminal illnesses, alcoh...ol or other drug related issues or those who are aged and frail. It is also an opportunity to raise community awareness among all Australians about the diversity of carers and their caring roles. Carers make an enormous contribution to our communities as well as our national economy. Should all carers decide to stop performing their caring role, it would cost the country $77.9 billion per year to replace those supports that’s almost $1.5 billion per week. Carers are also essential for us to be able to provide care for our more vulnerable patients, from transport to help with arranging appointments, medications and daily care needs. So thank you to Carers everywhere for what you do! We know our patients really appreciate your invaluable role, and so do we. National Carers Week
01.01.2022 For the first time in its 60-year history, Queensland’s annual celebration of seniors is going virtual and this year, more than ever people need something to celebrate, in the safest way possible. As Covid-19 regulations has seen many older people in self-isolation, never has it been more important to ensure people remain connected and don’t become segregated. Often, older people with low internet skills can feel isolated from their community, friends, and family. Some people... need extra support to get online and build their digital skills, and may need a compelling reason to take the plunge. What better way than to join in one of the many online activities this Seniors Week, 15-23 August 2020. This handy guide was created in partnership with the Queensland Government Volunteering Queensland Telstra and COTA Queensland to assist people to access the online events and activities from their mobile or tablet device. Perhaps you know a senior who might benefit from this guide during these difficult times. https://qldseniorsweek.org.au//Helping-you-access-virtual-
