25.01.2022 honestearthgardens's profile picture honestearthgardens Cover crops Great ways to prep patches for hungry plants like tomatoes... Chop them up, dig them in and leave for a few weeks to break down before planting next crop. Usually after a months growth is when they can be turned into the soil. But leaving until they reach maturity is fine...you get peas and broad beans to eat YUM #organicgardening #organicgarden #adelaidegardendesign #permaculturegarden https://www.instagram.com/p/CFIVtfqjvwW/

18.01.2022 The old shed bed These have lasted a while (+5yrs) and cost nothing. Act as a divider of the ol' chook yard and... The amaaaahzing bit... We now use them as compost cubbies. Raised beds can get a fairly hard demand placed upon them. A great way to keep the crop rotation each season etc is to use one as a compost bay.... This had all the off cuts of cabbage, onions etc from @kimchiclub plus our kitchen scraps a few months ago. Buried them all then mulch on top. Let it do is thing. You can turn it over after a month or so. Then within a few months you have a fresh garden bed to plant into. Free organic soil/compost. No compost miles or plastic bags. If you don't want to 'waste the space' while the food scraps are breaking down, you can still pop some peas, beans etc in. Then once they are done, chop it into the soil. Happily plant your next season veg Raised beds can get quite compacted and need constant floofing with compost and a bit of airation. This is an easy way to tick all the boxes. In this approx 50cm X 100cm bed 4 snow peas 2 chard 3 cabbage Then lettuce and mustard greens to cover the rest of the soil like a living mulch. The lettuce will remind me to check the rest of the veg This during summer and then growing in the cooler wetter months works really well. https://www.instagram.com/p/B_dxwo4DFd5/

13.01.2022 This week's update of 'while we're at home busy washing our hands' I won't go too far into monoculture farming and how I think it's a bit lazy and greedy... Because once you grow so much that you can no longer manage with people and organic methods, I really don't think it's proper farming. It's relying on chemicals and machines to do your dirty work for you ... Anyway Let your councils know you're not happy And... We can still choose to NOT BUY GM foods. It'll just mean it's exported probably.. but greedy 'farmers' don't really care It's more the amount of chemicals that can be used in GM crops than the modifying of the crops if ya get me Spray drift is shit. Shit for the food, the soil, the bees, the people spraying it and living next to it with rain water tanks as their only water supply, shit for our waterways, animals and life in general #nothappyjan https://www.instagram.com/p/B_i0agGjta3/

11.01.2022 TREE PRUNING TIPS Deciduous in winter Evergreen in autumn and spring... Fruit trees? Same deal, except the deciduous also benefit from a summer prune after fruiting Winter prune stimulates vigorous growth, great for encouraging new trees and also filling in gaps with the new growth, overhaul of desired shape etc. Summer prune will keep vigor in check but also result in more fruit budding, great for established trees and for fixing up shape where there has been too much growth and you want to calm it down a little. Big cuts in winter, pop some honey on it Avoid summer pruning during heat waves Where to start? Remove: diseased, dead and rubbing/touching Then the rest is dependent upon desired shape or requirements for fruiting or flowering etc Pruning sessions open with options: do it all for you or you can get your snip on learning and doing with me in your own garden Bookings via 0406 426 422 or [email protected] https://www.instagram.com/p/CC7YYgNDnPt/

03.01.2022 My favourite spot in the garden... Edible gardens can be all in a row, dispersed throughout ornamentals, raised beds, neat, relaxed etc. The most versatile of garden 'types' I remember walking into this house for an inspection with a friend and headed for the back yard. Opened the doors and were It was just weeds. A glorious open huge back yard of weeds. (Tomorrow's job... More weeding)... The house. Bit weird. Bit run down. Bit small. But the yard was the clincher. It's given me a lot of exercise. A lot of reflection time. A lot of podcast time. A tonne of veggies. Many lessons from experiments and why I chose to study Hort/garden design. And I'm still learning from the lessons it teaches me every day If you want a yard that is nice to look at that gives you food, I'm only a phone call away. Options: I give you advice and you get the exercise and fun Or I can do it all for you (party pooper stealing all the https://www.instagram.com/p/B_YV86CDRVO/
