24.01.2022 Devotion 36 4/6/20 Deuteronomy 13:1-16:17 Hi all, we shall come to the last passage of Deuteronomy for the week. Thanks for enduring it with me. I hope it can at least encourage you to read Gods Word, and also Gods Word in Deuteronomy.... Again, this is another long passage of about four chapters. The theme here still continues with the right and proper worship for God, for the Israelites at that time... in the Old Testament. It can be broken down into the following points. 1. 13:1-18, resisting pressure, 2. 14:1-21, being different, 3. 14:22-29, tithes, 4. 15:1-18, dealing with poverty and need, and 5. 15:19-16:17, festivals. Here, God once again lays down some rules and regulations for the Israelites to worship Him properly. And these include that they are not to listen to any other prophets and dreamers for advice to worship other things and gods, besides Yahweh, they are to remain holy by only eating the food allowed by God, to set themselves apart from the rest of the world, they are to practice tithing to honour God and love Him wholeheartedly, they are to learn to be extremely generous with the law of canceling debts, they are to treat servants as human being, as one of their own, and lastly, they are to celebrate rightly for the celebrations that are ordained by God. Obviously, with all these, God wants them to be truthful to Him, to be holy for Him, to honour and love Him, to be people of generosity, to be people who love other people, and to be people who are joyous, and who remember all the good things that God has done for them. For us as Christians today, who are under the New Covenant, not under the Old Covenant, we may not follow exactly as to all the laws given here, but the theological values, and some of the moral values are still relevant to us... God still wants us to only worship Him. God still wants us to be holy for His name. God still wants us to give and to tithe for His kingdom works. God still wants us to be people who are generous in giving... God still wants us to be people who love others, and love those who are less fortunate than us. And God still wants us to be the people who celebrate for Him in His Church today...

22.01.2022 Devotion 25 12/5/20 Colossians 4:2-6 Dear brothers and sisters, and friends, good morning! Hope you all are doing well this week, and have had some good time on the weekend. May the grace of the Lord be with you.... This week is week 9 of our church being online. Thank God for our government, looks like we are slowly opening up in the next few weeks and months... We have now come to the second last passage of Colossians today. Paul now comes back to the message he started earlier, on the simple message of the importance of prayer first! Here, he asks everyone: 1. To devote themselves to prayer, be alert and be thankful always, 2. Pray for one another, and pray for opportunities, especially for those who proclaim the gospel of Christ, 3. Pray that those who proclaim the gospel of Christ can proclaim it clearly, 4. Everyone is to be wise, and make every opportunity for the gospel work with outsiders, and 5. Make sure the way we talk to others is always graceful and wise, so that we can be a testimony ourselves to others. In just a few lines of the text here, Paul here gives a full instruction of guidance for the conduct of Christian life in light of the gospel. After all, we see that this is the heartbeat of Colossians, its for the gospel of Christ, and the proclamation of the gospel, with ones prayer life and conduct of Christian life. So, thats the mission and the purpose of our church too, otherwise, churches will become fellowship of friends, or even ritual gatherings. Evangelism and outreach, and reaching out to people, is also not just about methods, strategies, and resources that we have, but its about how we live our Christian life, as a believer, follower and disciple of Christ. Paul focuses on the Christians life, their prayer life, and their everyday conduct of life for the gospel. We can only do the work of the heartbeat of the gospel and of the heartbeat of the church, when we stay close to the heartbeat of Jesus Christ... Let us now take some time to think about hows our daily prayer life right now... is it centred on the gospel and for the gospel...? And hows our everyday conduct of our Christian life today? Do you think does other people or people around us think that we are a Christian... even before we tell them we are, or before we try to share the gospel with them? Thank God for His Word. May the Word of God bless us richly, as we meditate and pray with His Word daily...

21.01.2022 Devotion 31 26/5/20 Deuteronomy 4:44-5:15 Dear all, a blessed day and a blessed new week to you. We must always remember God is always good to us. This week is our church online on week 11. Let us also pray and aim that we will all be in one heart to return to physical face to face meeting in the next few weeks or months, while abiding to the government rules and safety measures. ... Thank you for all your weekly supports and prayers for people, and your encouragement for us who serve as leaders. We have now come to a smaller section on the book of Deuteronomy, where Moses introduced the first part of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are the most important summarised laws of the laws that were given at that time. Do you know what they are? And do you still follow them closely in heart today, as you walk with God in the 21st century culture and lifestyle? We can summarise todays passage with the following points. 1. A summary of where Israel was at that time before the new land, vv 44-49 of chapter 4. 2. An explanation of the covenant parties between God and Israel, vv 1-5 of chapter 5. 3. The first part of the Ten Commandments, the vertical relationship with God, vv 6-15. God and Israel had entered into a covenant. And God was the initiator of this covenant, and He wanted to make Israel a special nation of His own. And for this covenant to remain valid and lasting, both parties have to be faithful. And so God established the Ten Commandments here, to allow Israel to build a loyal relationship with Him. The commandments are also statements or words, if you like. The first commandment, they must have only one God. The second commandment, there must be no improper representation of God. The third commandment, there must be a proper representation of God. And lastly here, the fourth commandment, there must be a commemoration of God and His work. Coming to us at our time today as Christians, all these commandments here still apply to us. God still want us to only worship Him, honour Him rightly, and have concern for His name as well. The Sabbath law does not apply to us strictly, but we must have a day and time that we commemorate Him today weekly, as His people. And the church tradition has also helped us today, by setting this on Sunday. Similarly for most Christian nations, by having Sunday as an off day and rest day. God also bless us today through this day. Let us today take courage to encourage one another in church, and continue to encourage our family and children, and household to set time for God, and to set time to come together for God on Sunday. Without practicing the fourth commandment, we cant practice the top three commandments for sure. And at the end, the result is that, we will lose God. Not God wanting to lose us. God set these commandments to protect us and protect our relationship with Him. May the Lord build your faith up and your love for Him, as you love Him and read His Word in Deuteronomy.

17.01.2022 Devotion 33 28/5/20 Deuteronomy 6:1-25 Hi everyone, I was watching the drizzle that God is giving us today in Perth. Its beautiful! Sometimes, and at times, God had already showered us with many blessings in our lives, but we need the spiritual eyes to be able to see...... Today, we have come to the heart of Deuteronomy in chapter 6... We can also summarised the chapter with the contemporary points below: 6:1-3, practice makes perfect, 6:4-9, listen, love and live, 6:10-19, lest we forget, and 6:20-25 Israels creed. In this passage, Israel is to tell and share of their story with their children and their generations to come... And this is especially on how God led them out from slavery in Egypt, with the Exodus event... They are to pass on these stories to their children and their childrens children. So that this important salvation events of God would not be forgotten. They are to keep knowing God, and in this case, God in the Old Testament is Yahweh. And they are to know Him and to love Him with all that they have... And they must also learn to immerse themselves in Gods love, and to teach this love of God to their children. The way they teach about the love of God to their children or vice versa, must be in all spheres of their childrens life. And at the same time, to love God is to be faithful to Him, and to obey Him... Coming to us, today, do we have a story of our own to tell our children... for how God have saved us, with our journey? Our children will only truly believe in God when they see God changed us in our lives... And they can only pass on the faith and the love of God that they have to their children, when they see the impact on us... As parents today, it is paramount for us to show and demonstrate our deep love for God, teaching about it is still not enough... So, let us think about how are we going, on passing on the faith that we have today to our next generation? Can they see our love, and seriousness, and sacrifice for God, in our daily life, in our marriage, and in our church life? What we do for God today, and how we love God today, can save the next generations of human beings, human lives...
16.01.2022 Devotion 29 20/5/20 Deuteronomy 2:1-3:29 Good day everyone, hope you are adjusting well to Perth cold mornings these few days. Thank God for His grace and love for us each day. And that we can also pray as we partake in His work and salvation plan for the world.... We have come to chapter 2-3 of Deuteronomy today. And these two chapters will reveal to us why Moses and Israel stay for so long in the plains of Moabs, instead of entering the new land that God is giving them in Canaan. You may find there are a lot of details in these two chapters, that you might want to reread them again and again. In short, we can find three main sections here in these two chapters: 1. A reminder of Israel wandering years (vv 1-23) 2. Israel conquered the lands of Sihon and Og (2:24-3:20) 3. Moses looked ahead to the conquest of the land of Canaan that is to come (vv 21-29) You will also need a map or two to study these details here in these two chapters well. So, as we read these two chapters and with the details here, it really reminds us of Gods goodness, and His faithfulness and promises. God had helped Israel defeat their enemies around them at that time, and brought them into the plains of Moab. And they have now settled here to prepare to enter the new land in Canaan. This is a second chance. As they could have entered it earlier like 40 years ago, even without settling at these plains of Moab, but directly from Kadesh Barnea. However, they dont have faith in God at that time, and was unwilling to obey. The goal here now is really a reminder of this new land that God is going to give them. And nothing is really too big and difficult for God, if it is Gods will and plan... To summarise a long story and to relate this to us today, our goal today is also to enter a new kind of land and place, that God is preparing for us. However, this new land and place is not a specific geographic location anymore, as in the Old Testament, but a new heavenly realm and reality that God is bringing to us. God today, also wants us to have faith in Him. To walk faithfully and in obedience to His will and plan for us. To understand Gods will is also to understand His message in His Word today.

12.01.2022 Devotion 30 21/5/20 Deuteronomy 4:1-43 Dear all, God is good. Everyday we still have food on the table, shelter, we have our love ones, and we have our lives, we need to give thanks! And we need to make every day counts, be joyful, and to live it for Christ....Continue reading
12.01.2022 Devotion 40 16/6/20 Deuteronomy 27-34 Good day everyone, Gods grace and peace be with you all in this new week (Colossians 1:1-2). How wonderful it is that today we are already in Christ... Let us be reminded too, that they are many who also need this grace and peace of God...... We shall come to the last devotional guide for the time being. And our church is also starting the Bible devotional app next Monday (22/6/20). Deuteronomy 27-34 is a long section. But here, in this big section, in a summary... Moses is also summarising all that he has been preaching and teaching, and reminding the people of God, Israel, about Gods laws, the Ten Commandments, and with the other laws... In brief, he is also reminding them that if they obey God, there will be many blessings of God to come to them... But if they disobey God, there will be curses from God to come to them too... Moses also keeps reminding them to choose life, or to make the right decision now. They are to make this very important decision in their lives now, as they enter this new land, Canaan, that God is giving them. For us today, Gods Word also continues to remind us and direct us in many ways, to choose the life of righteousness before Him now, to choose the life that God sets for us... Deuteronomy is a book that teaches us that faith and obedience in God often leads to blessings... And unfaithfulness and disobedience also often leads to punishments and curses... Brothers and sisters, and friends, God loves us... His desire for us is really to grant us blessings, and bless all our generations to come, for those who walk faithfully before Him and keep trusting Him...
12.01.2022 Devotion 26 13/5/20 Colossians 4:7-18 Good day, everyone! We have come to the last passage of Colossians. ... May God give you guide and insight as you read His Word. There is a few encouraging points here in the passage today. 1. Paul never serves alone, he has a band of people who serve together for the church in Colossae, 2. They are people who are faithful, 3. They are people who are prayerful, and 4. They are people who work hard for the gospel of Christ, for the church to grow and mature. Therefore, let us be reminded that each and everyone of us also has a role to play in our church. As we work together and serve together with our gifts and willingness, and hard work and prayers put forward for the gospel of Christ in the church, it will all add to the church and edify the people at large. May God continue to lead us, to build and serve His kingdom and church. May we find joy, purpose and fulfilment in living for and serving Him.
11.01.2022 Devotion 28 19/5/20 (Week 10 of Church Online) Deuteronomy 1:1-46... Dear all, a very good morning to you all. We have gone back to a winter morning again this week... This week, we will start our devotional with the book of Deuteronomy. A book of Gods theological thrust in the Old Testament! (If I can put it that way) This is also the last book of the Pentateuch. I hope we can do our spiritual journey together as we read, meditate and pray with the Word of God. In chapter 1, verses 1-46, we can find 5 points here: 1. Vv 1-5, introduction, setting and background, 2. Vv 6-8, action, and to take the new land! 3. Vv Moses appointed leaders/judges 4. Moses sent out spies... 5. The people was unwilling to go, and they disobeyed and rebelled against God In this chapter, we find an introduction to Israels disobedience in the past. Moses was at the plains of Moab reminding them that God had punished them beforehand, for about 40 years, because of their lack of faith and unwilling to obey Him to enter this new land, that He is giving them. He had just led them out and defeated their enemies in Egypt, with His great power and might, and yet at then, they still chose to retreat and go into their comfort zones. The older/previous generation had past, the message and the sermon now is to remind the new generation who is entering this new land not to repeat the same mistakes as in the past. As we read this Old Testament text here, it is worth to look at our own lives too. Do we have faith in God today, in such that we are trusting Him and obeying His Word? When God ask us to move or move now, do we move for Him, out of faith and trust? Sometimes, blessings are out there, when we are willing to completely obey and trust... And sometimes, curses or punishments also come to us immediately, when we dont obey and trust...

09.01.2022 Devotion 38 10/6/20 Deuteronomy 19:1-21:23 Hi everyone, lets continue with the passage of study today on these 3 chapters. The chapters here can be broken down into the following sections and points. (adopted from George Athas commentary, 2016)... 19:1-13, cities of refuge, 19:14, boundary stones, 19:15-21, trials, 20:1-20, rules of engagement, 21:1-9, unsolved homicide, 21:10-21, family matters, and 22:22-23, capital punishment. There are a lot of things that can be said within these chapters. However, in a brief summary, lives are very precious in Gods sight. The chapters here also due with a lot of things to do with matters of life and death... God is serious with His demands for obedience, from His people... At the same time, He also provides a safe and fair environment for His peoples living, for the people in His community. The laws here, in another way, are also created to preserve lives of the people, and to govern their lives... Have you today, doubted Gods goodness, and Gods love and care for you, sometimes? Let us always remember, the God in the Old Testament, and the God in the New Testament, is the same God, who loves us, and who cares for our welfare and lives today...

08.01.2022 Welcome to the livestream of Hope Methodist Church 12th July Sunday service!
07.01.2022 Devotion 34 2/6/20 Deuteronomy 7:1-11:32 Dear all, I hope everyone has had a good long weekend. And managed to spend some fruitful time with your family or love ones. Time flies, we are now in June, in the year 2020. It has been a different year so far, but our God is still good to us, and He never change. He is still the same yesterday and today, and tomorrow!... Let us continue to pray for the world and this time of the pandemic. We will pray at 8 am again this Saturday, as a church. Let us also pray that as we open up the church for face to face meeting soon, we will come back and gather in one heart again as Gods people with the government regulations. Today, our devotional passage is a long one, stretching for five chapters... We shall look at these chapters altogether in brief in this devotional guide. The chapters can be categorised into the following sections and points. (adopted from George Athas, Deuteronomy: One Nation Under God, 2016) 7:1-6, the Canaan campaign: dismantling a wicked society, 7:7-16, Yahwehs choice, 7:17-26, finding courage, 8:1-20, Israels training program, 9:1-6, the wickedness of the Canaanites, 9:7-10:11, the wickedness of the Israelites, 10:12-22, Yahwehs demands, 11:1-25, obedience in the land, and 11:26-32, blessing and curse. Here, I think one of the hardest things to take is that God wants Israel to drive out all other nations living in Canaan, and get rid of them. In other words, the term for it, is that God issued a sacred ban to Israel. There is much to be said for chapter 7, but here we will summarise it... Israel was a minority among the minorities at then, and God wanted them to remain strictly holy for Him. For holiness is not contagious at all, but unholiness is extremely contagious. Moses reminded the Israelites a few important things here again, they are to remain holy and to remain faithful to God, as they enter Canaan. They must also remember to obey Gods instructions, and thus, the blessings of God will come to them... God treats His holy instructions very seriously to His people at that time. And He still is coming to the New Testament and our time. Our context maybe different to the time at then, but God still want all of us who belong to Him, to remain holy and in obedience to Him. Let us think about today, in our life and lifestyles, do we mingle the things and values of the world with our biblical teaching of Gods Word in the church, especially for things to do with holiness, and Gods holiness? Let us continue to think and reflect on Deuteronomy chapter 7. God does not issue a sacred ban to us, but He still wants us to be strict with some of His teachings and instructions for holiness. For our God is holy and we must remain holy too, and holy for Him. For Hebrews 12:14 also says, Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
06.01.2022 Dear all, This is our 5th week using online platforms for church. We are thankful for all of your commitments and dedications for church. May the Lord also add to you all strength and perseverance at this time. Look forward to see you in service again later! Lets continue to encourage each other! In Christ, Rev. Michael.

06.01.2022 Devotion 35 3/6/20 Deuteronomy 12:1-32 Dear all, hope you all are doing great in the new month of June. I think this week is a good winter weather of about 12-24 degrees. Thanks be to God for a different season of the year...... I have also learned much about the Word of God in the book of Deuteronomy, with our adults Bible study group these few weeks and months... Chapter 12 of Deuteronomy also leads us to see the Israelites life of worship, that is demanded by God. We can also breakdown the chapter into the following points for study... 1. 12:1-4, demolishing places of false worship, 2. 12:5-12, establishing a place of true worship, 3. 12:13-18, distinguishing the holy and the common, and 4. 12:29-32, avoiding false worship. This part of Deuteronomy is what we also normally called, the Deuteronomic Code, which begins here in chapter 12 until chapter 26. It provides the specific laws and cases that put the Ten Commandments into action. God here in chapter 12, wants Israel to have a right and proper worship for Him. In summary, God wants them to worship at one place, and to worship Him by performing the right sacrifices that He allowed. And also, He wants them to worship Him without any other worship places and altars, that are meant for other gods. For he cannot tolerate other pagan worshipping places. And lastly, they are to worship God rightly and without any unholy pagan rituals and practices. Deuteronomy 12 has a lot of significance to the whole Old Testament, in terms of the place of worship for Israel. And it also relates to 2 Samuel 7, and especially to the building of the temple of God in Ezras and Nehemiahs time. Coming to us today, in many ways, John 4 changes everything about the place of worship for Israel, to us... With the ministry of Jesus and His work on the cross, He changed everything about the ancient Israelites worship, for us... However, today, worship for us, is not bound to a place or a specific geographic location anymore. The right and proper worship of God is from the heart and in the Holy Spirit of God. In another way, we worship in the New Covenant, with Gods Holy Spirit in us. And we worship with Gods people together as a spiritual house, as in 1 Peter 2:4-5. And God still wants us to worship Him with a proper and right heart for Him. May God bless you for the rest of the week.

05.01.2022 Devotion 37 9/6/20 Deuteronomy 16:18-18:22 Hi everyone, good day and good week to you all. We are now at week 13, and we should be able to finish our devotion on the book of Deuteronomy when we reached the devotional guide number 40. And we will resume our church devotional guide probably some other time again. Thanks for going through this together...... Our church Christian Educational steward, Suleen, will also start the Bible application promotion for reading the Bible soon... Reading Deuteronomy well is one of the keys to understand the rest of the books and events of the Old Testament. We have looked at the topic of right and proper worship for Israel in Deuteronomy 12-16. Today, we will look at what is good leadership from the Word of God here... From the long passage today, we can see 4 kinds of leadership in Israel at that time. 16:18-17:7, the judges, 17:8-13, 18:1-8, the levitical priests, 17:14-20, the kings, and 18:9-22, the prophets. God ordains these leaders to be the leaders of Israel at that time. And Moses explains their roles and functions to the people... In all these leaderships, we can say that the role of the prophet is unique (like Moses), and he plays a very important role, even as a higher or more important role than the king. The prophet speaks the Word of God, and he delivers the message of God to His people. And he even speaks to the king, for Gods message and guidance for His people. And the king himself is also governed by the law of God (the Word of God). Good leadership must have the Word of God today. For us who serve as leaders today, we must also serve with the Word of God in our lives, by coming to God in His Word regularly, and immersing ourselves with His Word, for guidance and leadership direction too. God always guides His people with His Word, and the Spirit of God works with and through the Word too. Therefore, as followers of Christ today, we must also lead our days with the Word of God...
04.01.2022 Devotion 32 27/5/20 Deuteronomy 5:16-33 Dear all, after this pandemic of Coronavirus, what is your plan? Where would you like to go or travel? When the restrictions are lifted, what would you like to do first, socially, going out, and eating out? What is the food that you missed most, for eating out?... Let us continue to come to Gods Word today, for He guides us and counsels us through His Word today. His Word is the food of our soul, we need Him and His Word everyday. Dont let your spirit go hungry and starve without this spiritual food and nourishment. You can practice all kinds of distancing now, but do not distant yourself from God at this time. And you can practice all kinds of hygiene practices now, but this time you also really need to practice inward holiness in you, and social holiness with others. Everyday, we are also at least a step closer to the kingdom of God. Coming to todays passage, the remaining six commandments taught Israel how to relate to one another in their society, in their horizontal relationship among people. The vertical relationship is their relationship with God. And the first four commandments helped them to keep that. This actually also shows us that commandment number four plays an important role. To relate and keep their relationship with God, and deals with Israelite households relationships. The remaining six commandments due with family, preservation of life, recognition of marriage, property rights, a judicial system and personal responsibilities. After all, they are to preserve the society and to preserve the life of the people. These commandments may not relate to us directly today, as Christians. But the theological values do. Jesus basically reexplain their relevance to us again in the Sermon of the Mount. If we can summarise this, they can be summarised as the Golden Rule. Let us take this time to think about the Ten Commandments, do we understand their implications to us today? And how does the Golden Rule apply to us today? We will look at the Shema in the next devotion, in Deuteronomy 6.
04.01.2022 Devotion 39 11/6/20 Deuteronomy 22:1-26:19 Hi everyone, I hope all of you have had a good week so far. On this Sunday, we shall start our series of preaching on the book of Colossians in the New Testament. Here, let us finish the last passage of devotional for the week, with the devotional guide for today.... The passage today, is all about boundaries for the Israelites. As a commentator explains, Athas, These laws use such terminology as being inside and outside, entering and exiting, sending and receiving, including and excluding. Sometimes the Hebrew terminology doesnt translate across to English easily, so our English Bibles use a wide vocabulary that occasionally masks it... The passage can also be structured with the following points or sections (Athas, 2016) 22:1-12, animals and boundaries, 22:13-30, sexual boundaries, 23:1-8, entry into the assembly, 23:9-14, the military camp, 23:15-25, economics and boundaries (part 1), 24:1-5, marital boundaries, 24:6-22, economics and boundaries (part 2), 25:1-12, boundaries and personal integrity, 25:13-19, sundry laws, and 26:1-19, confirmation of the covenant community. Here, in this passage, we see a variety of laws, and reading all of them together may seem confusing, and we would think what is the focus here? All these laws are to protect Israel. We may not fully comprehend them, for ancient lives at then are quite different and they are quite complex too, compare to ours today. At the same time, these laws also serve to work in line with the Ten Commandments too, they are also extensions of the Ten Commandments... Coming to us today, not all these laws relate to us as Christians, who are under the New Covenant... Sometimes, as we read the Bible, with Gods instructions and teaching for us today, there would still be lots of things that we may not comprehend fully, but let us rest assured that Gods purpose is always to protect us, to protect humankind and to set them apart so that He can bless them. May God lead you and bless the rest of your week, as you read and meditate on His Word here...
04.01.2022 Devotion 27 14/5/20 Psalm 46 Hi everyone, good morning. Looks like the weather is warming up again, but there will be a difference of 18 degrees in a day. Thats the irony of Perth weather during autumn and winter.... We have finished with the devotion guide on the book on Colossians. However, I would like to continue to ask you to read and pray with the Word of God. Let us continue to pray for the pandemic of Covid-19 too. Globally, the spread in the world is still rising. Psalm 46 is a wonderful psalm of trust... psalm of confidence in the Lord. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Psalms 46:1-11 NIV https://www.bible.com/111/psa.46.1-11.niv
