17.01.2022 Introducing the artists behind the development. For more information about the development and the artists involved, visit: www.hopenewworks.com/development/coburg-melbourne One of the most exciting aspects of this development was the pairing of Composer Nicholas Gentile and Lyricist Brittanie Shipway with Writer Michael Bingham on his original Australian Story. We were able to announce Nicholas as a writer on the piece before the development began and Brittanie was introduce...d to the team during the development period to round out the writing team. Coburg, Melbourne is an epic war romance beginning in July 1939, just before Australia is flung into the second World War. James, a socially awkward University scholarship musician fills in for a sick choir accompanist at his father’s Church and meets a confident nursing student Elizabeth, who is destined to marry her stuffed-shirt, Army officer boyfriend. Through a shared love of music and a growing bond of friendship, the couple navigate through a tumultuous war-torn path to each other. How does the shy, pacifist James end up going to war? What sends the headstrong Elizabeth spiralling out of control? And how do they cope as their small Melbourne community is ripped apart by racial abuse and segregation inflamed by fear and the life-changing effects of war? This is a play about good people forced to cope with tragic circumstances. #hopenewworks #hope #newworks #developmentinitiative #artists4artists #CoburgMelbourne

01.01.2022 We share our gratitude towards those who made this final development possible, and we look forward to sharing highlights of this development with you through the week. It’s been a pleasure working with Spears Entertainment on this one, ‘The Lorelei and the Siren’. For the team at Hope, finally having a cohort of creatives assembled to realise the material together was a massive achievement given the challenges we’ve all faced in recent months. To be able to adapt with restrictions as they lift and to finally have one of our developments move from the online Zoom platform to The Palais Geelong was an extremely satisfying conclusion to our first development series.
