22.01.2022 BEATING THE CROOKS AT THEIR OWN GAME I’ve been working from home as most have and unfortunately there to receive phone calls from people pretending to work for Telstra, Microsoft, Netflix the Internet etc. all of them after identity or card details and all very slick and believable. Today’s call was something entirely different. I had a call from someone who purported to be from the Visa and Mastercard Security department. He gave me his name and ID number as if to validate ...himself, asked me to take note of them and went on to tell me that there had been some purchases made with my card on Amazon and Netflix. He told me the amounts and the name of someone who has apparently made these purchases. He asked if I knew this person and if I had shared my card with anyone in the family. He told me that the security department had put those purchases on hold. Which I said was good. But alarm bells were ringing for me from the get go. I asked him for his phone number. He gave one, but he faltered. More alarm bells. He then said that he needed to verify that I was the card holder and asked which bank my card was with. I answered the wrong bank on purpose (I just chose a major one). That’s where it should have ended because I gave the wrong information. He then said he would transfer me to the bank’s headquarters. I heard what seemed to be a legitimate recorded introduction to this bank. All the options, dial x for this, x for that, but instead it just automatically put me through to another person who asked me the nature of the call. I responded that I had been called by a person in the Visa & MasterCard security department. She asked his for his name and job ID. (All a part of the sham to make the call seem legitimate). She then asked me my name. It was at this point I told her didn’t want to provide it as I figured they should know since they rang/transferred me. I asked her where she was located. She responded Melbourne, Australia. I asked her for her address and she hung up on me. These people were gathering details of my identity. I knew very well that they were not legitimate and know what tricks these people get up to. So the moral of the story is no matter how believable the call seems, always err on the side of caution. Don’t give strangers any personal information whatsoever. If you’re concerned about your accounts or cards, call your Horizon branch direct to allay any concerns. Please note that everyone is at risk but none more so than older, vulnerable people who are generally more accepting. So please help educate your friends and family by letting them know about these shonky operators, how they prey on people and how to beat the crooks at their own game. They claim that they can see some ‘fraudulent’ purchases made with your bank card then they may ask to verify that you’re the card holder and ask which bank your card is with. They will likely ask for personal details such as name, date of birth and mobile number. Please alert your elderly neighbours and family members to be aware of suspicious callers attempting to gain personal and banking information.
