25.01.2022 While our full social program is temporarily suspended due to C-19, we are still providing essential transport journeys and exceeding all safety and C-19 hygiene protocols. One of our journeys enabled us to help one of our gorgeous clients celebrate her birthday ... Nanette and her fellow passengers thoroughly enjoyed her birthday cupcakes, baked especially for her by Service Co-Ordinator Karen. All HKCT clients are reminded that our transport services are available and as safe as we can make them. We recognise your vulnerability during these unprecedented times yet are extremely cognizant of your needs not to completely cut yourself off from life. HKCT will always look out for you!
25.01.2022 Do you want to read more yet find that it’s hard to get to the library? Or maybe books are getting too heavy, or the print is too small? Did you know both Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Libraries have e-books and audio e-books that you can borrow using your library card and then downloaded to a devise such as a computer, tablet, or mobile phone? There is a bit of setting up to do but help is available, or you may have a younger family member who could help you. And yes, you ...can make adjustments to the e-books settings, like increasing the font size. The latest magazines are also available to download titles such as Women’s Weekly, New Scientist, The Economist and Gardening Australia, to name a few. Think of the money you’ll save not having to buy your own copy, or the additional magazine reading you could be doing. So just join your local library and ask the library staff to help you set up your device. And yes, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Community Transport will help you get there! Have a go it’s fun Phone Hornsby Library: 9847 6813 or visit https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/library/branches/libraries Phone Ku-ring-gai Library: 9424 0120 or visit: http://www.kmc.nsw.gov.au//Facilities_/Ku-ring-gai_Library Make your transport booking now! 9983 1611
25.01.2022 One Dollar for every Australian to Give and give again Have you seen the latest coin produced by The Royal Australian Mint? We read that Tim Costello, Chairperson of the Community Council for Australia said: It might be a small coin, but it will circulate as a constant reminder to give and that can make a big difference. Believed to be a world first, the visionary behind the concept Adam Ferrie aimed to inspire a national spirit of generosity, not only for today, bu...t for generations to come. It is hoped that the Donation Dollars act as a gentle reminder: that as individuals we have the power to help those that are doing it tough. The act of giving these dollars, multiplied over and over for many years, has the potential to make a significant contribution to the lives of many. The Assistant Minister for Finance, Charities and Electoral Matters, Zed Seselja, said the coin served as a timely reminder of the challenges for the community, in view of International Day of Charity on September 5. This year, we know there are many Australians doing it tough in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Australias 600,000+ charities and not-for-profits have not been immune to the current economic challenges, Assistant Minister Seselja said. While we continue to face the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic together, the Donation Dollar is a long-term idea we hope continues to provide a simple reminder to Australians that if you are in a position to donate it, please do so. As a registered charity, HKCT welcomes every dollar donated and uses all donations to grow our services and/or assist those who are not in a position to contribute to our heavily subsidised transport services to the aged and others in need. We hope our supporters will start a new conversation about generosity and give when they can to help others. As Sydney Smith (1771-1845) said: It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little.
25.01.2022 Ku-ring-gai Council has put together this wonderful event for Seniors! We will be there and we hope you can join us!
24.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who attended our 32nd Annual General Meeting yesterday, it was a great day. Thank you to our wonderful Board Members who volunteered their time throughout 2018-19, we look forward to the year ahead. Thank you to our staff and volunteers who have worked incredibly hard this year to achieve our greatest overall results to date. Last but not least, thank you to our very important clients for your support and participation, we have thoroughly enjoyed providing transport to you all.
23.01.2022 As a not for profit organisation, we are honoured to work in tandem with other like-minded organisations and support the efforts of them to aid our general community. We also believe in the tremendous work that our Hornsby Kur-ring-gai Womens Shelter (HKWS) provides women and their children escaping domestic violence. Hence our sharing news of their fund raising appeal. HKWS is very close to being financially able to purchase a permanent home of their own - they just need another $200,000 to make that possible. If we all pull together we can make their dream a reality and strengthen our community. Donations can be made in the Lindfield or Turramurra branches of Bendigo Bank, at https://chuffed.org/project/safeplaceappeal

20.01.2022 You may have heard how our Australian Government is continuing to take action to help Australians whose mental health and wellbeing is being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. They recently announced provision of an additional $48.1 million to support the Mental Health and Wellbeing Pandemic Response Plan. Clients of HKCT are considered vulnerable community members and as such, it has been recognised that Older Australians have experienced high levels of social isolation d...ue to Federal guidelines and NSW State implemented responses. Such higher levels of isolation may also have led to anxiety about the illness and even death from COVID-19. Our clients may also be experiencing a reduction in healthcare services as a result of restrictions and/or not be able to partake in digital technologies designed to reduce isolation or continue with healthcare access. The Government is providing $19 million to Primary Health Networks (PHNs) throughout Australia, to deliver in-reach mental health services provided by mental health nurses. HKCT actively encourages all and any of our beloved clients to speak with their GP and ask for access to mental health services. There is no shame in asking for any type of help, even that which may once have been considered taboo, embarrassing, a sign of weakness or perception of reduced independence. Mental health nurses are as fabulous as our hospital nurses! Their ability to bring peace of mind through thoughtful, caring conversations may be all that is needed. So if you or someone you know might be struggling with emotions, please be encouraged or encourage them to reach out. It starts with a simple, sharing conversation with your GP See more

09.01.2022 Healthy and Active On line (HALO) is a 10 week free program for independent older adults 60+ years, who currently do not participate in physical activity programs and would be considered a beginner. It covers exercise and healthy nutrition options. The program is delivered entirely as web-based learning modules that the registered participants complete on-line, via the NSW Active and Healthy website, and they have assigned phone-coaches to provide the individual weekly phone... coaching to each participant to follow up how they are going with the education and the exercises. Rollout of this HALO program will occur in Northern Sydney Local Health District next year for Term 1 2021, commencing across NSW in week beginning 25th Jan 2021. There is no variation in this timeline as the modules are released weekly to participants at a state level.
