25.01.2022 2020 NAIDOC ART PRIZE The NAIDOC art prize held annually here at school and judged by Dr Briggs was once again a hotly contested art competition. With many artworks entered and now on display in the main corridor, our creative students have demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles of NAIDOC. The works celebrate the rich history and achievements of Australia's First Nations People. The theme this year was Always Was, Always Will Be. Congrat...ulations to Ashley Cong of Year 7 who is our winner and Danielle Imrie of Year 8 who is the runner up. Together they will both receive a generous book prize. 25.01.2022 IT' S OUR EMERALD JUBILEE - 90 YEARS SINCE THE SCHOOL OPENED! What happened at the beginning of HGHS? Words from the first Headmistress, Miss Agnes Brewster, in her first Foreword by the Principal for 1930 in the first School Magazine, the Torch -... This is our foundation year. After the fifteen classes were arranged, came the task of fixing uniform and badge (the Torch was chosen, representing the enlightenment of knowledge); the motto (Faith with Fortitude, also chosen as the title of the anthem); and rules; of planting trees and shrubs, of making gardens and rockeries. The training at school should prepare the girls for the greater fields of Contest in Life, after school is left behind. Gradually the girls, aided by the staff, formed the Dramatic and Debating Clubs, the Musical Association and sports teams. At a cost of 41,579 pounds, the buildings and ground improvements were officially opened on 3rd February 1931, but the first girls had arrived in September, 1930. In 1931, 400 girls filled 4 years classes from many public and private schools and were welcomed by the all- female staff who wore their academic gowns to classes. In 1932, with the first Fifth Year of 35 girls, there were 642 girls enrolled. Two dates we like to remember... *15th December, 1931 - the first Speech Day and Valedictory Torch Ceremony was held in the School Assembly Hall. *16th March, 1932 - 365 Hornsby girls and 10 staff travelled by train to Milsons Point Station to walk over the newly completed Sydney Harbour Bridge, 3 days before it was officially opened. Miss Brewster, first School Headmistress summed up the first full school year ... The building up of school traditions is begun; that wonderful, subconscious thing which is yet the strongest power in the school; for it goes deeper than learning, and farther than achievements in sport or position. This tradition, growing stronger as the years pass, will stir and stimulate the girls of future generations, until Hornsby Girls High School takes its place in the line with other great Girls Schools of the State. As 2020 goes by, we, the body of old girls spanning those 90 years, reflect on this little piece of HGHS history, and so many other memories. Welcome, welcome, to new Alumni Life Members from the current Year 12. Old Girls Union Committee, 2020

22.01.2022 TANAYA SUBRAMANIAN YEAR 10 REPRESENTS HORNSBY AT THE CHILDREN'S WEEK PARLIAMENT EVENT! On Thursday the 29th of October, I had the privilege of representing the Hornsby electorate at the 2020 Children’s Week Parliament event run by the Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP). Many children across New South Wales attended this event and it was held on the online platform Webex. The day started off with some members of parliament talking about their experiences being a pol...itician such as their proudest moments in parliament as well as their advice to younger generations. We were then given advocacy training on how to speak up about an issue that we were passionate about to a particular audience. This consisted of speaking tips as well as how to get your message across in a firm but respectful manner. Finally, the day ended with one minute prepared speeches by all participants where students were able to talk about an issue that they were passionate about. These speeches were presented in break-out rooms where special guests were able to watch them and provide valuable feedback to the students. There were some very important issues raised that young people are facing today and it was inspiring to see all these students come together to talk about them. Overall, the event was a very enjoyable and interesting experience where I gained a lot of new and valuable information. See more

10.01.2022 MR SCOTT NSW EDUCATION SECRETARY VISITS HORNSBY GIRLS The school was honoured to host Mr Scott on Wednesday 16 September from 11:30 - 12:30pm. Mr Scott visited three schools - Waitara Public, Asquith Boys and Hornsby Girls on Wednesday. Mr Scott spoke with a number of Year 12 and Year 11 students (in classrooms, in the library, in the playground and in study areas) and was amazed at how calm and relaxed our Year 12s are considering the stressful year they have endured. He was... also impressed with the new prefect body for 2021 and wished them every success as our future leaders. Mr Scott's mother attended Hornsby Girls in the 1950s and he took a photo of the 1950s Academic Honour Board to show his mother some names that might be familiar to her from that time. He was also interestred in the Judy Cassab Annexe in our library as his father had a portrait painted by Judy Cassab which Mr Scott displays in his home office. He was also interested to learn that one of our school houses is named after the suffragette Miss Rose Scott possibly a distant relative. Mr Scott was so impressed with the school he sent a tweet with the photos below to his followers and commented on the great teaching and learning at the school. He also wished the school all the best for this our 90th Anniversary.

Students who have successfully completed the Challenge will receive a personalised certificate (Diamond, Gold, Silver or Bronze), signed by the Premier of New South Wales. Despite the difficult circumstances of not being able to come together and participate in physical activity as a whole school, I want to congratulate all PSC students and staff for putting in the effort to stay motivated and accountable for their own health and wellbeing. Hopefully, next years PSC will be bigger and better.
