25.01.2022 With some new basic firefighter trainees and an upcoming Crew Leader, Hornsby Heights RFB was out and about training today! Crews of varying experience went through multiple drills and scenarios designed to prepare our members for any of the challenges which may come their way. Scenarios included motor vehicle accident while drills included refining draughting skills using both the portable and truck pump. Regular training is important not only to ensure that our skills are... always up-to-date, but also to practice some of the ‘softer’ skills, such as adapability in working with different crew members. Great job, everyone!

21.01.2022 Today members from Hornsby Heights participated in joint exercises with Muogamarra Rural Fire Brigade. We spent the afternoon preparing our Basic firefighter candidates for upcoming assessment, whilst giving our Crew Leader in training some valuable time at the helm.

20.01.2022 This Saturday Afternoon (7th November) weather permitting we will be conducting a small pile burn behind a residence on Somerville Rd. Smoke may drift across the road please exercise caution and reduce speed.

18.01.2022 HHRFB members DC Mal, Target, Emily and Petra are out at Old Northern Road HR today for a mid-week burn. Thanks for giving your time to help protect the community!

18.01.2022 On a very wet Saturday, HHRFB has welcomed its newest crew leader, Adam! Congratulations on all your hard work - HHRFB is proud of you and your hard work!

18.01.2022 Saturday will be a VERY HIGH fire danger day. Temps up to 41C, humidity 13% and winds from NW at 20-35 kph. For those out tomorrow with sport and other activities, drink plenty of water often, keep cool and take it easy. This is only our first hot spell of weather for the summer. Looking ahead, Sunday is likely to be severe with a total fire ban but we will update you on that tomorrow afternoon. Our district has strike teams ready to go on short notice CALLOUT for the weekend, just in case anything happen. As always, if you see an unattended fire, call Triple zero.

18.01.2022 Today members from Hornsby Heights, Killara Rural Fire Brigade & Ku-ring-gai Rural Fire Brigade participated in a joint training competitive exercise. Scenarios included property protection, motor vehicle accident, pumping, driving and hose drills. These exercises were carried out under covid precautions. We are happy to report that Hornsby Heights came out the overall winners! Well done to all involved.

18.01.2022 Thought it was hot today? Well, it’s going to be much the same tomorrow! With it being approximately 39C and SEVERE FIRE DANGER on Sunday, there will be a TOTAL FIRE BAN from MIDNIGHT tonight (Saturday, 28 November 2020). What does this mean? It means there is a ban on ALL open flames, including things like barbecues and incinerators, and general purpose cutting, grinding and welding... Today, a crew from Hornsby Heights RFB patrolled Crosslands Reserve where we found an unsupervised smouldering campfire which had not been properly extinguished. HHRFB extinguished the campfire and reminded campers in the area that they should fully extinguish any campfires to ensure re-ignition does not occur. Good advice for everyone too! Now is a good time to review your Bush Fire Survival Plan - use your dinnertime to discuss what you will do in the event of a fire. Please remember to only call 000 if you see a fire without any firefighting crews about. Did you know that you can spend 5 minutes putting together your Bush Fire Survival Plan? 16.01.2022 Thursday 1st October is the first day of the fire danger period for our area. The weather tomorrow will be a warm dry day with moderate winds and has a fire danger rating of HIGH. We have two fire danger boards in our area, one on Galston road outside the station and the other located at the end of Somerville Rd at the Crosslands gates. These signs are changed by our volunteers usually around dinner time to the rating for the following day. Now that we are in the fire danger ...period we ask all residents in our community to be aware of the fire danger rating and take action as per your bush fire plan. You can read more on the ratings on the RFS website: http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fdr-and-tobans

13.01.2022 Introduction of the Australian Warning System From 1 December 2020, the Australian Warning System and its icons will be introduced on the NSW RFS website and Fires Near Me NSW app. The NSW Bushfire Inquiry and the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements recommended the implementation of a national system to bring consistency to the way information and warnings are shown. ... The Australian Warning System includes a nationally-consistent three level warning framework across five hazards: bush fire, flood, cyclone, extreme heat and severe weather.
