It is true that a horse’s inner health plays an important role in their overall well-being and vitality. In fact, a horse’s behaviour, condition and performance can all be affected by poor digestive health. Horses in regular work, on full grain or... commercial feed diets or those that travel and compete often can be more susceptible to gastric irritation or digestive sensitivities. Below are some tips to help improve Digestive Health in your horse: - Provide adequate grazing or supplementary roughage when horses have limited pasture access. This will aid saliva production through the process of chewing. Saliva is a natural buffer against stomach acid splash. - Limit the amount of sweet feed or pelleted feeds given to horses as these feeds encourage rapid consumption, especially if not diluted with chaff. Rapid consumption of feed reduces chewing and the natural buffering action provided by salivation. Feeding large amounts of grain or high starch feeds can contribute to gastric ulcers and hindgut acidosis. - Avoid exercising or travelling a horse on an empty stomach, a small feed of long-chop lucerne chaff will support stomach acid buffering. - Make any dietary changes slowly as hindgut microbiota are sensitive to change. - Take care when providing ‘bute’ or antibiotics, long term use of such medications can upset stomach health and microbiota. If a long-term dose is necessary, provide a supplement to support digestive health. - Keep training as stress free as possible. Maintain a regular daily routine where possible to help reduce stress or anxiety. See more
