25.01.2022 Maintaining good relationships, managing horse welfare and risk, are all important concerns in equestrian communities. But a new study reveals that a pervasive culture of ‘bravery’, which requires participants to prove they have enough ‘grit’ and ‘commitment’ to be worthy of belonging, comes at a very high price. The article, which is published in the open access journal Animals, provides much needed clarity on at least some of the clues to why participation in horse-related activities is declining as well as increasing concerns over safety, welfare and inclusion. Highly recommended reading!

24.01.2022 (Warning: confronting topic) This is not something we like talking about, but its an important project by a team of Italian welfare scientists. Their work provides evidence that is needed to urgently raise the welfare standards and legislation around transporting horses to slaughter. We may not specifically breed meat horses in Australia like they do in other countries, but like them, we transport them over long distances to slaughter and we should do everything we can to reduce their stress throughout the process. A report by Christa Lest-Lasserre

23.01.2022 Tight Noseband? A poorly fitted bridle can give your horse as much discomfort as a poorly fitted saddle or bit. Bridle fit influences breathing and biomechanics potentially changing the way the horse moves and performs. Read the article: https://horsesandpeople.com.au/tight-nosebands-a-feel-good/ Natascha van Eijk from the ICPBC explains why tightening nosebands feels good in the short-term but damages the horses training and performance long-term. #twofingers #loosenup #horsesandpeople #ethicalequitation

22.01.2022 Happy ending thanks to the team who are trained in Large Animal Emergency Rescue. The important thing about mud rescues is to reduce the pressure and suction around the legs and body, which means horses cannot simply be pulled out of a situation like this - doing so could cause horrific damage. This is why you should jump at the chance to do any technical large Animal Emergency rescue training, like this free online course https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSdUd5x2jmU8zNTXB8/viewform

21.01.2022 Lest we forget In the latest magazine we commemorate the war horse through the lens of two of the greatest horse painters of World War I, Alfred J. Munnings, an Englishman, and Harold Septimus Power, an Australian. Art historian and horsewoman Dr Georgina Downey recounts the lives of these wonderful equestrian artists, whose works were over-looked at the time but whose legacies endure. Interestingly, both battled with disability and still managed to rise to the top of their... ranks. After the war, both artists went on to successful careers but it was their paintings of war horses that are the most moving and memorable in terms of capturing the horses' experience and the close relationship between soldiers and their horses. Read the whole article in the November-December Horses and People magazine Get your copy at a newsagent or purchase online and we will mail you a copy.

06.01.2022 Change Your Life With My Learning Online "I completed my online learning In December 2019. I used to work in pathology and found that it wasn’t the path for me and decided to look into study online. I completed horse care 1,2,3 and equine breeding with Learning Online, I then made the transition to one of the best decisions I've ever made.... The assignments were straight forward and the website user friendly. Our tutors were available when it came to any hurdles and provided useful feedback on assignments. It was the most uncomplicated, stress free learning experience I could have asked for. At the beginning of this course, I had some knowledge when it came to horses but I learnt so much that I didn’t know, particularly when it came to the farming side of things. Since completing this course I have gotten work at racing stables doing tasks such as swimming horses, taking horses to the track, putting them on the treadmill and walker. I have also now worked on a stud farm where I make up feeds, do feed runs, rugging, fencing, monitoring mares in foal, foal watch, help to deliver foals, weaning horses, sale prep, assisting with X-rays, branding, and also using the tractor and auger for daily farm duties. My life is changed for the better, I now enjoy every day of work and I would never look back!" Find out more at: https://www.mylearningonline.com.au/
