05.01.2022 Why we need to stop buying soap from the shops and what it does to our skin. Many store bought soaps are actually detergents, not soap at all! They dry out our skin and erode the delicate acid mantle that is designed to protect our skin. Both my daughter and I get eczema when we use store bought soaps. This is why I started making my own pure soaps. I knew there had to be a better way. Pure Soaps are made using lye (sodium Hydroxide, or Potassium Hydroxide and water) emulsi...fied with fats or vegetable oils in a process called saponification. Derived from the Latin sapo which means soap. Saponification takes several weeks to complete and all the natural glycerin remains, unlike commercial soaps, which remove the glycerin to put into moisturisers and beauty products. They know how moisturising it is but they remove it from their soaps??? Glycerin is an emollient. Emollients, or moisturisers help keep the skin dry by reducing water loss from the epidermis - the outer layer of skin. Emollients keep the skin moist and supple by providing a protective film. For people with extremely dry skin, such as those with eczema or psoriasis, emollients are an essential part of their daily skin care. Factory made soaps are made from the continuous method, where saponification takes place while the ingredients are under pressure in a large vat. This method permits raw ingredients to be added continuously to one end of the vat while soap is continuously removed from the other end. The high pressure in the vat, combined with high temperatures and the addition of a catalyst causes almost immediate saponification of the ingredients, after saponification, the soap is exposed to hydrogen, which will further harden it. What do we know about hydrogenated oils? That's right, they are trans fats, saturated fats, which are really bad for us. They make them like this to cut costs as this method makes it possible to use lower grades of ingredients to cut costs. If you are interested in learning to make your own pure soap then I have an online course which includes a step by step video and a 40 page guide with recipes and everything you’ll need to get started making your own pure soap whether for personal use or as a side hustle. https://hotoilymumma.com.au//the-ultimate-soap-making-onl/

03.01.2022 Is there such a thing as natural bubble bath? These days we all know about the importance of self care but self care should not come at a price for either our wallet or our health right? One of my favourite self care activities is having a bath. I used to love filling it with bubbles and soaking away for hours. That was until I learnt how bad the ingredients in bubble bath products are. They actually dry out our skin and can even cause urinary tract infections. Definitely not... something I want for me or my two girls. Now I’ve tried buying and making natural bubble bath before but you don’t seem to get many bubbles. I started experimenting for a kids school holiday workshop I was running and finally I came up with a recipe I love. Not only are there bubbles but there are no nasty ingredients that mess with our hormones like phthalates and parabens (methyl, ethyl, propylparaben) which are often hidden in the term fragrance on the ingredients label. I avoid any product with fragrance listed as an ingredient no transparency in labelling no sale. So what’s in my favourite natural bath bath recipe? 150mls Young Living Australia Bath and Shower Gel or the Young Living Kidscents bath gel 100mls virgin coconut oil (in a liquid state) 100mls distilled water I use this so the bubble bath lasts longer than just using tap water 1 tsp bicarb soda aluminium free 12 drops Young Living Grapefruit essential oil 6 drops Young Living Ylang Ylang essential oil 3 drops Young Living Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil- this is the best eucalyptus for kids Method Put all ingredients in a glass jug and mix well. Store in an empty Thieves dish soap container so you san easily squirt the mixture in to your bath tub. Plus it is a great way to reuse your empty bottles #ylearthday Shake before using. Pour 1 cup of bubble bath in the running water. More bubble bath liquid results in bigger, foamier bubbles! This is a great activity to do with your kids. Stay tuned for a video that Tiggy made showing everyone how to make the bubble bath. It’s super cute and I love the bloopers. I even made up cute labels for your bottles. There are two to choose from and you can download them for free from my website https://hotoilymumma.com.au/diy/all-natural-bubble-bath/. I print these on Avery labels L7109 and make sure when you go to print them you print at 100% (not the 97% that most printers are set to print at) otherwise the images won’t line up in the labels. Enjoy your self care!!!
