24.01.2022 Dear Jim, Thank you for writing to me regarding your concerns in relation to the End-of-Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying) Bill 2020. As a Registered Nurse who had worked for many years in aged care, like you, I hold a strong conviction that such legislation is unnecessary and threatens people at the most vulnerable point of their lives. I am also a passionate advocate for the need for best practice palliative care, thus negating any need for assisted suicide. As a form...er Minister for Human Services and Disability Services, I am also very concerned for those Tasmanians who are elderly, sick, depressed, living with disability and are vulnerable, who may feel pressured to not be a burden and to therefore have their lives prematurely terminated. Considering all of the challenges currently facing the future of our State with COVID-19, such as increasing issues with mental health, jobs, the cost of living and the economy; proposals to relax the laws relating to suicide and to provide a legal exoneration for those that are actively and deliberately engaged in the premature suicide of another person should, I believe, be Tasmania’s lowest priority.
