15.01.2022 Online Oil Analysis instruments are a significant investment and an invaluable tool. However, if alarms are going to be ignored because "they always do that", then why bother. In the example at site X, moisture saturation sensors were installed and the alarms were confirmed with Kf Titration.... Costly oil replacement, premature pump failure and TBG corrosion were the resulting damage. Time consuming vacuum dehydration eventually saved the second fill from being discarded. Simple investigation revealed a leaking heat exchanger on an 11,000 litre system. No thought was placed on why the cooling water circuit required constant top up. The peaks illustrate the alarms and when these failures occurred. Moisture sensors are as good as the training that changes the mindset. Alarms, PM's and oil analysis are all only as good as the training, the technician and the organisation instilling the behaviours.
