25.01.2022 The treatment of Headache and Migraine needs to be: Specific Accurate Gentle... Careful In order to improve symptoms in both short and long-term.

25.01.2022 There is a rare type of headache/facial pain called a: Short-lasting Unilateral Neuralgiform Headache Attack with Conjunctial Injection and Tearing - or SUNCT for short. This is a cousin of the Cluster Headache and Trigeminal Neuralgia... but causes random stabs of pain in the head and face which can last between 1 second and 10 minutes. ... The neck can be a cause of this pain due to the way the brain processes input coming in. Its a horrific pain for those suffering - it can be random, and put extraordinary fear into the strongest of people. Any head or face pain, no matter how strange or how it behaves.... if your scans are clear and the Doctors are out of answers - it is worth having the top three joints of the neck assessed.

25.01.2022 **Which joint causes which pain?** In this special video produced for National Headache and Migraine Week, Chris explains which joints cause what pains! Watch the video and click this link find out if we can help https://www.hpmcentre.com.au/headache-migraine-week... ---------------------------------------------- The top three joints can refer different pains in different ways, and sometimes all three can cause issues simultaneously... sometimes one side, and sometimes on both sides. And sometimes, its none of them and its something else entirely... which is why a full Assessment is always needed. The video explains about the joints involved, how we assess and formulate a treatment plan. 23.01.2022 A TOUR OF THE MEDX MACHINE Yes, I agree that the machine looks a bit intense, but the reality is that this Machine is the best way to isolate and strengthen the muscles of the lower back. The point of the machine is to force the back to do all of the work, and to do it in a way that is safe, objectively measured, and tailored to your age, weight, height and ability to move. ... In order to force the back to do the work, then its crucial to make sure that your legs and hips cant "cheat" and to do this, its necessary to restrict leg and hip movement. The picture shows the key features: The Weight Stack is on the side of the machine and can go up in increments of 1 foot pound of Torque. The machine doesnt measure how heavy you can lift, but rather how much force it takes to move the chair. This is actually really important because for those whove felt weak or tired in their backs, this is actually the measurement that is the most important. If you cant produce enough force to lift or hold yourself up, or lift that box or child off the ground, then the machine will tell you what you need to do so that you can. The Angle Measure can be locked in at increments of 3 degrees, right up to full bending. This is excellent because if you have a disc or muscle that gets cranky, we can lock the machine in so that all movement is short of pain, while still getting the benefit of using your muscles. This feature has helped people even with acute, full-blown disc bulges get relief without the need for surgery. The Knee Pads, Thigh strap and Foot Plates are there to hold your legs down so that you cant lift out of the chair to help the movement. The Counterweight on the side allows us to standardise your data measurements - obviously if you weigh more, you can already lift more from a baseline. This feature balances out your body mass, so we can compare people to their age, height and weight - while having an understanding that everyones functional needs are different. Thankfully because we have seen thousands of patients over years, we know what the right target should be. The MedX Machine is excellent for the following conditions: Disc or nerve Issues with the following spinal levels: T12-L1, L1-2, L2-3, L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1 Disc Degeneration Disc Bulges Disc Protrusions Disc Extrusions Foraminal Stenosis Nerve Root Compressions Spondylolisthesis Osteoarthritis Facet Joint Arthropathy SIJ dysfunction Multifidus Wasting Non-Specific Low Back Pain Active Trigger Points in the following muscles Quadratus Lumborum Psoas Major Iliopsoas Gluteus Maximus, Medius or Minimus Piriformis Syndrome Post-Surgery cases, including Micro-disectomy Laminectomy Fusion Rizotomy Disc replacement Get in touch with us to find out if the MedX is for you https://www.hpmcentre.com.au/contact

22.01.2022 It sounds like a living nightmare. Your asleep, and you start dreaming about the onset of a headache or migraine. Then you wake up with one.... This is called a hypnic headache - we've seen maybe 4 or 5 in 8 years - so it's very rare... but could you imagine how terrible it would be to live through that?? If you are living through that, the same things apply... what could sensitise things, and how can you change the input. Heaps more research to be done on this condition. https://buff.ly/2J35lXy

21.01.2022 The main rotation joint of the neck is the C1-2 joint - while its uncommon for this joint to be stiff, there are some tells that can give hints of its involvement.

21.01.2022 If theres one positive from 2020 - there are less huge parties and gatherings, which means less "self-inflicted" headaches and migraines...! Enjoy your weekend and stay well everyone :)

20.01.2022 How is your brain like the ball-tracker in a tennis match? This is particularly relevant for people living with dizziness. Here's the thing... keeping your sense of balance is dependent on three systems - your eyes, your ears (vestibular system) and the top of your neck. All three systems must work together to produce the correct "user experience".... In a ball tracker like the one in the picture - you need 6 cameras placed around the court, a computer then takes the data from those 6 cameras, and then can produce very accurately where the ball landed. If, however, one of those cameras failed, or wasn't calibrated properly, the ball would be blurry on the screen, or perhaps even an "error message" would be shown. Picture your 2 ears, 2 eyes and both sides of your neck as your own 6 cameras. If one of those systems isn't working quite so well, you can get the feeling of dizziness, or feeling like things "aren't quite right". If you are suffering with dizziness, particularly after a whiplash injury, trauma or neck pain - it is worth looking at all three systems to check where the issue may be. This includes people living with vestibular headaches and migraines, or cervicogenic dizziness. Contact us: https://buff.ly/2THZ3Pt

20.01.2022 Its really common to hear about the importance of "goal setting". Setting a goal gives a target to aim for, I agree... but whats the main thing that stops people from achieving it? A routine.... When youre tackling a really big challenge, a good first step is to think about (and commit to!) creating a routine or process to take you in the right direction. Tackling Headaches and Pain is not a "once-and-done" thing... it requires a concerted and targeted effort on your behalf. Having a daily routine is a key to achieving the results you want.

20.01.2022 There are some rare conditions that come through the clinic that can have the neck as the main driver. Chris describes 3 of these conditions: 1 Silent Migraine 2 Trigeminal Neuralgia... 3 Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome ... as part of National Headache and Migraine Awareness Week. To find out if your neck may be involved, click this link: https://www.hpmcentre.com.au/headache-migraine-week

18.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Headache and Migraine do not make up a significant part, whatsoever, of medical training. Its unbelievable! This is why Chris opened the clinic in 2013 - he knew that there were people that needed help and saw first hand the help that comes from assessing things thoroughly. ... In fact, according to one report: "Medical schools averaged only one hour of preclinical and two hours of clinical headache teaching. Although 97% of neurology residency training directors or chairs believe that migraine is a valid neurological disorder, only 80% of neurology residencies have a lecture devoted to headache." Its little wonder that at times, people living with headache and migraine can be left in the dark by way of treatment options. Find out more about how we do things here: https://buff.ly/36B1etv

16.01.2022 Those tight bands that you cant get rid of. The rollers, pokers, balls and sticks you use to try to relieve them. Unbelievably, the Academics are still arguing about whether they exist!... Chris talks about the options on how to reduce that pain and muscle tightness in this short video.

16.01.2022 August was National Tradies Health Month - and we saw a vast range of Plumbers, Builders, Carpenters and Painters for their Back Pain. The most common complaint was that their backs just felt really "tight" at the start of the day, and "weak" at the end of the day. This pattern usually indicates that the back needs to be stronger in order to do the tasks they need to for work. ... Where the model is pressing in the photo is where L4 and L5 are in the back - this is the centre of gravity. If the muscles adjacent to these are a little less strong than they could be, it hurts and aches - but seems to improve when it rests for a while. If the back is stronger, it means you can do more without needing to stop as often.

15.01.2022 The top joint of the neck is where the neck meets the skull... it can refer pain in some very specific ways. Who can relate to the feelings I mentioned in the video?

14.01.2022 If youve woken up and not been able to turn your head - youll know what Im talking about here. An Acute Wry Neck is what its called when first thing in the morning, you wake up and have this horrific pain, where you literally cant turn or move without feeling like a knife in the side or back of your neck. Who has had this before? It is usually caused by a joint or disc being held in one spot overnight, and then the muscles around it spasm as an overly protective mechani...sm. In the long run, these types of pains are relatively harmless, but give you a real fright! The best thing to do is to move as best you can, and seek advice about the best ways to reduce the immediate pain. In most cases, it settles down pretty quickly with the right advice!

14.01.2022 Do you get Neck Pain while Driving? Consider Three Things: 1. Strength and endurance of your neck muscles 2. Comfortable and supportive seat set up 3. Strength and endurance of your SHOULDER muscles.... Why the Shoulder as well? When you drive, your arms are outstretched - which means your shoulder muscles need to have the endurance to hold your arms out. If theres some decreased strength, then your neck muscles (especially the muscles that force you to shrug) can take over.

14.01.2022 The more you know about your pain and how it works, the more confident, sure and certain you will be about the movements you can do, and how much to push yourself. Theres more to it than you think! A good starting point if youre frightened of a flare up is:... - use "the point of first discomfort" as your guide - do movements that are Pain Free as much as you can. - consider seeking advice from a professional about the different things (some that you may not be aware of!) that can cause pain to happen. 13.01.2022 The team says - Stay cool this weekend!

13.01.2022 The first appointment discussion between you and your health professional is paramount for success. Ask yourself: - Did they listen to you? - Did their diagnosis make sense?... - Did they present you with their full plan to get you the best result? - Did they answer your questions? These are vital to give the best chance of treatment success!

13.01.2022 If you have all joints of the upper neck contributing to your headache or migraine pattern, it can be very confusing to diagnose from a "medical" or "diagnostic" viewpoint (ie. what do we call it??) - but simpler if you think that it can be one joint at a time, or a couple at once, that causes the symptoms.

13.01.2022 Retraction is an excellent exercise for headache and migraine, when the neck is involved. There is a causal relationship, for a lot of people, between a forward head posture and neck-related headaches. Drawing your chin back in can be a good way to get those joints moving, and reduce that sensitivity.... When doing the exercise, it should make the pain and symptoms better, not worse. We teach this exercise to almost every patient with headache or migraine symptoms. (You should always seek advice from your health care professional before you begin a new exercise program)

07.01.2022 I hear people say to me - "Gee that persons so lucky - theyre better and Im not". Is it really good luck? While it is obvious that sometimes, there are conditions that simply cant be improved 100% (no matter how much we want it!), its a sad fact that at times, people form habits that dont help themselves. This might be expecting a "quick fix" when one isnt possible or feasible, or living in denial that the problem being faced "isnt that bad" when the reality suggests... otherwise. Or - and we ALL do it - we know there are things we do that arent helping (think bad diet, exercise, sleep etc), but do them regardless. Whats really needed are two things: 1. A treatment plan 2. Commitment to following that plan. In the picture, those two things are below the water. Its not easy but its very rewarding when the results finally come to pass. Our most successful patients listen, ask questions and get involved in the development of a treatment plan.... and then are accountable to following it. Simple... but not always easy!

05.01.2022 Wont be long til we see these again!

04.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? There is now a lot of evidence that Knee Arthroscope Surgery, commonly known as a "clean out", may not be as effective at reducing pain and increasing function as we once thought. Even with Osteoarthritis or Meniscal tears, where surgery was once thought to be a certainly, its not really now the case.... Much better to now get moving and strong, and use other physical strategies to normalise movement and increase function.

02.01.2022 Shocking and Electrical Face Pain can be a real mystery for doctors, dentists and other health professionals alike - and terribly painful for patients. 02.01.2022 Neck Pain at the computer? Strength and Endurance of the neck and shoulder muscles have been shown to be more important than your posture or desk set up. It explains why some people with really "good" set ups can have pain, and some people who have "terrible" set ups can be totally OK.

02.01.2022 Chris talks through a simple exercise that may help your migraines and headaches. Not recommended for those with congenital neck defects or history of trauma to the head or neck, without medical supervision. The exercise should make your head symptoms better, not worse. If it makes it worse, dont do the exercise and seek an appointment... if it makes it worse, its probably the neck that is involved, but needs a different course of treatment!
