25.01.2022 We are back in the training centre! ARTC trainees returned for two days of practical experience on relay interlocking last week. Learning to repair faults requires hours of hands on fault finding instruction at the training centre, so happy to be back so these trainees can further their experience and get closer to completing. ... They sat the first three days on zoom learning the theory of operation.

25.01.2022 With everything slowly going back to normal for all of us in Vic, here is a timely reminder of some simple ways to find time to study in around everything else life throws at you. What do you find works best for you? I find reading from a hard copy, not screen, and writing notes helps me to remember what I'm learning. And morning is definitely my most efficient time.

Our reputation is high quality, innovative and more importantly renowned for developing highly skilled, respected talented students. Are you experienced in rail signal insta...llation, maintenance, testing, fault finding? Looking for a better work-life balance? Want to move away from the extended shifts, need your weekends back? If this is you check out our job advert on SEEK, we’re looking forward to hearing from you! Not sure this is for you? Feel free to call Phil Nankervis to find out more. 20.01.2022 This month HRD awarded Danial Smith of UGL with his Cert IV in Electrical Rail Signalling. Dan has worked and studied tirelessly throughout the two years, always showing a high level of enthusiasm. It has been a pleasure and we look forward to seeing where Dan progresses next in his career. Congratulations Dan!

20.01.2022 Last week another ARTC apprentice completed all the training and assessment requirements for the award of Cert IV in Electrical Rail Signalling. Thomas Curran from Ararat has worked extremely hard throughout this year with an increase in self confidence. We’ve enjoyed his enthusiasm and willingness to ask for help. We wish Thomas all the best for the future in Rail Signalling. Toms parting comment was I’m in shock and can’t describe it, no more assessments you could not get a guy more happier than Tom.

20.01.2022 Congratulations Jacob Demarchi! (Jan 2020) Another one of the V/Line night shift trainees who made the learning seem easy. We enjoyed having trainees like Jacob as he gets on with the tasks allocated without questions, and when a question is asked you know he has already given it plenty of thought. That is a great skill to have when you are troubleshooting difficult signalling failures. We wish Jacob all the best for the future in Rail Signalling.

20.01.2022 On-job competency assessment is a critical step in determining whether a trainee has achieved the skills and knowledge to work on safety critical signals equipment. Today Chris of Wabtec Control Systems started his Cert IV in Electrical Rail Signal on job practical assessments. Given the busy state of the melbourne train network HRD assessments are safely conducted in the confines of the Rail Academy Newport. Set in near live rail conditions Chris is maintaining a signal, adjusting lamp voltages, checking wiring and proving correct operation.

19.01.2022 Today Liam Hobbs was awarded his Certificate IV in Electrical Rail Signalling. All the staff at HRD wish Liam all the best for his future in signalling. He has studied hard and achieved very good results.

19.01.2022 We at HRD have been working hard on not only staying connected to our wonderful clients and students during lockdown, but also with each other. Every Friday we have a team meeting via Zoom. Emails and phone calls are good, but it’s so nice to be able to check in every week and see each other’s faces, and have a few laughs. Some of us are in regional Vic, and others are in Metro, but we are all working together, from home, to bring you the best HRD has to offer. How has your workplace or family being keeping in contact?

12.01.2022 Lets have a bit of fun to kick off the long weekend! HRD wishes all our employees, trainers and clients a safe and happy Easter!

11.01.2022 Zoom has been an integral part of keeping HRD functioning during lockdown. Our trainers got a crash course in online learning and have worked extremely hard to make sure our trainees are still learning and developing their skills. This pandemic has taken so much from everyone, we wanted to make sure their learning stayed on track. Zoom and online learning has presented some versatility for HRD and not only has helped us now, but will make big changes for our future!

11.01.2022 What is Competency? Some Australian providers suggest you attend training and without live assessments and examinations that trainees are competent. This is not how we approach training in rail signalling. HRD takes a serious and safety critical approach to determining one is competent to perform in highly dangerous rail employment. This week Phil Nankervis is assessing ARTC trainees on live equipment between train traffic.... Liam has this week completed signals, points and relays competency assessments. Peter started his first assessments today taking on Generator Set. The trainees must engage with train control, comply with worksite protection and complete a typical maintenance routine, followed by a series of questions relating to breakdowns and applying correct course of actions. Well down Liam and Peter.

11.01.2022 We wrapped up our 3 day ARTC on the job assessments today, by introducing Emma with her first live signal maintenance competency assessment. What’s normally a straight forward pedestrian crossing battery maintenance assessment revealed a techical problem requiring a series of unexpected testing putting Emma into a unexpected part of Power Supply maintenance. Trainees like Peter and Emma will learn a lot from these early on the job assessments. Lessons learnt here reinforce...s classroom principles that will contribute to the next phase of their two year training. Watching young people grow and develop into highly skilled signal maintenance technicians is the very reason we love our jobs as trainers. Well done Emma and Peter. Thanks also to Ben Woods for his support this week.

10.01.2022 Keep an eye out for some new content from HRD! We have some cool things planned, some graduate celebrations, some glimpses into how we have been working in lockdown and our plans for the future. What would you like to see on our page? Comment or send us a message. ... Happy Friday!

09.01.2022 It’s moments like these that gives trainers a lot of pleasure. Trent is pictured being awarded his Statement of Attainment by Peter (Lofty) and Gary in Launceston. After many months of training, assessment and on job assessments no wonder Trent has the biggest smile. A big shout out to Kelly (assessor) and Gary (Sig Elec) for all your hard work. All the HRD team wish you well as the latest Signal Electrician at Tasrail.

09.01.2022 Toms got his sights set on being a Signal maintenance technician. This is the start of the prac assessments and time to ask the apprentice what’s the correct globe size ? Its a long way up there if you’re got the wrong one ( and he has the correct globe )

07.01.2022 These new MTM SMT trainees are learning the fundamentals of track circuits. Their first practical session was to confirm the civil and electrical installation matched the designed drawings.

06.01.2022 We’ve had a highly productive three days in the field in Adelaide with ARTC’s Signal maintenance trainees Rhys W and Dale D, assessed by Phil Nankervis. Rhys and Dale completed assessments in: rail signal wiring; cable repair; cable testing; power supply maintenance; signal maintenance; and level crossing maintenance. Today we had the pleasure of Kelly’s (pictured) expert help at Two Wells. ... A big thank you to the local SMTs Glenn, Geoff and Kelly for your onsite support to ensure the trainees get time to be assessed.

06.01.2022 This week HRD started a Metro Trains Melbourne Cert IV trainee group. The group undertake a 27 month program learning the Victorian standards, installation, maintenance and fault finding techniques for all of the Metro signalling system. The group is supported by a collaborative mix of HRD trainers and MTM trainers and assessors. At HRD we have an inclusive policy to ensure the classroom is accessible to maintainer, installers and graduates. In this group we have MTM, V/Lin...e, ARUP and JJJ Electrics. Good luck to all trainees and welcome to HRD. See more

05.01.2022 Congratulations James Ellis + Simon Wallis! James and Simon came into Cert IV training as signal construction trainees. James, the quiet shy guy, never a lot to say, always the short answer, and Simon wanting to know everything. Both James and Simon would ask questions when they needed to and when this happened you knew they were listening and going ok. Both James and Simon had the difficult task of working in V/Line signal construction, where very little maintenance work tak...es place. They learned alongside a very experienced crew of signal maintenance technicians. We encouraged James and Simon to ensure they asked for lots of maintenance experience as it is vital experience to pass the Cert IV. We never really saw James or Simon out on site, all their practical assessments were conducted by V/Line assessors and the feedback was great. Well done to both James and Simon we wish you both all the best.

05.01.2022 Great news for Victoria! Well done everyone. Some of our trainees got a little messed around by this circuit breaker lockdown, but will be back on track thanks to the hard work and communication by our trainers and staff.

04.01.2022 Mondays! Am i right? Extra shout out to all our Victorian members, stay safe, and try not to focus on the fact its another Monday during a lockdown.

04.01.2022 After two years of hard study and perseverance you can hardly wipe the smiles off these guys faces. Today they completed the last day of training in Certificate IV in Electrical Rail Signalling. There has been 15 modules and a total of 87 days in class. Well done and thank you all for the hard work. Hans and I have enjoyed every day in class. You have been outstanding.... Pictured below: Tom C , Hans B (Trainer), Liam H, Kurt W, and Dale D.
