25.01.2022 World Ocean Day (8th June 2019) began in 2002 and has been celebrated globally as an opportunity to raise awareness of the beauty and importance of protecting the ocean. The ocean is known as the lungs of the earth because it helps keep the climate healthy. Most of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean which makes it imperative to protect our oceans. We can do that by stopping pollution which travels into the ocean. Sadly, most of the rubbish left on the ground ends u...p in the ocean. There are over one million precious sea creatures in the world which makes protecting our oceans critical. The ocean is a beautiful part of our environment and we can do our part by protecting it. FUN FACT - There are 5 oceans in the world: The Pacific Ocean Largest Ocean in the World. The Atlantic Ocean Second Largest Ocean in the World. The Indian Ocean Third Largest Ocean in the World. The Southern Ocean Fourth Largest Ocean in the World. The Arctic Ocean Smallest Ocean in the World. Human Factors Institute

25.01.2022 Insights on how the brain learns best. What are your thoughts? People have different learning styles. Some learn better with visuals, others with written and spoken word. Most people learn best when information is presented in multiple ways (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). Context is crucial some types of information might be better presented visually. It is a good idea to consider delivering information using a mix of all three where appropriate. Who learns best while te...aching others? Sometimes we don't really understand something until we try to explain it to someone else. The brain is brilliant and complex and there is still so much to learn!

25.01.2022 Today is PTSD Awareness Day. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a treatable anxiety disorder affecting around one million Australians each year. PTSD occurs when fear, anxiety and memories of a traumatic event don't go away and interfere with how people cope with everyday life. Anyone can develop PTSD at any age. Women are more likely to develop PTSD than men. About 12% of people living in Australia will experience PTSD in their lifetime. Serious car accidents are the l...eading causes of PTSD in Australia. Everyone will respond to trauma differently. Symptoms of PTSD can vary greatly, these can relate to changes in day-to-day life, withdrawal and numbness, to distressing flashbacks or physical anxiety. The main symptoms of PTSD are: re-experiencing the trauma (memories, nightmares or flashbacks). avoiding reminders of the trauma. negative thoughts and mood. being very alert and having a physical response to sudden changes that could be a sign of danger. PTSD can be a long lasting and debilitating condition and have a negative impact on individuals, relationships and families. It can also lead to depression or substance abuse. With the right support and treatment, recovery is always possible. #humanfactors #humanfactorsinstitute #hfiaustralia https://www.beyondblue.org.au//anxie/types-of-anxiety/ptsd

23.01.2022 R U OK? Day is a national day dedicated to reminding people to ask family, friends, work colleagues and anyone else in your world the question, "R U OK?" Asking this question in a meaningful and respectful way is something everyone can do to make a difference to someone who might be struggling. Sadly, it is estimated that 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt every year, with an average of 2,320 people dying by suicide every year. Around 45 per cent of Australians will ...experience mental illness in their lifetime, while 20 per cent are affected every year. Since this campaign began it has been reported that more conversations between family, friends and work colleagues are taking place and, more people are seeking help because someone has reached out to them. Our Director Frank Muscara shares his thoughts in this article http://ow.ly/dI1b50w6bBO

21.01.2022 Today September 10, we acknowledge Suicide Prevention Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimate suicide claims the lives of over 800,000 people worldwide each year. A higher number attempt suicide, with many occurrences going unreported. Each death, and every attempt, is not just a number - and have a devastating impact on families, communities and workplaces. Physical and mental health issues such as depression, are among the most common factors affecting people ...that contemplate and commit suicide. Other factors include financial problems, abuse, aggression, exploitation and mistreatment, with substances and alcohol abuse also playing a role. On this day, the focus is on prevention strategies and emphasizing public awareness towards social stigma and suicidal behaviours. This greater awareness of suicide, as well as encouraging conversations about this topic, is critical in preventing suicide. Mental health professionals encourage openly discussing suicide as it can encourage those in need to get support, with the idea that these discussions will put ideas into peoples heads being a myth. Our thoughts go out to all the families, friends and workplaces that have been affected by suicide.

21.01.2022 World Youth Skills Day 15 July 2019 World Youth Skills Day is one of new UN International Days of observance. The UN General Assembly encourages World Youth Skills Day by informing governmental organizations, educational, volunteering and public institutions to organize different activities, that can help young people overcome obstacles regarding their employment and build the necessary skills for their future. This day exists to encourage youth to build their skills and be w...ell educated. Building skills and engaging in education gives youth a way to achieve personal success and fulfillment in their lives. So why has the UN declared World Youth Skills Day to be a International day of Observation? Well, here are a few reasons as to why it is important: Today, there are 1.2 billion young people aged 15 to 24 years, accounting for 16 per cent of the global population. Did you know that Young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults? Worldwide youth are continuously exposed to lower quality of jobs, greater labor market inequalities, and longer and more insecure school-to-work transitions. women are more likely to be underemployed and under-paid, and to undertake part-time jobs or work under temporary contracts. Rising youth unemployment is one of the most significant problems facing economies and societies in todays world, for developed and developing countries alike. Two strategies that are critical to ensure youth are engaged in the workplace are investing in education and training in order be well informed, equipped and educated. Education and training have the following benefits: equipping youth with the skills required to access the world of work, including skills for self-employment. can also improve responsiveness to changing skill-demands by companies and communities, increase productivity and increase wage levels. can reduce access barriers to the world of work, for example through work-based learning, and ensuring that skills gained are recognised and certified. can also offer skills development opportunities for low-skilled people who are under- or unemployed, out of school youth and individuals not in education, employment and training (NEETs). 21.01.2022 When people are asked the question "do you have a learning style?" often people will respond with "Yes, I am a visual learner" or "I learn by doing." Do we really have a "learning style"? Rather than labeling a learner in such a way, it is a good idea to match the learning style to the task. ... As the author in this article says "The best way to teach something might depend on the nature of the material itself. For example, it would be hard to teach geometry without diagrams or reading and writing without words." Do you believe you have a learning style? http://ow.ly/DfbM50wpUMl

15.01.2022 This week (Sept 22-29) is World FTD Awareness Week. Dementia is a problem of the elderly, right? Generally that's true. But there is one form of the disease that can strike people when they are very young, in their twenties or even their teens. It's called Frontotemporal Dementia, or FTD. And while rare, it devastates lives by rapidly turning young, vital people into those who need constant care.... FTD slowly destroys the "social brain." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Muq0XEuC0fw

13.01.2022 World Humanitarian Day On the 19th August 2003, the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad was the target of a terrorist attack and 22 people lost their lives. The UN General Assembly formed World Humanitarian Day (WHD) to be commemorated on this day. The World Humanitarian community has organized global campaigns to commemorate WHD, advocating for the safety and security of humanitarian aid workers, and for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises ...around the world. Millions of civilians around the world are constantly affected by armed conflict every day. People in cities and towns struggle to find food, water, and safe shelter, while fighting drives millions from their homes. Innocent children are recruited in some parts of the world to fight, and their schools are destroyed. Women are subject to abuse and humiliation. Whilst humanitarian workers deliver aid, and medical workers treat the wounded and sick, they are often directly targeted and prevented from bringing relief and care to those in desperate need. This year there will be a campaign formed called the hashtag #NotATarget movement. This movement is demanding world leaders to do everything in their power to protect all civilians in conflict around the world.

13.01.2022 Colour Blindness Awareness Day - 6th September Colour blindness or colour vision deficiency (CVD) is most commonly a genetic condition and affects more boys than girls. People who are colour-blind can't see some colours or see them differently from others. Some forms of CVD arise as a result of a genetic change during development, trauma to the brain or retina or degenerative eye disease. Few people with CVD are blind to all colours. The colours people have the most difficul...ty with are greens, yellows, oranges and reds. Parents and caregivers are usually the first to detect signs of CVD when children start learning their colours. CVD can cause some challenges in life such as: - having trouble distinguishing between red and green traffic lights and safety signage, - having restrictions on working in occupations that involve warning lights and colour coding such as police force, pilot and Electricians. For some people with CVD, tinted filters and contact lenses may help them to distinguish different colours better. If you are involved in the design of computer interfaces, CVD is an important human factor to consider. This article has great design tips to help you design for better colour accessibility https://usabilla.com/blog/how-to-design-for-color-blindness/

12.01.2022 Hermann Ebbinghaus (January 24, 1850 February 26, 1909) was the founder of experimental psychology of memory. Among his most famous discoveries are the forgetting curve, the learning curve and the spacing effect. By promptly implementing what we have learned, we are less likely to forget it. Keep this in mind when creating learning solutions.... What strategies do you use to ensure you remember something?

10.01.2022 Today 30th July 2019 is International Friendship Day which was established in 2011 by the UN. Friendship is important to us at HFI - if you look closely at our logo, you will find the friendship symbol used by Native Indian tribes hidden in one of our letters. In Australia each year friendship day celebrations are held across our states. People use this day as an opportunity to celebrate the important people in their lives. Friendships are powerful relationships that we find... over time can build strong ties of trust between people and generate a sense of unity, peace and harmony. Friends are very important in the workplace. Do you have a best friend at work? So, why are we asking the best friend question you may wonder? Research by Gallop has shown that there is a concrete link between having a best friend at work and the amount of effort employees expend in their job. For example, women who strongly agree they have a best friend at work are more than twice as likely to be engaged (63%) compared with the women who say otherwise (29%). 10.01.2022 This article about "super agers" is an interesting read. As the brain ages, we generally start to think more slowly, we are less able to multitask and our ability to remember things gets a little wobblier. What causes this? The widespread thinning of the cortex, the brain's outermost layer. ... Yet researchers have found that this change does not affect everyone. So-called super agers retain their good memory and thicker cortex as they age, a recent study suggests. https://www.scientificamerican.com//ldquo-super-agers-rdq/#

10.01.2022 In human biology, handedness is a better, faster, or more precise performance or individual preference for use of a hand, known as the dominant hand; the incapable, less capable or less preferred hand is called the non-dominant hand. Today (13th of August) is International Lefthanders Day. First observed on the 13 August in 1976, the purpose of the day is to promote awareness of the inconveniences facing left-handers in a predominantly right-handed world. Seven to ten percen...t of the world's population is left-handed with men slightly more likely to express a strongly dominant left hand than women. Famous left-handers include Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama, Jimi Hendrix, Oprah Winfrey, Julia Roberts and Lady Gaga. Whether you are left or right-handed, we all use the same brain hemispheres. It is important to consider handedness in service and product design and development, as well as usability and user interface design. #productdesign #handedness #humanfactors
