25.01.2022 Using windscreen wipers on a misty morning is equivalent to tuning a depth sounder to improve visibility. Clouds of herring can smother the bottom, the same ...as thick fog restricting your view of the countryside. If in search of animals you may need to look closely for the flicker of an ear, or the shape of rabbit or kangaroo bent over feeding in the grass. The sonar snapshot below reinforces why a trained eye is critical when interpreting sonar images. A huge school (tens of thousands) of 120mm herring cover the bottom, hiding the predators patiently waiting below. Not only can some predators colour match their surroundings but they can mimic the rocky cover. The 15kg estuary cod has been detected below the bait school, the looong spaghetti-like marking is highlighted for your benefit. The vessel is stationary, the screen still scrolling, the cod remaining within the signal beam for a long time and therefore marking as a continuous line. This is just one example of how important it is to understand your sonar, plus the habits of marine life and intended target species. It took two minutes to catch the cod once it was identified- rigging and presenting a bait to suit its hunting style. 23.01.2022 ARE YOU READY TO CHANGE UP? If we never take any chances, we never rise above average. If we don’t stop to consider the outcome of our efforts and study how we might improve our performance, then we cannot possibly learn the lessons necessary to gain better results. We remain stalled in averageness, watch the time clock, collect a pay check, watch the seasonal changes even though we don’t change ourselves.
