24.01.2022 Working with our exceptional cook Jenny (who is a Chicago trained chef and holds a menu planning and child nutrition certificate), we have recommenced the implementation of our healthy eating and nutrition awareness projects with the children. This week the children created spinach, zucchini, broccoli, parsley and cheese muffins. They were so delicious that every single muffin was eaten and we are planning on making more in the near future. We have worked as a community, wit...h educators from all rooms planting different types of vegetables and flowers with the children. Because of the amazing weather, our parsley and spinach grew in abundance. Jenny derived a super delicious recipe for the children to make muffins and we began the harvest. Children used fine motor muscles to chop and grate the vegetables, and later mix and squish the batter into a shape that will fit the muffin trays. We found that with the understanding of the soil to plate concept, the children had more insight into not only how our vegetables grow, but the realisation that they taste even more delicious when you add them to other ingredients! :) #healthyeating #EarlyLearning #earlylearningnutrition #preschool #soiltoplate #gardening #earlychildhoodeducation #earlychildhoodgardening

17.01.2022 In the preschool room we have been looking at the alphabet in an artistic manner. We have been recreating our names with loose parts, using some example cards created by the educators at the centre to guide and inspire. The children looked at uppercase and lowercase letters and how we use these within our names. The children also looked at the shapes of each letter as a means for early literacy recognition. There was such creativity and divergent thinking occurring as children had to solve the problem of how to create each letter with the shapes of the loose parts they had. There was such satisfaction as each name was completed :)

11.01.2022 As we upgrade our gardens, an addition of sandstone rocks sparked some interest as our children played. Two children were found trying to crack some rocks in a bowl. With some impulsive intentional teaching at play, some hammers and a stable base were added for a group of enthusiastic children to join in some rock smashing. Different implements were used to experiment with force and effect. Some beautiful powders were created and children were wondering what we could do with ...this. We added some glue and tiles, and children began to create artworks with the powders smashed. Some looking at colours that were developed while others used the natural environment, such as leaves and the shapes of the rocks, to add glue and create the outline or silhouette of these objects. This experience allowed children to partake in a risky play scenario, where they were given the opportunity to joining a unique experience and add challenge into their play to show children that they are capable and independent. Children in the natural environment learn more about natural elements around them and helps their growth and development as they learn through mistakes, experiment with cause and effect and enjoy challenges in their play.

05.01.2022 To celebrate Science Week, the children at Huntley Street Early Learning experimented with a range of materials, and reactions that were caused by mixing them. Groups of children created theories to hypothesise what may happen when one element was mixed with another, then tested their theories as they added liquid to solids and powders. There was a lot of messy play involved, loads of giggles and beautiful social interactions and conversations as children collaborated as they worked on their learning processes with peers and educators. Accidental slime was created, goop and explosions with a range of materials. #scienceweek2020 #earlylearning #preschool #preschoolscience #naturalmaterials #messyplay #messyplayideas
