25.01.2022 Wouldn't we all love financial stability in our businesses? Here's a 3 session online workshop starting next week "Designing Stable Profits with Regenerative Agriculture".

23.01.2022 Hello Everyone Thanks for your interest in Huon Farmers for Action on Climate Change, and now the Regenerative Agriculture Network of Tasmania (RANT). The Huon group has expanded to encompass the whole state to ensure that as a group of volunteers, we can efficiently reach as many people as possible with an interest in the role agriculture has in addressing climate change and in farming regeneratively.... UPCOMING ACTIVITIES Agfest Field Machinery Days --- The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association have invited us to join them in their tent. An affordable way to promote our cause to over 65 000 people in May 2019. Conference --- We are holding a Regenerative Agriculture Conference in Launceston on 5-6 June 2019. Guest speakers include Charles Massy, author of The Call of the Reed Warbler; Graeme Hand, Holistic Educator and grazing expert; and Colin Seis, pastured cropping expert. We have also invited successful regenerative farmers from around Australia to provide case studies. We are aiming the conference to all scales of producers, from market gardeners to broadacre graziers, croppers and horticulturists. Workshops --- on regeneratively grazing and cropping, as well as holistic financial management are planned for after the conference. The workshops are pending receiving a grant we have applied for. YOUR PARTICIPATION Involvement --- If you would like to be involved in the organising of any of these activities, or additional ones, please contact us by return email or phone Celia on 0429 931 640. We would love to hear from you. Membership --- of the Regenerative Network of Tasmania is $20 per person or organisation. Your membership will provide valuable seed funding to buy promotion materials for Agfest and the conference. The benefit to you will include a seasonal newsletter and networking potential at this early stage, with more benefits to follow. A membership form is attached to this email, complete with banking details. Keeping in touch --- in the future will be through the membership emails from RANT or through our Facebook page. RANT structure was formalised this week to enable us to apply for grants. We have finalised the constitution (thanks Margaret Steadman) and elected office bearers. President - Celia Leverton. Vice President - Phil Jackson. Secretary - Margaret Steadman. Treasurer - Ruth Hall. Public Officer - Alana Betzold. Committee - Graeme Hand and 3 pending members. We look forward to working together to encourage the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices in the state. Kind regards Celia Leverton President Regenerative Agriculture Network of Tasmania [email protected] 0429931640

22.01.2022 "Cover Cropping Uncovered ~ Building Soil Health and Animal Performance" workshops with Colin Seis are now coming to the north and south of Tassie! The works...hops venues to be finalised. If you have booked in the north west and would prefer another venue, please message me - no problem. The north west workshop is at Wynyard https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/cover-crops-uncovered-build

21.01.2022 Momentum is building towards our conference here in Tassie 5-6 June! Case studies from successful regenerative farmers are a mainstay of the conference along with our keynote speakers, Charles Massy and more. A critical subject given agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, while having the potential to be a major contributor to sequestrating carbon in the soil.

20.01.2022 Coming to the Huon!

18.01.2022 We can't farm regeneratively if we aren't viable. An awesome course for producers and other business operators! I've done this one and it is the most on point, useful course I have ever done....... even more so than the 2 year certificate in rural business management. Highly recommend it! Graeme Hand is an experienced and effective educator who engages participants, and ensures you will go away with a financial plan that will work for you and your business.... 05.01.2022 A Biochar forum will be held at the Cradle Coast Authority offices next Thursday on the 31st of October. The forum will provide information on the scientific pr...inciples underpinning biochar and highlight opportunities for Tasmanian industries to consider using waste streams to produce biochar for a variety of purposes. For further information follow the link to the Tamar NRM website: http://www.tamarnrm.com.au//biochar-forum-tamar-valley-bu/ or to register your interest get in touch with Greg from Tamar NRM at [email protected] See more

05.01.2022 Hi everyone! At the last meeting of the regenerative agriculture working group we decided to go with the name Regenerative Agriculture Network of Tasmania (RANT) to encompass our statewide focus. However, there is still a need to balance statewide promotion and collaboration with a local focus in each area. As this group emerged from the Huon Farmers for Action on Climate Change, we are considering merging the two. Other options include having the HFACC as a local branch of RANT or keeping the two groups separate, but with overlapping membership and interests. Please indicate your preference below :)

01.01.2022 Central to his approach is the on-farm production of humus, a remarkable gel-like substance, half carbon, that holds four times its weight in water. At a soil d...epth of 30cm, for instance, just one percent humus will store 160,000 litres or 16mm worth of rain. In simple terms, the encouragement of humus production will help a paddock bounce back after drought. Pastures allowed to decline to the point where soil biology is impacted will take so much longer to return to full production. Dollars already lost in the dry won’t return to the coffers until much further down the track. https://www.theland.com.au//drought-action-requires-groun/ "He's improved pastures, grown deeper root systems, constructed six kilometres of permaculture swales and planted more than 6000 trees. Walking across the farm, the spongy feeling pastures give an indication of how much humus has been built up in the soil. Explaining humus, Mr Morris said it is the holy grail of farming. "The first part of the process has been described as cannibalism; the breaking down, so it is all pulled apart by these clever little microbes and then there is this miraculous process where they put it all back together in a new form, it's actually been described as the product and source of life, so it is actually the end and start of new life, it is quite amazing," http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2015/10/07/4327138.htm "In a study published August 2 in Nature, scientists show that this process is speeding up as Earth warms and is happening faster than plants are taking in carbon through photosynthesis. The team found that the rate at which microbes are transferring carbon from soil to the atmosphere has increased 1.2 percent over a 25-year time period, from 1990 through 2014. While that may not seem like a big change, such an increase on a global scale, in a relatively short period of time in Earth history, is massive. The finding, based on thousands of observations made by scientists at hundreds of sites around the globe, is consistent with the predictions that scientists have made about how Earth might respond to warmer temperatures. "It's important to note that this is a finding based on observations in the real world. This is not a tightly controlled lab experiment," said first author Ben Bond-Lamberty of the Joint Global Change Research Institute, a partnership between the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Maryland. "Soils around the globe are responding to a warming climate, which in turn can convert more carbon into carbon dioxide which enters the atmosphere. Depending on how other components of the carbon cycle might respond due to climate warming, these soil changes can potentially contribute to even higher temperatures due to a feedback loop," he added. Globally, soil holds about twice as much carbon as Earth's atmosphere. In a forest where stored carbon is manifest in the trees above, even more carbon resides unseen underfoot. The fate of that carbon will have a big impact on our planet. Will it remain sequestered in the soil or will it enter the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, further warming the planet? To address the question, the team relied heavily on two global science networks as well as a variety of satellite observations. The Global Soil Respiration Database includes data on soil respiration from more than 1,500 studies around the globe. And FLUXNET draws data from more than 500 towers around the world that record information about temperature, rainfall and other factors." https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2018//180801131607.htm http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2015/10/07/4327138.htm
