25.01.2022 Although we have had brilliantly sunny days in Brissie recently the nights have been cold, single digits (shock horror!!)!! We really need our pool heaters to be working perfectly. Last Friday there was a glitch and .the pool was too hot!!! Most unusual. When there is a glitch sometimes we have to reboot the heater. Problem is the heater is on the roof. Of the shopping centre. A quick trip to the roof for Julie and I followed. This involves 4 vertical ladders and a lot ...of tin roof to traverse!! And good non-slip shoes. And afterwards quads, glut and calf stretches !!!! Thought Id share the view to the mountains from the roof. All in a days work !!! See more

25.01.2022 Exercise is important at any age. Particularly as we age. We need strength (to climb stairs and heave ourselves out of low chairs!!). We need balance and co-ordination to help prevent falls. We need challenging activities to keep us alert and to stimulate our brains. We need to stay fit to keep up with the grandchildren and for heart and lung health and to try to delay or manage chronic disease (such as diabetes, dementia and osteoarthritis). Exercise can be as good as, or better than, some medicine!!! At Hydrotherapy Brisbane our Wednesday at 1pm class has all of these components to help promote active ageing and maintain function. Ring for more info!! Tell the grandies!!!

25.01.2022 Have you tried aquatic exercise during pregnancy? With all the known benefits you should give it a try!!! Contact Hydrotherapy Brisbane for more information!!! Did you know the Guidelines of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for exercise during pregnancy and the postpartum period analysed aquatic exercise research and found that aquatic exercise was a safe activity, with advantageous effects on oedema (swelling) and thermal regulation, and that the b...uoyancy of water minimised the risk of joint injuries. Another study out of Sweden (Granath A, Hellgran M et al) found water aerobics diminished pregnancy-related low back pain & sick leave due to pregnancy-related low back pain more than land-based physical exercise programs. Cordero et al (2015) found that regular maternal exercise (with both aerobic and muscular conditioning) on land and in the water reduced the incidence of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, and is strongly associated with a decrease in gestational weight gain, and preserved glucose tolerance. Studies also show that supervised physical exercise during pregnancy reduces the level of depression and its incidence in pregnant women (Perales et al 2015). Contact Hydrotherapy Brisbane for class times or to get an individual, one on one session.

22.01.2022 Carers are wonderful people. Kays husband has Parkinsons Disease. They see a physio at Hydrotherapy Brisbane, but, in between the most important person is Kay who makes John do his aquatic exercise program and work hard. I noticed them in the pool, and although Id seen Kay doing her own program, I hadnt seen her with John before. She stood out as she guided John with his exercise to make him work harder, bigger, faster!!! Lots of visual and verbal cues. Theres a glint in Johns eye as he slams the ball down. What is he really aiming at? . I think he was aiming at Kaylene!!!! It is part of his Move for Parkinsons exercise program prescribed for him here at the pool. Job well done Kay and John. You get our second Brownie-points award and score a 10 pass pool voucher ($90) to keep you exercising and motivated!!

19.01.2022 September is Dementia Awareness Month. There is no doubt that Hydrotherapy & aquatic exercise can play a role in both preventing dementia in an ageing population & improving some symptoms in those already living with dementia. Various studies looking at aquatic exercise in an older population or those with dementia showed significant increases in executive function, attention, & memory performance, reduced behavioural & psychological symptoms & improved psychological well-b...eing in people with moderate to severe dementia. Hydrotherapy & water-exercise can also reduce concerns relating to falls and fracture & also the pain associated with lower limb arthritis. As a result a higher intensity of exercise (linked to better outcomes) may be able to be achieved in the water in people with joint & other age related musculoskeletal conditions. Consider hydrotherapy & aquatic exercise as a strategy to fight some aspects of dementia. At Hydrotherapy Brisbane we have 1-on-1 aquatic physiotherapy, class or carer-training options for people living with or wanting to prevent dementia. September is Dementia Awareness Month. See more

Since January 20th Julie and I have been in Singapore after being invited by the Singapore Institute of Technology (which now has university status) to teach all their current undergraduate physiotherapy cohort about Aquatic Physiotherapy. 18.01.2022 The Hydrotherapy Brisbane Facebook feed tells me it is 50 days since you heard from me. OK. Well in that time Julie went to New Zealand for 2 weeks to visit her brand new second grandchild and her nearly 2 year old first grandchild. Then a week later went back to new Zealand to accompany her daughter and grandchildren back to Brissie for her sons wedding. Then her son got married (we did lots of the flowers) I packed up and sold my house to downsize.... It all been a bit busy to facebook!! We also just ran a 2 day Hydrotherapy course for the new staff at the brand new Canberra University Hospital. They have a brand new pool. It was so new we had to pull the packing tape off things!!!! The hospital is so brand new it wasnt on google maps (nor was the street) so the taxi couldnt find us at night after the course!!! It was freezing cold in Canberra (-6 degc at night)lovey frosts to greet us in the morning but the pool was warm!!! The days were sunny while we were there, which was nice. Not that we were outside!! We had 22 or so physios, exercise physiologists and allied health assistants all eager to use their pool and help their clients!!! Thats life in a nutshell for the last 50 days!!! Tell that to Mr Facebook!!! See more

17.01.2022 It seems as though many New Years Resolutions are off and "running". Our first Monday at 12 class for 2018 got off to a great start today in the deep pool. Brenton combined HIIT (high intensity interval training) with strength, balance and flexibility. Some of our Wednesday evening groupies even showed up today!!! With the average age of the group sitting on 70.5 years you might think that it is an easy class. It isnt. Dont be fooled. It may be easy on your joints (low im...pact) ..but thats all! The health benefits of such a class are enormous!! Heart, lung, diabetic risk factors, pain management, strength, cognitive function, weight management and much more!! Get Fit, Stay Fit at Hydrotherapy Brisbane. These classes are on Monday at 12 and 5pm, and Wednesday at 6pm. Enquire about other (or slower) options. See more

16.01.2022 This November one of our wonderful team members Ashleigh is taking part in SIP week to raise funds to find a cure for spinal cord injury! Generally I think we all think that 2020 sucks but every year Spinal cord injury sucks. As a result of paralysis and lack of movement and sensation many people suffering with paralysis are required to drink all beverages out of a straw (just one of the many ways life changes for people with paralysis), so for the first week of November Ashleigh will be drinking everything through a straw! Get on board so we can suck it up together!! Follow the link and please donate to help Ashleigh reach more than her goal for SIP week!!!! https://www.sipweek.com/ashleigh-kemp

13.01.2022 Some photo opportunities are too good to miss!!! After all the hard work helping Julie with Camerons physiotherapy Nicole thought the time was right for a bit of motherly fun. The inflatable wheel is a kid's toy but this mum was letting her inner girl out when she went for a ride on it. Soon after she was found having a well needed snooze!!! Meanwhile Cameron and Julie are sneaking up on her ready to wake her from her peaceful moment!!! We love a happy Cameron!! Sensational Smile!!

12.01.2022 This delightful gentleman has Parkinsons disease. There are many physical therapies for Parkinsons, and aquatic physiotherapy is one of them. Brother John came along to the pool to improve his gait and his balance, his posture and his confidence and to get stronger and fitter he found himself rowing, and punching and dancing and jumping . and yes playing the drums. Large exaggerated, dual task and complex movements can help with retraining the brain in Parkinsons Disease. In this case trying to get rhythm while balancing and hitting hard enough to make a big noise Brother John always liked to march to the beat of a different drum!!!!!!

11.01.2022 Such a lovely thing to do!!! I answered an email from a mother in England whose daughter lives in Brisbane and is pregnant for the first time. Its also the first grandchild. She wanted to buy a gift voucher for her daughter to attend an AquaMums class here at Hydrotherapy Brisbane to see if she likes it. As a grandmother to be with 2 daughters pregnant, one in Brisbane and one in Perth (due a day apart) I recognized the feeling of a distant mother wanting to help a pregnant... daughter. Perth is far away but the UK is sooo far!!!! So we have gifted the daughter a second class ( you need to do 2 to get a good idea about a class!!!) It our not-so-monthly Brownie-Points award for good deeds and warm-fuzzies!!! AquaMums classes for pregnant mum's-to-be, Wednesday at 5pm or Friday at 9am at Hydrotherapy Brisbane. Individual physio sessions are available for those with significant back or pelvic pain. See more

11.01.2022 How many more sleeps?? Three if I have my dates right!!! It has been a challenging year in many ways but we are all looking forward to a break which for many will include family, friends, food, fun, and if you are lucky maybe a gift or two. I know someone who must be high on Santas list. Poppy is 2 weeks post major multi-level back surgery. She basically has a neck to waist zipper-like scar down her back, and with the metallic rods in her back she will likely set off the al...arms at the airport. But she also has the biggest smile on her face!!! There is no doubt that the modern approach to this surgery is very different to what it was years ago. However the attitude, determination and drive of this young lady is stunning and helped make the whole process seem so straightforward (and I know it is not!!!). Today was Poppys first day back at the pool, and her back and posture is so much better than before the surgery!! She was sitting so tall in her wheelchair!!! Most people at the pool knew Poppy had been in hospital, and most were in awe of her attitude and smiling face. Many much older people would be grumpy for weeks (apologies to all, but you know who you are!!!!) Im pretty certain Poppy is grateful to be home before Christmas (not in hospital), with a great surgical report card (and a great school report card no doubt!!). I am certain she is also grateful for such wonderful support from her family and friends. Poppy you are truly inspiring!! At this time of year before we get too far into the giving and getting, sit back for a moment and count those things for which you are grateful. All the small things. All the simple things. And look no further than Poppys smiling face to see how we can all learn to put a positive spin on many situations. Have a peaceful and safe Christmas and New Year from all of us at Hydrotherapy Brisbane. See you in 2018 See more

09.01.2022 Super clever lady!!!! Very inspiring. It is something that people just don't talk about...unless it happens to them or someone close to them! as well as being a clever invention this little video will have informed so many!!

09.01.2022 Do you know anyone who's pregnant? They will love our classes!!

08.01.2022 Age gracefully. Learn a new skill. Cheryl fancies tennis. Cheryl has Parkinsons disease but anyone of us can benefit from learning a new skill to improve and enhance cognitive function as we age. Balance, co-ordination, and a range of other skills are involved. Who has booked their favourite armchair to watch all the finals of the Australian Open Tennis this weekend? If you have never played tennis it could be one of the skills you can pick up to capitalise on neuroplastici...ty to strengthen connections in the brain or begin new ones. Maybe you could start in the pool. (No racquet throwing allowed). Puzzles and similar things arent as good as more challenging and complex things.but dont give up the puzzles they are still good for you..choose more complicated ones. Tennis not for you? Learn how to juggle 3 balls. Learn a complicated card game. From experience I can tell you that learning to deep water run can be both a physical and mental challenge for some! The evidence that there is plasticity in even the ageing neural system adds to the consensus that behavioural solutions can help to slow down the rate of cognitive ageing. See more

06.01.2022 So it's cool outside. We actually made it to single digits last night (9 deg c) in Brisbane........and it's not even winter!!! However the weather is heading to a balmy 25 degrees today so no complaints please!!!. If you are feeling stiff and cold first thing this morning the best advice about is to get moving!!! Head to the pool at Hydrotherapy Brisbane. No doubt these ladies are discussing the weather and many more things ....who needs a coffee shop to have a gossip!!! Balance exercises in progress!!! Multi-skilling!!!

06.01.2022 Sometimes, when youre pregnant and you love your AquaMums classes you just want to get there early or stay a bit late and just have a float!!! Or in fact do a hand-stand!! Just because you can!! Stay fit. Get fit. Be strong. Stretch. Relax. Relieve. Learn. @AquaMums classes: Wednesdays at 5pm and Fridays at 9am.

06.01.2022 Many of you have seen or spoken to Clare. She has been one of our patients for many years, following us from pool to pool. Clare plays Ten Pin Bowling at state and a national level and has done much for the sport at all levels. A friend nominated Clare to be a baton bearer in The Queens Baton Relay leading up to the Commonwealth Games. Last Friday Clare carried the Commonwealth Games Baton as third carrier out from Government house. She met Kieran Perkins who accepted the baton from Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey and she generally had a ball. For someone with a number of challenging medical issues this has been such an achievement!! Well done Clare!!

05.01.2022 A teacher would say theres one in every class-room!! Well theres at least one at every pool!!! Larger than life people who make you smile. Who make you laugh!! This particular lady has followed us across town from our previous pond. We call her the lady with the BIG HAIR behind her back. And to her face. We all want whatever product she uses in her hair!!!... She lifts your spirits when you are down, she makes you laugh, she is observant and caring. She walks past the office window and if we are glum she stops to entertain us. On this particular day she sang us Where is thumbkin. We now call her crazy lady behind her back (No we dont.Just kidding). Crazy lady also wears mad hatter ear-rings!! Denise with the BIG HAIR and mad-hatter-earrings wins our first Brownie-Points award for 2018 for efforts above and beyond to improve the humour of our staff!!! Enjoy your 10 pass pool voucher!!! 05.01.2022 Each year, on September 8th, we celebrate World Physiotherapy Daya global event recognising the role physiotherapists play in the community and the relationships they have with their patients. This years theme is Choose Physiotherapy. On World Physiotherapy Day, we promote awareness of the benefits of physiotherapy in the prevention, maintenance and treatment of injuries to ensure all Australians can get the most out of their life. Thankyou to our wonderful team of physios at Hydrotherapy Brisbane: Gretchen, Clare, Brenton, Patrice, Julie and Judy. And THANKYOU for choosing us to be your physios!!!!!

05.01.2022 Brain Awareness Week has just finished. It is the global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research organised by the Dana Foundation. Every March organizations worldwide work together to celebrate the brain for people of all ages. This includes increasing awareness of the research and headway that is being made into so many areas. Here at hydrotherapy Brisbane we have many clients effected by conditions that effect the brain from ane...urysm and stroke to Parkinsons disease, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. We try to follow research in all areas of medicine and physiotherapy to ensure we can guide our patients with the latest information. Exercise is an essential for a healthy brain, particularly aerobic exercise. The positive effects are many including at a molecular and behavioural level. Just 20 minutes of exercise can improve information processing and memory function. Exercise pumps more blood to the brain, it stimulates brain plasticity and has been associated with a drop in stress hormones and thus an antidepressant effect also. Get moving, fast or slow, land or water, at any age, at Hydrotherapy Brisbane. Keeping your brain healthy is another goal of the awareness week. You can go to http://brainfoundation.org.au/healthy-brain for a number of different online activities that can help keep your brain healthy and vital. See more

04.01.2022 Being fit involves a range of things including cardiovascular fitness, heart health, mental health, strength, core, co-ordination, balance and more. Our Wednesday Physio-fit class (with the average age of participant being 68.3 years) involves all of these. Today's balance and co-ordination component involved a bit of competition, a few elbows, a devious goal when the keeper was distracted and a lot of fun. They have all gone downstairs for a coffee now to plan their revenge for next week. Wednesday's Physio-fit (shallow pool) class is at 1pm. Bookings essential. Participants should enjoy a challenge!!

04.01.2022 The hip bone's connected to the back bone, The back bone's connected to the neck bone................... At Hydrotherapy Brisbane we look after your bones, and your joints, muscles, bursae, tendons, ligaments, nerves and much more. Dem bones, dem bones, dem bones!!!! (Apologies to American author and composer, James Weldon Johnson)

03.01.2022 Bench-pressing at the pool. Yep. It's a thing at Hydrotherapy Brisbane. When you have low tone and need upper limb and scapular strength and stability it can be just the thing. Also great when you need a break from holding that pesky head up!! It's an added bonus if you do it just right and can drip water on your own face. Skye is 3 in May and works hard at the pool. Bench Pressing is just one of the exercises she does!! GO SKYE!!!

03.01.2022 Keeping fit can be difficult when you have had an injury or just if you are getting a little bit older and walking is becoming more difficult, and road-running is a distant memory. Our Physio-Fit classes are designed for people of all ages. But are ideal if you are recovering from, or living with, an injury or chronic disease. We take deep water running and make it fun!!! Try aquatic fencing or sword-fighting!!!!.....while treading water at 1.8ms depth!!! Great for co-ordina...tion and fitness but low impact!!!! We have 3 deep water Physio-Fit classes each week, Monday at 12 midday, Monday at 5.30pm and Wednesday at 6pm. Bookings essential. Improve your health. Get fit. Water Works!!!! See more

03.01.2022 Today one of our lovely clients came up to the counter and asked us if we did gift vouchers. She has a friend who she thinks really needs hydrotherapy but feels she needs a bit of a push a little bit of encouragement. And so she thought she would help kick-start her on her road to better health by giving her a voucher for an initial consultation with one of our physios for Christmas. The spirit of Christmas is alive and well. What a thoughtful gift!!!! Whether you have arthritic knees, are awaiting hip surgery or recovering from it, need better balance, to get fit, lose weight, manage pain, get stronger, improve your posture, exercise to manage your diabetes or your back pain. We can help you at Hydrotherapy Brisbane. Dont wait for the New Year. Get started now.

03.01.2022 Yes we are still here.....and no we are not yet open for aquatic. We will keep you informed. We are working on all the safety issues....... including physical distancing. We had thought we could give every client a noodle to hold at arms length and create your safe place........but wearing your noodle seems so much better!!! (phew there is still a sense of humour deep inside...found it's way out tonight!!!)

02.01.2022 Our Wednesday 5pm Aqua-Mum's class has just finished!!! Happy ladies!!! If you missed it we have one on Friday at 9am also. Bookings essential!! Keep fit, manage weight, decrease swelling, manage back pain, reduce depression and help to prevent gestational diabetes. See you at Hydrotherapy Brisbane!!

02.01.2022 Can you dribble in the pool? Well, yes.. if youre a soccer player!!!! Jamie is 15 years old and has cerebral palsy. He had been independently walking but had a fall last year and lost his confidence and now needs a helping hand to walk. At Hydrotherapy Brisbane we are trying to improve his balance and return him to independent gait. The pool is a place to challenge balance, take a risk you might not take on land, dance again, play soccer or just walk without assistance to remind yourself how its done. Practising a couple of soccer skills is a bit of fun at the end of a tough aquatic physio session!!! The supportive effect of water, and the confidence that gives means Jamie does balance practice and actually enjoys it. And he needs no helping hand!!!! Keep up the good work Jamie!!!
