25.01.2022 Frosty morning cuddles at Tim Butt Racing

25.01.2022 Cute pic out of Tim Butt Racing Stables

25.01.2022 Research has shown that horses drink the most water when the water temperature is between 7 and 20 C. Optimum water consumption will keep the fibre in the horses digestive system hydrated, allowing it to be broken down efficiently by intestinal bacteria and to be pliable, and less likely to ball up and cause a blockage in the large intestine. The water requirement is higher if the horse is in training, nursing a foal, growing, or pregnant. http://www.hygain.com.au/feeding-horses-winter/

20.01.2022 Beet pulp is rich in fibre and is unique in its form as it is soluble fibre and highly digestible. Beet pulp is fermented in the large intestine of the horse similar to hay, pasture and chaff. However, since the fibre in beet pulp is soluble it is more readily digestible than pasture, hay or chaff. In fact, beet pulp provides digestible energy ranging between that of good quality hay and grains sourcing energy from soluble fibre as opposed to energy from starches and sugars. 18.01.2022 The lactating mare has the highest nutrient requirements of any horse on the farm. To produce milk and to repair the reproductive tract in preparation for future pregnancy, the mare requires substantial amounts of energy, protein, calcium and phosphorus. To maintain both adequate milk production and body condition, lactating mares will often need to be fed substantial amounts of grain and high quality forage. Without adequate energy (calorie) intake, mares will lose body weight and may have problems conceiving. The most common feeding mistake made with lactating mares is to underfeed them. Careful management is necessary in this class of mares because individual requirements will vary greatly. View the article at https://www.hygain.com.au/feeding-broodmare/

18.01.2022 Happy 10 year anniversary!!

17.01.2022 We are deeply saddened to hear that Rob Gaylard has passed away, and would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Gaylard family. Anyone who met Rob instantly felt like an old friend, as was the warmth and kindness of this man. With the smoothest tone, his race calling, commentating, speeches and stories were always enjoyable to listen to.... RIP Rob, you will be greatly missed.

16.01.2022 Certain fungi found on fresh pasture grasses, conserved roughage (hay, chaff, straw) and in grains can produce secondary compounds called mycotoxins. Several types of mycotoxins exist which may interact, especially under favourable environmental conditions, such as in warm and humid climates (as well as in improperly stored feeds). Mycotoxins may contaminate feeds or grains and are hard to detect due to their odourless, tasteless and invisible presence. The horses digestive ...system is sensitive to the effects of mycotoxins, as the gastric juices in the stomach cannot effectively deactivate the mycotoxins and these therefore enter the sensitive small intestine and hindgut. Once mycotoxins reach the hindgut they may affect the intestinal wall or enter the horses blood stream, which can result in respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological and reproductive issues. To assist in the removal of Mycotoxins check out Hygain Safeguard https://www.hygain.com.au/feeds/safeguard-eq/ See more

16.01.2022 When horses drink cold water during winter, their bodies must expend additional calories to warm their tissues back up from the heat loss that is incurred, so they instinctively drink less. This can cause problems when hard feeding or feeding hay, it is recommended to try to encourage your horse to drink more water. The water requirement is higher if the horse is in training, nursing a foal, growing or pregnant.

14.01.2022 Diet and exercise are closely linked to Tying up and the most important preventative strategies are based upon diet and exercise management. The classic case is the horse fed high grain and then given a day of rest, hence the name Monday morning disease. To find out more about ways to combat tying up check out https://www.hygain.com.au/tying-horses/

08.01.2022 The addition of chromium to performance horse diets has been shown to reduce the build up of lactic acid at the end of strenuous exercise or the closing stages of a race and to increase the horse’s ability to store glucose.

06.01.2022 Wow check out Tim Butt Racing Stables' new website

06.01.2022 The effect of nutrition and body condition on reproduction in mares has been clearly illustrated. Mares coming into the breeding season in optimal body condition start cycling earlier than mares with in poor body condition. Thinner mares also have difficulty conceiving and maintaining pregnancy as compared to mares in optimal body condition. Some obese mares continue to cycle throughout the winter when typically reproductive cycling is shut down. There are negative repercussi...ons for keeping mares in this condition. Obesity has been associated in horses and ponies with decreased insulin sensitivity, and both obesity and decreased insulin sensitivity have been associated with decreased reproductive function in mares. Mares in optimal body condition going into the breeding season typically do well on good quality forage and a concentrated vitamin and mineral pellet such as Hygain Balanced. If a mare is overweight prior to the breeding season a combination of feeding Balanced and exercise is an ideal program to get them into optimal shape before breeding. See more

02.01.2022 Let us help you assess your horses diet to make informed decisions on possible ways of ensuring you are meeting the daily nutritional requirements of your horse. To have your horses diet reviewed by our Nutritional Advisor visit https://www.hygain.com.au/nutrikey/ Remember feed is measured by weight, not volume and a dipper does not equal one kilogram, so you will require a set of kitchen scales on hand :)
