25.01.2022 Do you know all THREE notes in the chord of C? The Last Post only uses those three notes! Clap the rhythm first maybe, then see how the three notes are sometimes played an octave higher. Thought we'd support our local Glenorchy Anzac march this morning, it took exactly 1 minute 47 seconds to pass by. Next year I reckon they should include a steam roller or one of those chinese dragons so it lasts a bit longer.

24.01.2022 Happy Birthday this month Julie Andrews, where exactly was that poor lovesick Goatherd she sang about using various octave and minor 7 intervals?

24.01.2022 Huge CONGRATS!! to Caleb who received a High Distinction for his eighth grade piano exam. Caleb started back in our Junior classes before progressing through to individual lessons with Kathy. Caleb leaves us at the end of this year to undertake specialised jazz studies. We hope to have one of his student concert videos available soon.

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Nicholas and Thomas who both passed their recent AMEB exams. Both students learn at IAM Hobart with James Gath.

22.01.2022 Did you miss us this past week? We're back! With online lessons! We'll be in touch with all current students tomorrow. Wahooey!

22.01.2022 Because all these wonderful friendly teachers are qualified. Because they're all TMTA and SCSM registered. Because they're the only accredited licenced Encore academy in Tassie. Because they're the only place in Hobart offering Concert Exams for all instruments. THAT'S why I shop at IAM Hobart! 17 levels of classes, individual lessons in 8 instruments, enrol now for 2020, contact [email protected]

22.01.2022 Look what our Junior-2 piano student Diana and her dad whipped up on their 3D printer between weekly lessons! A working model of a 12000 year old Ocarina AND a prototype of the new IAM piano, set to strike fear in the hearts of Mr Steinway and his sons.

22.01.2022 Your invitation! Limited seating.

21.01.2022 Rosie has been discovering how to turn her by-ear compositions into music notation using Sibelius music software. Here she is balancing precariously on a footstool with her iPad taking a video of Lyndon showing how to add easier "MIcrowave Music" blues variations to her compositions. Just goes to show, you're never too old, or too short to start playing music, why not contact us to book your free demo lesson? (just don't tell WH&S)

21.01.2022 There I was at Cascade Brewery, just waiting for the rest of our methodist temperance picket line, and who should I see but Lewis our IAM drum teacher with his middle-eastern jazz (what??) trio. He suggested I have a paddle while waiting, and since the brewery is on a rivulet I thought why not?!

20.01.2022 Congratulations to Mr Lyndon's Friday class who've just graduated from Primary-2 to Achiever-1, where they'll discover how to play new keys, new chords, new pop songs, add their own new variations, and write their own new compositions. Achiever is such a high quality musicianship course, and it's fun! Enrolments for all classes next year are now open for anyone aged 2-102!

20.01.2022 Play guitar - tour the world!! Looking for a way to use his new "Microwave" guitar skills, Ken organised his first-ever carols soiree at a couple of local nursing homes and dragged Lyndon along for moral support. The residents insisted on an encore. Microwave Music is a quicker, easier way for adults to learn guitar and keyboard. Book your spot in our new class starting 6.15 Wednesdays? #iamhobart #musiclessons

20.01.2022 Concert time is coming very soon!! Want to know why we encourage everyone to participate in the concert? Check out the information below about what happens in our brains and the skills we develop when we prepare for a concert. We have heard that music education is good for our brains, but how? The answer is in the activities that are fundamental in reaching the goal of performing a piece of music on an instrument. In order to reach a stage where children can perform a piece ...in front of an audience, no matter how large or small, they have to master the following skills. 1. Control of their motor cortex that directs their bodily movements Getting the right note to come out of a musical instrument at the right time with the right sound is an incredible cognitive accomplishment. This is because the human brain needs to coordinate the motor, visual and auditory cortices to synchronise together to produce just one correct note. Imagine the coordination your childs brain is achieving after an entire piece or concert. 2. Control their emotional states and reactions Rehearsals can be frustrating experiences, mainly because bring a whole piece together is a slow and repetitious process. This is actually an act in learning how to learn slowly and sequentially while controlling our emotional responses when we might get bored or frustrated or want to be anywhere else. This control becomes immeasurably more complicated in a performance situation when you add adrenalin and excitement into the mix. Your child has a huge number of stimuli running around in their bodies while they are up on stage performing, and yet they have to keep their wits about them and keep their emotional responses contained in order to contribute their part to a successful performance. 3. Staying flexible and responding to unforeseen events Strange things happen in performance is a common mantra of any musical conductor as well as you have to be ready for anything. If the drumkit player is struggling to restrain his excitement and starts getting faster and faster, the rest of the band needs to get faster with him and adjust on the spot to the new tempo. If the cello section miscount for some reason and come in a bar early, the rest of the ensemble need to make a decision right away do we follow the cellos or look at the conductor and follow them? The ability to adjust our responses is incredibly difficult, because most of the time we just want to start the piece again. But in performance, that just cant happen and you child is responding in the moment to a given circumstance. Remember, this also all happens without a verbal instruction being spoken. These are only three of the cognitive activities that your child is managing right in front of your eyes during this concert. Inside their heads, their brains are working really hard to bring you a polished and seemingly flawless performance. You can read more at www.anitacollinsmusic.com

Weve had many people thank us for staying open but we understand there are pretty strong opinions to close or not to close on both sides, and we dont want to rehash those arguments, but thats our plan for now. 10.01.2022 IAM's Director, Lyndon Ellis was thrilled to be invited to be adjudicator last weekend at Launceston's Annual Performance Challenge. Covid restrictions meant an international adjudicator could not be flown in for the competition held at the Grand Chancellor over 3 days and 2 nights. Lyndon was asked to take on the role and was, of course, extremely happy to help out, especially given it was the special 25th milestone of the popular event. Lyndon assessed vocals, duets, ense...mble, plus over 12 different instruments including piano, strings, wind, and even a few bagpipes, some 600 students across all ages. This was a new role for Lyndon who was extremely impressed with the standard of musicianship, as was Competition Co-ordinator Michael Stocks. "There were some really high-quality performances. This event helps provide musicians with the ability to know how to perform under test conditions and for an audience." (The Examiner Newspaper 23/11/2020)
