19.01.2022 AUSTRALIA’S FIRST STAMP ARTWORK DISCOVERY A recent discovery has sparked enormous interest in stamp collecting circles after a Mandurah woman came forward with previously unrecorded artwork submitted for Australia’s first postage stamp. In 1911 a stamp design competition was held by the Postmaster-General, Josiah Thomas, inviting artists Australia wide to submit a design for consideration. The design had to include the words Australia and Postage and the denomination had ...to be in both figures and words.. In this instance, there were two designs submitted by Wattle Blossoms (nom-de-plume) however unfortunately the original artists real name is not known. I immediately realised the scarcity of the items and knew they would attract collectors interest worldwide. Both incorporate designs that were ultimately used in the winning design used on stamps first issued in 1913. These two miniature artworks will go to auction this weekend (7th and 8th October at the Cannington Exhibition Centre) with a conservative reserve of $7,000 that should attract enormous interest.
