24.01.2022 SHELF TALKERS (5) Alain de Botton, the famed philosopher and author, popped up on BBC World News the other day and, perhaps not surprisingly, was surrounded by a sea of books. As one might expect this is a heavyweight bookshelf in every respect. Sturdily built and groaning, in a very casual way, with a wide range of formats colours and content. The most obvious book on view is Fashion (DK). Aficionados of bookshelf arrangement will shudder at two aspects of this cultured shelf: the hotchpotch of horizontal books placed ON TOP of other books and the incursion of an A4 file (and a red one at that) an absolute no-no whatever your circumstances.

22.01.2022 SHELF TALKERS (4) Time to visit one of the most regal bookshelves in the world as HRH Prince Charles makes his first post-virus television appearance. The standout book here is a Dick Francis page-turner (on the centre shelf on the right) although we can’t quite make out the title! Is that a copy of Lord Hailsham’s Values, Collapse and Cures sitting next to it? This bookshelf oozes royalty with a top shelf of ivory jacketed hardbacks and a fair smattering of leather-bound tomes. The only discordant note being the photo on the lower shelf to the right.

21.01.2022 Sales of the 5 Year Journal have really taken off in the last few days. If you are looking for the ideal Christmas present, which suits everyone, simply visit our pop-up shop at Thornleigh Marketplace (slap bang outside Woolworths you can't miss us!) and say hello and grab your copy before they are gone!

21.01.2022 SHELF TALKERS (9) This is an outstanding example of a bookshelf arranged by colour... and doesn’t it look amazing! Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to group the yellows, reds etc and, most special of all, has managed to find six books with the same aqua coloured jackets! Does the owner acquire books for their content or their colour?

20.01.2022 thecalabrian.com has a very special Father's Day offering: free postage and free gift-wrapping!

19.01.2022 SHELF TALKERS (2) Over at Euronews books are also making frequent appearances as interview backdrops. On this occasion it is very difficult to make out ANY of the books in view over the left shoulder but we are working on it!

19.01.2022 SHELF TALKERS (8) Nice to see an empty bookcase on TV for a change! Most bookcases that we have seen today are crammed tight with books but this example (from Nairobi via Aljazeera) is the opposite. Some of the cubes are empty, some packed to capacity there is no obvious pattern. Even in this example, however, we see the most common feature in any bookcase the books are organised strictly by height.

11.01.2022 SHELF TALKERS (8) Asterix becomes the first children’s book to make a clear appearance in our worldwide search of tv backdrop bookcases. Canadian author Patrick De Witt also makes an appearance with his Brothers Sisters book. But look at those books on the windowsill! Four lonely books which are either in such high demand they need to be readily to hand or, perhaps, they are on their way out to the charity shop!

11.01.2022 SHELF TALKERS (6) Time to pay another visit to BBC World News and there are plenty of familiar books to be seen on this shelf! A History of Britain: (possibly Volume 3?) by Simon Schama (lower right) and Hugh Gaitskell: A Political Biography (top left) amongst them. And what a beautiful book case this is! We love those narrow shelves at the top which are the ideal place for stacking books on their side. The spacing of the shelves is just perfect the books are beautifully arranged by height. Shame about that photograph on the left.

09.01.2022 SHELF TALKERS (3) A wrestling segment about Wrestlemania on TV network ALJAZEERA is our next stop for shelf talkers. The reporter is from Newcastle in the UK and two books stand out; The Martian by Andy Weir is to the left on the top shelf and the ubiquitous Where to Eat Pizza by Daniel Young is handily placed, for no-doubt frequent access, on the lower shelf. In terms of shelf arrangement this is the first really neat bookcase we have seen. There is a series of around 15 books (cookbooks perhaps given their proximity to Pizza?) carefully arranged on the lower right shelf and the grouping of heights (top right) suggests a lot of thought has gone into positioning. However, for my liking, the bookcase is a little too cramped; I prefer to see some gaps to let books breathe.

09.01.2022 LOOK AT THAT! Well, well. 24 hours after Ice Cold published our Shelf talkers (4) item on Prince Charles' bookshelf the Australian Daily Mail is on the case! They have been able to identify the Dick Francis novel as Shattered and the Lord Hailsham book as 'The Door Wherein I Went' but strangely enough, none of the others! Nice to know that Ice Cold Publishing is reaching the place other publishers can't. Contact us now to find out how we can get your book published and talked about.

07.01.2022 REMOTE POSSIBILITIES In the current crisis, we are hearing a great deal about working from home and working remotely. It may well be that it becomes something we all do more post-virus. But book publishing is one of those industries which is extremely difficult to do remotely. There are so many different disciplines involved. So much inter-activity. Everything looks very different on screen to the printed version; how do you convey that the latest cover design isn’t q-u-i-t-e... right? In publishing, working and managing remotely is a very new skill which many people won’t have, or worse, have an aptitude for. Our publishing clients are spread out across the world so its something we have years of experience of doing well. We know that being available 24/7, phone manner, timely preparation and communicating concisely are just a few of the vital components of a ‘remote publisher’. So if in this difficult time, you need to find a publisher who is remote give us a call - we’ll be ready!
