As always, the health of our people and the community is a top priority. So we have implemented a few measures to keep everyone safe. We are encouraging anyone that visits reception to use the Check In CBR app to log their visit. It's also really important to maintain social distancing requirements, and as such only 3 people will be allowed into the foyer at one time. 23.01.2022 Sorry boy, you need to stay at home today We want everyone to be able to get out and enjoy the Googong Dam and Foreshores, especially during these beautiful Spring days. But, it’s important to remember that there are a few critters who aren’t allowed! Please be sure to keep your dogs and pets at home. The Googong Dam’s main function is to provide excellent quality drinking water for all of us. Keeping this precious source of drinking water safe means there are some things we can’t do around the Dam. 22.01.2022 It's finally starting to feel like summer The warmer weather means that your garden might need a bit of extra love. You can use a watering can or a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle to water your garden at any time. But, if you are watering with sprinklers or other irrigation systems remember to only use them after 6pm and before 9am These common sense rules are part of our permanent water conservation measures. By following a few simple measures we can help conserve water now and in the future. Find out more about the rules around water use in the ACT - www.iconwater.com.au/pwcm

22.01.2022 Following some heavy rainfall, the Bendora Dam is now officially full! Holding 11,400 million litres of water the dam has just started to spill for the first time since 2016. The excess water spilling over the top of the dam will be captured in the Cotter River and will make its way downstream to top up the Cotter Dam. Were excited that the winter rain has seen an improvement in Canberras dam levels, but its important that we continue to work together and use water wisely, so were ready for another hot and dry summer in the ACT. #careforwater

20.01.2022 Finally got around to building your dream bathroom or ensuite? Now, imagine how you would feel walking in to see that your toilet has backed up and overflowed all over your floor or worse seeped out the bathroom door into the next room... This is what can happen if you keep flushing wet wipes and disinfectant wipes down the loo. Flushing wet wipes can cause major blockages in your pipes and cost you hundreds of dollars to fix. ... Trust us, you do not want to see or smell what a bad blockage looks like! You will never look at your beautiful bathroom the same way Please remember bin it, dont flush it!
20.01.2022 Keep wipes out of pipes! If youve ever wondered whether those wet wipes youre flushing, break down once they enter the sewer, check out this really gross video for proof they dont, they even managed to clog the hydro vac. We have more than 3300km of sewerage pipes in Canberra. If the wrong things, like wet wipes go down the drain, they can cause blockages and even overflows which not only impact the community, but take our crews away from other necessary maintenance on the... network. Since the toilet paper shortage early on in the pandemic, were still seeing the aftermath from the community using wet wipes, with our crews clearing blockages like this in the treatment plant every day. Not only do wipes block the sewer network, but they can clog the pipes in your home, and create an expensive and smelly mess which is no fun for anyone. Thats why its so important to only flush the three Ps: Pee, Poo and (toilet) Paper.

17.01.2022 Lately we have seen a rise in instances of unmetered connections for building sites under construction. Backflow prevention devices (dual check valves) are incorporated into our 20&25mm water meters, protecting our drinking water network from potential cross-contamination. Please ensure that water meters are installed on your site before any extraction of water from our network. From 1 September 2020, any property found to have an unmetered connection will be deemed to hav...e an unlawful connection and may be subject to legal action and associated costs. To avoid this, please ensure you are familiar with the water meter installation requirements for plumbers and developers (https://rb.gy/rhpnle) and the small water meter installation guide for plumbers and developers (https://rb.gy/ykwzl7). If you require assistance please email us at [email protected] or call us on (02) 6248 3111

16.01.2022 POTENTIAL DISCOLOURED WATER IN OCONNOR: Residents in OConnor may experience discoloured water throughout this afternoon and evening due to pressure and flow testing throughout the network. Velocity increases in water flow can stir up small amounts of natural sediment in the pipes which should clear with normal use within 24 hours of the works being completed. If your water looks fine, continue on as normal. However, if you do see that it is discoloured, we dont recommend d...rinking or showering in it due to the difference in taste and aesthetics. We also suggest residents do not use washing machines as it can cause discolouration to clothing. While we will do everything we can to operate our network in a way which minimises disruption, we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused due to these works and thank the community for their patience. If you have any questions or concerns please contact our 24/7 faults and emergency hotline on 02 6248 3111 (option 3). You can also find more information on discoloured water on our website - iconwater.com.au/discolouration.

13.01.2022 We are saddened by the news of Stasia Dabrowski passing. Many of you would know Stasia from the tireless work she did running Canberras soup kitchen. We were really big fans of Stasia and everything she did for the Canberra community. Three years ago we named one of our trucks after her. Canberra is losing a local hero and she will be really missed. Our thoughts go out to her friends and family. https://the-riotact.com/farewell-to-a-canberra-icon-/399600
12.01.2022 Its flashback Friday! As Canberra was continuing to grow, future population projections showed that by the late 1970s the three existing dams on the Cotter River would not be able to cope with the increasing demand for water and their predictions were right. From 1968-1983 the Canberra population increased by over 100,000 people! This meant a new water source was required and after extensive research a site was selected on the Queanbeyan River. The construction of the Goo...gong Dam commenced along with the simultaneous construction of the Googong Water Treatment Plant. They were completed in 1978 and officially opened in 1979 by Prince Charles! The Googong Dam forms a major component of our water network, representing 43% of Canberras water supply storage capacity. It has a capacity to hold 119, 400 million litres of water. After the huge amount of rain over the last few weeks, Googong dam is now sitting at 78% capacity from 47% back in July! #history #iconwater100

01.01.2022 Its throwback Thursday! Did you know that construction of the sewerage system for Canberra began way back in 1913? Were not referring to the construction of Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre our current sewerage treatment plant, this is what came before that. In August 1913 a man named Thomas Hill, who was the Chief Engineer at the Department of Home Affairs, submitted plans for a sewerage system and sewerage farm. The plans featured a main outfall sewer extendi...ng five kilometres south-westerly to the western boundary and a sewerage farm to be established in Weston Creek both of which were at the time a suitable distance away from the city. In 1915 the plans were accepted by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works and in late 1915 the sewer works commenced, starting from the farm end of line into the city. Works were halted in 1917 due to a Royal Commission inquest and picked back up in 1922. In 1924 a treatment scheme was adopted by the committee that proposed to dispose of effluent into Weston Creek and then into the Molonglo river which would require treatment to the highest possible standard for that time. Construction of Canberras first sewerage treatment plant begun in 1925 once the essential sewerage system has been laid. The Weston Creek plant was completed in 1927.
