Don't get me wrong it is an important tool to gauge progress, but is limited in that it doesn't take into account fat loss versus muscle loss.The loss of weight due to a restricted calorie,low protein diet is often due to a rapid loss in muscle mass.The major problem is then twofold.Firstly ...muscle tissue is highly metabolically active,burning calories 24 hours a day 7 days a week so any loss of muscle tissue slows your metabolism.Secondly,when calorie consumption returns to normal levels,the body rapidly stores energy in the form of body fat.The end result can be a similar weight to when you started( or even more) and a significant increase in body fat to muscle ratio.This has been called the yo-yo diet and is often repeated many times over a frustrated individuals life leading to a life time of unsuccessful dieting.
