22.01.2022 IEEE NSW AP/MTT Joint Chapter Invited Talk Title: Simulations and Measurements of Aperture Array Verification System (AAVS2) for SKA-Low Date: 09 Apr 2021... Time: 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM Face-to-Face: UTS, building 11 (RSVP: [email protected]) Zoom details: Meeting ID: 811 4320 0840 Register at: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/267714 Abstract: Square Kilometre Array is an international project to build the largest and the most sensitive radio telescope that has ever existed. Its low frequency component, SKA-Low, will operate in the frequency range 50-350 MHz and will be located in Western Australia at Murchison Radio Astronomy Observatory. The construction of the SKA-Low that will stretch to 65 km to accommodate 130,000 antennas has begun in 2021. In preparation to the construction of such an engineering beast, a few versions of Aperture Array Verification Systems (AAVS) have been deployed and tested. AAVS version 2 (AAVS2) is a prototype of only one of the required 512 stations of the spiral-shaped SKA-Low array. AAVS2 consists of 256 dual-polarized log-periodic antennas distributed semi-randomly on a wire-mesh ground. Accurate simulated performance of the antennas with low-noise amplifiers is crucial for calibration and sensitivity calculations. This presentation starts from some background information about aperture arrays in radio astronomy and continues with the latest advances in engineering development of SKA-Low. Speaker: Dr Maria Kovaleva Maria Kovaleva received the B.S. degree (Hons.) in electrical engineering from the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics, Moscow, Russia, in 2011, and the Ph.D. degree in electronics engineering from Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW, Australia, in 2019. She was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Centre for Collaboration in Electromagnetic and Antenna Engineering (C4CELANE), Macquarie University, and also an External Lecturer in antennas and propagation with the University of Sydney, from 2018 to 2019. From 2011 to 2014, she was an Antenna Design Engineer with JSC NIIKP (Russian Space Systems), Moscow, Russia. She is currently an Associate Lecturer with the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA), Curtin University, Perth, WA, Australia, where she is working for the Square Kilometre Array.
