25.01.2022 Here’s 5 reasons why we should be building a hydrogen industry here in Wollongong. 1. Hydrogen can store renewable energy 2. That means we can become a green energy exporter (instead of a coal exporter!) 3. It can be used to replace coal in steel making... 4. It can power planes, trucks and cars 5. It can be made using recycled waste water These are the jobs of the future and we want them here in Wollongong!

24.01.2022 The latest Australian Household Wealth Inequality report shows that the current system is not working. 60% of Australians own just 16% of the total wealth, whilst the wealthiest 10% own about half of everything. Vote for the Greens to reverse Scomo's tax cut for the wealthy and join us to fight for a fairer Australia https://greens.org.au/greennewdeal

16.01.2022 Australia has some of the worlds most generous tax laws which make it easy for companies pay no tax In Australia deductions and losses can be held over indefinitely in balance sheets allowing companies to spend up and take risks at the cost to the publics tax revenue. By avoiding tax they essentially contribute nothing to society but rather use our public infrastructure and tax payer funded social institutions in which to operate successful in. Consider Woodside that exploit our natural resources and once again paid no tax on their profits. Yet they managed to make large political donations We need new political leadership to tackle these issues and make it fairer for all.

15.01.2022 explosive revelations !! How will the Catholic church explain this failure of their own members and morally corrupt practice? "Stealing from the poor to give to the rich is disgraceful but it looks like core business practice." David Shoebridge

14.01.2022 With support from our members, Illawarra Greens councillor Cath Blakey is pushing for real action on pollution in local waterways Last night Cllr. Blakey's motion was successful asking for Wollongong Council to write to the Environment minister and State Treasurer for answers. Why has there been so little action on the recent South 32 coal mines dam failure which has polluted local creeks with mining waste? The council will also write to the State Treasurer asking if the... E.P.A is properly funded. Currently it seems they rely on South 32 to self report and make their own Environmental Impact Statements rather than actually doing their own. Can we rely on a coal mining company with previous breaches to self police themselves? The deadline for the report was yesterday and we are not aware of it being delivered. "We need an EPA with teeth... only small fines of around15k have been handed out in the past. This is nothing for these companies, or motivation to change their behaviour." said Cath Blakey, Greens See more

14.01.2022 Yesterday, the shark netting season began at 51 NSW beaches south of Newcastle. In the Illawarra we have shark nets at Watamolla, Garie, Coledale, Austinmer, Thirroul, North Wollongong and South Wollongong beaches. The government's own data revealed that last year shark nets in the Illawarra caught 1 critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle, 3 green turtles, 2 loggerhead turtles, 1 dolphin and 75 non-target sharks and rays. 94% of the catch were non-target species and most ...did not survive. Researchers from UOW recently disputed the government shark net program which pitted marine environments against human safety. They found shark nets to be ineffective and destructive and other measures such as investing in lifeguard patrols and emergency response to be more effective at protecting human life. The Illawarra Greens support an end to their barbaric treatment of our marine life and are calling on the NSW Government to remove shark nets from Illawarra Beaches! For more info on the UoW research: https://www.uow.edu.au//shark-nets-destructive-and-ineffec Stingray picture supplied by Sea Shepherd Australia.

07.01.2022 As activists for climate action the way we communicate our demands for action is arguably as essential as the science behind it. How to talk about climate change in a way that makes a difference by social researcher Rebecca Huntely is reviewed by Illawarra Greens member Stephen Young http://newbushtelegraph.org.au/?p=1168 How do you talk climate change ?? ... Huntley’s central proposition is that communication about climate change must take into account the human characteristics of emotion, imagination, and loyalty to tribe. To make a difference, we need to understand the range of emotions people react with when presented with the science of climate change. - Stephen Young Article from independent online news publisher New Bush Telegraph.

06.01.2022 Did you know that the number of deaths in NSW attributed to car pollution is 60% higher than the road toll? There are so many other benefits to more people using public transport. less traffic congestion less costs through wear and tear on your car... economic benefits to the community employment to workers better services for non-drivers like children to school you can be productive on a bus or train. cleaner air Would you support reducing Wollongong's public transport fees to $1 ? We estimate that "$1 fares for everyone" would be largely offset by increased patronage on the public transport system and by relocating funds from the state's roads budget and lower costs to the health system.
