Accessory muscles of respiration including the SCM, Scalenes and Omohyoid musculature become facilitated. The scalenes contribute by pulling the clavicle and first rib upward and can become most commonly facilitated and go into a splinting mode reducing the cervical curve further not un-like a cervical trauma or whiplash. A general rule for pain referral in the neck is that anterior and lateral structures (scalenes) can tend to refer their pain pattern posteriorly. Headache is another symptom, which often accompanies a reduced cervical lordotic curve. Somewhere between C2-3 and the cervico-cranial junction, the brain begins to apply the brakes by neurologically contracting the sub-occipitals and other capital extensors in an effort to pull the head back up on the neck to level the eyes. Altered length-tension imbalance patterns typically result from faulty posture, gravitational stress, repetitive movement, cumulative trauma and loss of neuromuscular control. Exercise programs designed to improve appearance without addressing postural changes will be limited in aesthetic benefits.
