24.01.2022 Dani Beth has bravely shared her story of losing her 12-year-old daughter Kaela Beth to pneumococcal meningitis, at a time when the pneumococcal vaccine was not yet available. Thank you Dani for sharing your tragic story https://youtu.be/G2zO0XGLUAI

23.01.2022 We are so proud to know the beautiful DeLuis family who are making great efforts to save little lives from #influenza after their daughter Lucy passed away last year. Influenza is the most common vaccine preventable disease and young babies are at high risk of a severe infection. Influenza vaccinations are currently licensed for babies six months or older, leaving young babies unprotected when they are most vulnerable. This important research could mean that one day, we can p...rovide life-saving flu vaccinations to babies under 6 months of age, keeping them healthy and out of hospital! We are big believers in the importance of research, and know that medical research can change and save lives! So if you are in in #Perth, #pregnant and/or have a baby under 8 weeks of age, we encourage you to find out more about this important study and consider signing up: https://infectiousdiseases.telethonkids.org.au//cu/flubub/ Lovely to see baby Ollie (Lucy's little brother) take part in the study https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=663208711247809

21.01.2022 HPV VACCINE SAFETY If you or your child is due for an HPV vaccine soon, here is the latest Australian safety data. For those who have any concerns about this vaccine, this data shows us that it is safe and well-tolerated, with only minor side effects. Of the 63 000+ parents/carers who participated in providing data:... 91.2% reported no adverse events after immunisation. Of those who did report an adverse event, the most common were: Injection site pain Injection site swelling / redness Tiredness Headache Fever Irritability Sleep pattern change These symptoms are generally mild and short-lived. Why is the HPV vaccine important? Having the HPV vaccine means you're far less likely to have genital warts, certain types of cancer or other illnesses caused by HPV in the future. The vaccine helps to protect against cervical cancer and some less common cancers, such as penile, vaginal, vulval and throat cancers caused by HPV. (This data was last updated 18/09/2020 and comes from AusVaxSafety, a world-leading national vaccine safety system, led by the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) and funded by the Australian Government Department of Health).

21.01.2022 This is an excellent point raised in this article about potential mandates for a COVID vaccine: "Mandates might only enter the picture if uptake is not sufficiently high. On this basis, vaccine refusers would be wise to stop spreading fear about the COVID-19 vaccination in the community. They will be relying on the rest of us to get vaccinated if they do not wish to have it themselves"

19.01.2022 Thank you to Nail Snail for your support of our Light for Riley project. $1 from each Jacaranda Purple Nail Snail goes towards our Light for Riley project, where we are determined to shine a light on the dangers of whooping cough & the importance of pregnancy vaccination.

19.01.2022 Wow - it's clear that increased hygiene, social distancing measures and lockdowns have had a BIG impact on a range of infectious diseases... not just COVID-19! Scroll through the images to see how the numbers of measles, whooping cough, influenza, pneumococcal and meningococcal cases have fallen in 2020 compared to similar time-periods in previous years. Quite a contrast!

18.01.2022 It's so important that research & interventions in the area of vaccine hesitancy are funded appropriately by the government in preparation for the rollout of a safe + effective COVID vaccine.

17.01.2022 Assuming a safe and effective vaccine is found, who do you think should be able to access the COVID-19 vaccine first? Healthcare workers? Elderly (how would you define elderly?) Aged care workers?... People who are medically at risk? Teachers? Aboriginal communities? Childcare workers? People who live in areas with severe outbreaks? Children? Politicians? Those who work in industries with frequent contact with public (eg retail & hospitality), or work very close to each other (Eg manufacturing)? Pregnant women? OR do you think it should be first come, first serve? We would love to know your thoughts so we can share them with those making these decisions!

16.01.2022 Some interesting insights from a very recent Ipsos poll: 88% of Australians would have a COVID-19 vaccine if it was available - higher than the global average of 74% 59% of Australians STRONGLY agree that they would have a COVID-19 vaccine (only Brazil scored higher here!)... Of those Australians who are not keen to have a COVID-19 vaccine, the most frequent reason was due to worry about side-effects. Link to the report in the comments!

13.01.2022 This is pretty standard - if there's an unexplained illness in a trial, the whole thing will be paused while the illness/reaction is investigated. On a positive note, this is a perfect example of vaccine safety being taken very, very seriously, and it's great to see this highlighted in the media so transparently. Understanding the safety of a COVID-19 vaccine is of incredible importance to all of us.

08.01.2022 Coronavax Opportunity If you live in Perth & are keen to have your voice heard by researchers & government regarding the coronavirus vaccine, please consider participating in the Coronavax project! 05.01.2022 WHO WE ARE The Immunisation Foundation of Australia was established by the family of Riley Hughes, who have become vocal advocates of immunisation after the death of their son from whooping cough in 2015. Believing in the importance of parents and community-members standing up to support immunisation, the foundation’s mission is to inspire further community-based immunisation advocacy, helping to protect babies and families from vaccine-preventable diseases. OUR VISION... The Immunisation Foundation of Australia envisions a world where families are no longer affected by the unnecessary suffering and death caused by vaccine-preventable diseases. To help make this vision a reality, we are committed to creating a network of community-based immunisation champions, who share our common values of respect, integrity and evidence-based advocacy. WHAT DO WE DO? Our core activities currently include: Fighting against anti-vaccine misinformation via informative and evidence-based social media campaigns Working with Australian childcare centres to promote immunisation via our "Superheroes Vaccinate" campaign The distribution of 'Riley's story' flyers to pregnant parents and our "Beat the Bugs" books to children Raising funds for the distribution of flu vaccines for homeless Australians Running our "Light for Riley" campaign, raising awareness about the dangers of whooping cough and the importance of pregnancy vaccination Presentations to schools, universities, conferences & Rotary Clubs Raising awareness about childhood influenza immunisation via our Lucy DeLuis Memorial Award Coordinating pop-up immunisation clinics and education stands at Pregnancy, Babies & Children’s Expos around Australia (on hold during the pandemic!) Providing consumer representation on a range of national immunisation and infectious disease research projects Referring parents who are worried about vaccines to evidence-based resources, support and services. COVID-19 is a challenging time for all, yet it's as vital as ever for us to champion the merits of immunisation. If you would like to support us, you can do so via our website: https://www.ifa.org.au/donate-1 All donations over $2 are tax-deductible. Thank you to all who stand with us & support immunisation

05.01.2022 Who's at risk for #Mumps ? Mumps is a highly contagious disease, spread through contact with an infected person. Symptoms including fever and swelling of the face. Mumps can affect people of all ages but can be prevented with vaccination. Mumps has no treatment most people get better on their own.

02.01.2022 When making a decision about immunisation, it's good to look at the risks of the diseases vs the risks of the vaccine. This week, we're weighing up the effects of #mumps against the effects of the MMR vaccine. Of course, these risks outlined in our graphic have already been taken into consideration in the design of the National Immunisation Program, in which the MMR vaccine is very clearly recommended.... According to the Australian Department of Health, symptoms of mumps include: Fever Swelling of the face Headache Fatigue Aches and pains Loss of appetite Painful chewing or swallowing. #DiseaseVsVaccine #VaccinesWork

01.01.2022 There's no debate... #VaccinesSaveLives
