20.01.2022 We have been FIT Testing for Matt Daly Plumbing for their protection against airborne contaminants whilst working. An important aspect to the control of risks associated with airborne contaminants across varying industry sectors, such as Health, Construction, and Government, is the selection, provision and Fit-Testing of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE), including the training of workers in the correct use, cleaning and maintenance of such equipment. There are a number ...of important factors to consider when selecting RPE, including: * The contaminant/s workers may be exposed to (i.e. nature, toxicity, form and concentration) *The tasks that workers perform (i.e. frequency and length of use, work environment, mobility) *The characteristics of the worker (i.e. physiological considerations, facial features) *Any limitations of the RPE supplied (i.e. vision, communication, mobility) *Any medical conditions of workers that may impact the RPE effectiveness Each of these factors are mutually inclusive and, as such, each must be given due consideration to ensure effective respiratory protection. #silicasafety #incasafety #airbornecontaminants #rpe #fittesting #worksafeaustralia

17.01.2022 What causes Silicosis? Exposure to dust, not the dust you can see, its the dust you cant see that is the problem. The dust you can see in the picture below isnt the problem, for most, our nasal and bronchial tubes will filter this dust from entering the lungs, the particles smaller, less than 5 microns (the eye cant see this size) are the dust particles that the human bronchial and nasal system cannot filter out. This enters and is retained in the lungs causing legions. These legions overtime can turn cancerous.

17.01.2022 CRYSTALLINE SILICA DUST Estimates show that over 230 lung cancer cases in Australia each year are caused by exposure to silica dust in the workplace. Around 600,000 Australian workers each year are exposed to silica dust at work, including miners, construction workers, farmers, engineers, bricklayers and road construction workers, as well as those working in demolition. Exposure to silica dust can be minimised and the risk of contracting cancer can be significantly reduced ...through the use of dust prevention or control, adequate ventilation and personal respiratory protection. The approach to working safely with products that contain silica rests with both employers and employees. Employers have a legal responsibility under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (section 19) to provide a safe place to work. Those working with products that contain silica should be aware of the risks and ensure that they are not put into situations where they may be exposed to dust without appropriate protection and the provision of information, training, instruction or supervision that is necessary to protect all persons from the risk to their health and safety arising from work carried out as part of the conduct of the business or undertaking. I can help you with the following questions with Silica Safety Training. WHAT IS SILICA DUST? HOW DOES SILICA GET INTO LUNG? WHAT DISEASES DOES EXPOSURE TO CRYSTALLINE SILICA CAUSE? WHAT IS INVOLVED IN HEALTH MONITORING? WHAT ARE THE TYPICAL EXPOSURE STANDARDS WHO IS AT RISK? HOW DO I MANAGE THE HAZARD? HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF? See more

13.01.2022 The third stage of Workplace Health and Safety Queenslands respirable crystalline silica dust compliance audits is underway, with inspectors to audit all identified stone benchtop fabricators operating in Queensland. The audits continue efforts to manage the serious health risks faced by stone benchtop industry workers, and forms part of an ongoing series of compliance activities in this industry. Inspectors will assess individual workplace compliance with the Managing respi...rable crystalline silica dust exposure in the stone benchtop industry Code of Practice 2019, which came into force on 31 October 2019. Findings from this campaign will inform future compliance action and interventions by WHSQ, as a whole or in targeted areas of the industry. The level of compliance required in the code is more stringent than in previous guidelines. To assist, WHSQ has provided all identified stone benchtop fabricators with information and resources clarifying what compliance with the code looks like and how to prepare for the audits. Under the code, and in addition to ensuring suitable controls are in place to prevent workers exposure to respirable crystalline silica, PCBUs must engage an occupational hygienist to undertake air monitoring at least once every six months for the first two years (from the commencement of the COP or commencement of the business). This means all PCBUs operating since 31 October 2019 need to have undertaken air monitoring prior to 30 April 2020, and a second round of air monitoring by 31 October 2020. PCBUs also need to ensure all stone benchtop fabrication and installation workers have annual health checks and ongoing health monitoring. We offer Silica Safety Awareness training online for $45 which has been written under the Safe Work Australia guidelines to cover the entire Nation. To register for this please either email or call us with your details.

12.01.2022 Compliance risk management is important because if workers arent complying with WHS guidelines, incidents will continue to happen regularly despite having a proper plan in place, making it redundant. We appreciate the reviews we receive for providing Safety Compliance to our valued clients. #SafetyCompliance #incasafety #constructionaustralia #whsqueensland

12.01.2022 Wed like to express our gratitude to @AussieDailyOfficial Community for this video. 11.01.2022 Fake disposable respiratory protective equipment The COVID-19 pandemic has increased demand for half face disposable respirators. As a result, some industries have had difficulty getting disposable respirators used for protection against dusts and chemicals including silica, asbestos and lead.... This extra demand is leading to fake respiratory protective equipment (RPE) entering the Australian market. In Australia, most disposable respirators and filters that give protection against dusts and other particles are classified and marked as P1, P2 or P3, in accordance with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1716:2012. There are also international standards for the classification of these respirators, with the United States N95, European FFP2 and Chinese KN95 considered equivalent to the Australian P2 and acceptable in Australian workplaces. If you have any issues, please contact me. We are an Australian Safety Company - Inca Safety, and we are qualified FIT Testers under the Australia Standards. We supply and fit only 3M respiratory equipment.

07.01.2022 On 11 June 2020, in the Brisbane District Court, Australias first conviction and sentence for industrial manslaughter was handed down. The defendant, Brisbane Auto Recycling Pty Ltd, had on 3 April 2020 entered a guilty plea to one offence contrary to s34C of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 ("the Act"). The conviction related to an incident in May 2019 at a wrecking yard in Rocklea, Brisbane, in which a worker suffered fatal injuries when a forklift was reversed, crushin...g him between the forklift and a stationary tilt-tray truck. The investigation into the incident by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) and Queensland Police revealed that the business had no documented safety systems and that the driver of the forklift was unlicensed. Guilty pleas were also entered by the companys two directors to Category 1 charges of reckless conduct under s.31 of the Act. Each failed in their duty to exercise due diligence to ensure the corporate defendant complied with its safety obligations under the Act. Brisbane Auto Recycling Pty Ltd was convicted and fined $3M. The directors were each convicted and sentenced to 10 months imprisonment, wholly suspended for 20 months. In sentencing, His Honour Judge Rafter SC held that the moral culpability of each defendant was high. "The defendants knew of the potential consequences of the risk, which were catastrophic. Steps to lessen, minimize or remove the risk posed by mobile plant were available. Those steps were neither complex nor overly burdensome," Judge Rafter said. Work Health and Safety Prosecutor, Mr Aaron Guilfoyle, commended the investigation by WHSQ investigators. "The investigation into this matter by WHSQ was thorough and prompt. The efforts of the WHSQ lead investigator, working alongside the OWHSP Principal Prosecutor, has seen the defendants in this matter brought to justice," Mr Guilfoyle said. Mr Guilfoyle also noted that the substantial penalties imposed reflected both the very serious nature of the offending and the need to protect workers and others from workplace injuries and fatalities. "This offending of the defendant company was of the most serious nature and resulted in the tragic loss of life. The conduct of the directors and their company fell well short of the standard required and rightly expected in modern Queensland workplaces," Mr Guilfoyle said. "Over an extended period, the directors knew that their workers were at risk of serious injury or death, and consciously disregarded that risk. "The result in this matter should send a clear message that businesses and officers who fail to comply with their duties under the Act and put their workers at risk face a very real risk of substantial monetary penalties and sentences of imprisonment."

01.01.2022 Brisbane contractor fined $85,000 for not protecting workers against electric shock A recent hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court revealed a concrete worker on the top level of the site used a tool which touched an overhead powerline. He received an electric shock, causing serious injuries including the amputation of five toes, burns to both hands and brain damage including memory loss. In sentencing, Magistrate Robbie Davies indicated the defendant had attempted to make... the site electrically safe through an enquiry prior to construction and using marker flags. However, his Honour deemed the defendant company had not done anything further or made a risk assessment of the powerlines as construction progressed and the height of the building was at the same level as the electricity lines. Magistrate Davies deemed the defendant had responsibility for the site and its conduct ultimately led to a risk of death and serious injury. His Honour indicated it was relevant the defendant company was aware of the high voltage powerline, including the risk it posed, but didnt implement a proper barrier. He accepted the measures could have been easily implemented and the tragic incident avoided. The construction company was fined $85,000, plus court costs of almost $1,600.
