24.01.2022 DIY FACE SHIELDS: BACKYARD INGENUITY PRODUCES POTENTIALLY LIFE SAVING PPE HACK Stratford 3D printing expert Stuart Webster has joined a growing league of small... business and garage operators making bootleg versions of Personal Protective Equipment or PPE. Stuart has been printing around 100-120 plastic Last Resort Biohazard Face Shields per day, across half a dozen 3D printers at his home, which are being distributed to front line health, emergency service and aged care workers across Gippsland and beyond. With gin distilleries making hand sanitiser and dress makers making DIY face masks to help meet the shortfall of available PPE products, Stuart was inspired to make the DIY face shields after discovering an open source design on the internet. After discussing the idea with a local doctor, Stuart investigated around 30 designs online, before deciding on the most reliable and cost effective model which had been successfully field tested during the Ebola crisis in Africa. The one piece, slotted plastic headband can be fitted with any A4 sheet of plastic, can be easily sent via post and costs around $1.80 to make per unit. Stuart is now selling the face shields for the affordable price of $5 each, which is considerably less than some of the medical suppliers who have been price gouging up to to 10 times as much for similar face shield products. Being DIY bootlegs, Stuarts shields have not been safety tested or certified as medical grade by any consumer authority, which is why they need to be described with the disclaimer being last resort face shields. But in a situation where PPE options are not readily available, the well designed, comfortable units are an effective DIY alternative for protecting workers and patients from COVID-19 transmission through the mouth, nose or eyes. So far, Stuart has sold his Last Resort Bio Hazard Face Shields, to aged care facilities, police, doctors and ambulance workers. But the shields are convenient and light weight enough to be used in a variety of general close contact situations, where people are at risk of droplet transmission. Stuart has also produced an adaptive device that enables hospitals to run four simultaneous patient ventilator hoses of the one ventilator machine, essentially making one machine available to four patients. Who would have thought a bedroom manufacturing operation of 3D plastic printers, could produce so many potentially lifesaving components!
