19.01.2022 A very proud moment for Indigicate. Shawn Andrews had a vision of bringing young Indigenous people to an international conference in Europe. Today the vision is now reality. 7 participants are here from Indigicate and 6 from Scotch College. Both are here as a result Shawn's first visit more than 8 years ago. Super exciting and proud moment for our team.

18.01.2022 This years theme for Reconciliation Australia is 'Grounded in Truth Walk Together with Courage'. At Indigicate we are focused on changing the narrative of 'Australian history'. We ask all non-Indigenous people in Australia to be courageous, as the narrative change will be confronting. *Before reading further read the article in the picture The information below provided in a historical tour of the Charters Towers Cemetery. It tells a story of brave Scotsman who befriended Ab...original peoples. "King" Kiara Christison 'greatest' is the name on the gravesite, yet the story is not about him. It is about a 'great' white man named Robert Christison whos greatest achievement is his co-existence with aboriginal people. Now, the first part of this narrative that needs to change is the lack of capital 'A' in aboriginal. Then we should ask the question of why it is more important to write about a white man when it is an Aboriginal man's gravesite. The passiveness about capturing a young Aboriginal boy is disturbing. It should say kidnapped. The brass plates they speak of are known as dog tags or slave tags to Aboriginal people. Often given to the wrong leaders and not given to elders. This is pointed out when the article references the kidnapped boy's son as 'King'. How could the son of a stolen boy be an elder or leader? They were disconnected from the community. Often given to the wrong leaders and not given to elders. This is pointed out when the article references the kidnapped boy Kiara as a King and his son as 'King'. How could either be an elder or leader? They were disconnected from the community. We question the truth of this article. It is written as so many articles modern articles are, with a narrative of romanticised Australian history. The reality is far grimmer and is most likely one of stolen land, force removal, slavery, massacres, and torture. Reconciliation will not happen if we are not truthful. Sovereignty was never ceded and its articles like the one below that create a sense of ease around the narrative of how the many Aboriginal Australians were/are treated. See more

11.01.2022 Talofa Lava, Jingeri, G’day from Samoa. Today we launch our Joon-Gai program. A program that uses Indigenous methods of connection to teach young people how to connect and work with Indigenous communities. Joon-gai means deep spiritual connection and we use Joon-gai as the foundation of our Indigenous to Indigenous business model that creates partnerships between school children and Indigenous peoples. The program was created with a vision of developing opportunities for cult...ural exchange experiences that are designed and facilitated by Indigenous Australians. Indigicate managing director Shawn Andrews said ‘I was disheartened by the continuous use of a paternalistic approach towards working with Indigenous peoples, the desire to help people who are less fortunate is often driven by the need to save them and make them more western. This approach disregards their cultural identity and devalues their culture. It damages communities and I believe that we need to work from our cultural frameworks to create opportunities to help communities on a needs basis. It makes sense to utilise Indigenous expertise when creating partnerships with Indigenous communities. We understand the challenges of living in a western context and when we work together we can create pathways for sustainable long term partnerships’. Today Indigicate’s Joon-Gai director Tanu Nu’u and managing director Shawn Andrews witnessed the signing of principal to principal memorandum of understanding. The MOU is between Indigicate partner school Donvale Christian College Executive Principal Tim Argall and Moata’a Primary School Principal Vailili Tito and is a commitment to support Indigicate to design and develop the Joon-Gai Samoa program for both schools. Tomorrow, 20 year eleven students arrive in Samoa for the first Indigicate Joon-Gai program. Over the next 12 months Indigicate will pilot programs across Australia and Samoa. #indigicate #samoa #indigenous #education

07.01.2022 Our Indigenous young people are beautiful, strong and kind. When we enable them to grow in safe environments they shine and show us the true meaning of strength. Today Sarah sang in front of a crowd. We are immensely proud of her and thankful for what our participants have taught us. We come here for them to learn and as always they taught us more than we taught them. #indigicateleadershipprograms #indigicate #indigenous #kindness @sarah_jane_kennedy
