21.01.2022 The lack of any arguments is NOT the key to a successful relationship! Dr Gottman found that 'repair' is the key to long lasting, strong and healthy relationships. Check out this short video of his lecture. There is also a brief questionnaire to check how well you practice 'repair'

20.01.2022 "Sorry, but..." is commonly said but is not really an apology. There is a few simple steps to saying to someone and showing them that we are truly sorry.

18.01.2022 I was thinking about 'the terrible twos' recently, often related to increased tantrums and challenging behaviours in children. It is interesting that the emotional development of toddlers are not generally talked about. Just like their other areas of development, children this age is trying to make sense of their feelings and sometimes still struggle. Understanding and supporting them to do this while modelling how we regulate our emotions can go a long way into not only helping them to grow but to also reduce behavioural problems.

17.01.2022 Violence is never OK in a relationship! Many people in a domestic violence relationship do feel trapped and confused. We may also be witnessing DV but unsure about what to do. Check out this page to understand the signs better and know how to take action for yourself or find help for others.

13.01.2022 Teaching our kids how to lose (gracefully). There are many strategies written on how to win. Plenty of paid (and very expensive) educational, vocational programs are promoted to help people win or gain advantage over others in this competitive world. Losing is rarely mentioned. In any competitions, there will be more losers than winners and losing is very much a common fact of life. Yet, we dislike it so much that we avoid talking about it.... Parents play a major role in their children's lives to help them survive, adapt and become well adjusted members of societies. Of course, we help them to win and stay ahead in life. Teaching them how to face and accept failures and losses is also an important part of parenting. It is unavoidable and no parent can shield their children from this. Here are some of the lessons we've learnt as parents on how to do this: Let them fall. This is the simplest lesson of all, don't pick them up when they fall and don't rescue them, act normal. Obviously, don't let them be in danger and soothe them when they are upset. Play board games or other competitive games and teach them how to play it well. Don't let them win all the time. If they cry or complain, be normal about it and teach them that winning and losing is part of playing a game. Ask them to play again when they are ready. But, don't be cruel about it, don't mock, don't deliberately make them lose all the time. You are showing them how winners and losers should behave, being cruel will just teach them to treat others badly when they win. Let them clean after their mistakes. When they spill things in the house, teach them to clean and take responsibility of what they have done. Help them and do it together but don't let them get away with it.

11.01.2022 Wisdom for parents

10.01.2022 Have you heard of the 'Three Good Things' exercise? Also called the 'Three Blessings Exercise.' This is a Positive Psychology technique shown to help us to increase our overall happiness and refocus our attention to the 'good things' rather than the 'bad things' a lot of us tend to focus our attention on. It goes like this... "Every night for the next week, right before you go to bed, write down three things that went really well today. These things can be small and ordinary in importance. Think about why this good thing happened." Give it a go and see what happens!

09.01.2022 'Thank you' is a very simple way to show gratitude towards others. Although simple, gratitude has been shown to show many benefits including: improving physical and emotional health, increasing resilience and social connection. There is truth in the age-old teachings of our parents to say 'thank you.' Check out this article that has 31 gratitude exercises that can boost your happiness.

08.01.2022 Having a job or vocation gives us meaning and purpose. How we go about 'doing work' can determine whether or not we achieve our goals. These useful strategies can help us maintain our wellbeing in our roles.

05.01.2022 I am from Indonesia and saddened by the recent church bombings in Surabaya. These incidents can sometimes cause children to become distressed. Some may experience changes in their emotions and behaviours, even if they weren't directly affected. Hearing about threatening incidents can cause an impact. There are useful ways that parents or loved ones can follow if they notice these in their child or teens in the following website. They also have useful information for adults who may be affected.

05.01.2022 Ruminating on the past or negative experiences have been shown to lead to depression. Ongoing negative thoughts can often lead people in a cycle of being 'stuck.' There are several ways to overcome the cycle of rumination: 1. Take the initial and small steps to problem solve our issues 2. Use meditation or prayer to distract ourselves from negativity 3. Reevaluate our negative beliefs and unrealistic expectations of others

04.01.2022 A good friend of mine said that 'Psychologists aren't needed in this world.' I replied: 'I can't wait for that time to come, maybe I'll become an engineer instead.' (which was another interesting profession I realised later in life). It is certainly encouraging when people experiencing low mood, anxiety or other symptoms can reach out and seek help and support from their family, loved ones or community groups. However, studies have shown that there are significant barriers t...o help seeking which include concerns about confidentiality and privacy, embarrassment, misunderstanding and lack of knowledge of mental health and preference for self reliance. Sometimes people are just 'a little bit more stuck' than usual and need some extra help. Psychologists are useful in a way that they know much about mental health and are bound to maintain privacy and confidentiality. They can also educate and help families to support their loved ones so that no further professional help is needed.

03.01.2022 Following recent political news from overseas lead me to see a common issue that many politicians and businesses face these days. Ethical lapses have seen leaders losing their positions and companies causing massive financial losses to the society. Integrity is the cornerstone of great leadership which can inspire confidence in others to follow us. It is about being consistent in our values, actions, expectations of others, and outcomes. It is a commitment to do the right thi...ng and standing by our moral choices, even when the situation demands otherwise. What can leaders do to show they have integrity? 1. Show their values and live by their values 2. Live by their principles, even when in power 3. Respect others, especially those without power 4. Take responsibility for problems and mistakes 5. Listen to valid criticisms without being defensive 6. Fulfill promises, they also do not make one they cannot keep

03.01.2022 Managing a child's behaviour can be challenging for parents. Emotion coaching can be a useful approach to help both parent and child understand what underlies certain behaviours and build positive and stronger bonds in a family.
