24.01.2022 Stephen Blacker was only nine years old when he was raped by Father Gerald Ridsdale in the small Victorian town of Mortlake. In 2016, the Royal Commission hear...d the Catholic Church in Victoria knew of Ridsdales offending and moved him from parish to parish. Ridsdale, who is currently in prison, is one of Australias most notorious paedophile priests and has been convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse of 65 children over 40 years. In February 2018, in a landmark civil case, Stephen sued the Catholic Diocese of Ballarat and two former bishops for negligence, alleging they had breached their duty of care to him by allowing Ridsdale, a prolific child abuser, to move to the parish of Mortlake. Despite fighting Stephen on every point, the Diocese of Ballarat finally admitted the Church knew Ridsdale was abusing children as far back as 1975 and was forced to pay more than $1 million dollars in a landmark settlement. Stephens lawyer Judy Courtin told the ABC What is really significant is that finally, finally, we have proper accountability and some form of proper justice for Stephen. With all these changes, the bravery of all victims and survivors and their families, weve got this turning of the tables. Stephen Blacker refused to be silenced. His courage is beyond measure. #RevelationABC

04.01.2022 LONG READ - Brother Gregory Joseph Sutton was arrested in the United States in 1995. With the help of his religious order, the Marist Brothers, he managed to ev...ade police investigations for years. Sutton is one of Australias most prolific child sex abusers, sexually abusing boys and girls over twenty years. In 1996 he pleaded guilty to 67 offences against 15 students. Sutton was one of two Marist Brothers paedophiles examined in Case Study 13 of the Royal Commission. Suttons victims were provided with pseudonyms by the Royal Commission. We have used those pseudonyms here. The Revelation producers located Gregory Sutton in NSW. Following lengthy discussions, he refused our request for an interview. WARNING - This story contains descriptions of child sexual abuse. Gregory Sutton was born 19 March 1951 and joined the Marist Brothers as a 15-year-old. His younger brother Robert also joined the Order and would later become principal of the notorious Marist Brothers School in Hamilton. Gregory took his final vows in 1970. Sutton commenced teaching in January 1973 at Marist Brothers Primary School, North Queensland. The Marist Brothers have made payments to at least two victims who alleged Sutton abused them at this school. Another boy, ADO, was sexually abused by Sutton at this school. The principal, Brother John Holdsworth, told the Royal Commission that Sutton appeared effervescent and had a happy disposition. He also recalled seeing Sutton mowing a football field with a young boy sitting on his lap. Another teacher at the school, Brother Denis Doherty, told the Royal Commission that throughout 1973, he grew increasingly concerned about Suttons interactions with pupils. Doherty alleged that Sutton selected two or three children as his pets and groomed them. Doherty observed Sutton wrestling with young boys from Grade 4, taking children in the his car. Sutton had requested permission to take children to a holiday house at Mission Beach, Queensland. Doherty refused but Holdsworth agreed to allow Sutton to go with the children unaccompanied, but the next time ...he will have to take fathers. In 1975, Doherty wrote to Provincial Brother Howard. I am suspicious about Brother Gregory Sutton. I fear that he may be interfering with children. Howard replied, telling Doherty Dont worry too much about the Greg situation. We will be able to handle that for the next year. In 1976, Sutton was transferred to Marist Sacred Heart Primary School in Mosman, where he taught for three years. A lay teacher approached Brother Kevin Hopson, the Superior of the Mosman Marist Community and said it would be a good idea if Sutton wasnt left alone in the sports hall with children. Sutton would later be convicted of child sexual abuse against four boys from this school. In January 1978, Sutton was again transferred to Marist Brothers Primary School in Eastwood. Brother John Callaghan said Suttons behaviour was immature but didnt raise suspicions at the time. Callaghan observed Sutton taking young boys for drives in his car. Callaghan told the Royal Commission that Sutton kept his classroom door locked during class time. Sutton would later be convicted of offences against four students, all aged 10 or 11 at the time of their abuse. By January 1980, Sutton was transferred to Marist College Junior School, Canberra. No convictions have been recorded against Sutton but during civil proceedings brought against the Marist Brothers, eight former students have alleged Sutton sexually abused them. All eight have received compensation from the Marist Brothers. Sutton taught at St Thomas More Primary School, Campbelltown between 1983 and 1984. Two of his victims gave evidence at the Royal Commission, detailing their rape and indecent assault by Sutton when they pupils in his Year 5 class. In 1985, Sutton commenced teaching in Lismore at St Carthages Primary School. The school was run by the Presentation Sisters and the teachers came from the Marist Brothers. Sutton lived in the Monastery adjacent to the school, with five other Marist Brothers. Sutton was a train enthusiast and collected model trains. He had a large train set set up at the rear of the monastery. Brother Hunt gave evidence to the Royal Commission that he had observed Sutton bring groups of children to play with his trains. Sutton would sexually abuse several children after inviting them to play with his train-set. A lay teacher, Mrs Jan OGrady observed groups of children hanging around Sutton in the playground and throughout 1985, other teachers raised concerns about Suttons behaviour. In February, a mother complained that Sutton had been touching and rubbling her child on the upper thigh. The complaint reached the principal, Sister Julia OSullivan, who confronted Sutton. OSullivan warned Sutton about his behaviour and he reassured her it wouldnt happen again. He didnt deny the allegation. But more complaints emerged around Suttons sexual overtones with students. The school executive gave Sutton the following extraordinary written advice: 1) No children are to be in your classroom before or after school. 2) No child is to be taken from the school premises for any reason during school hours. 3) No physical contact is to be used as a way of social interaction with students, particularly female students. Brother Turton travelled to Lismore to deal with Sutton. At this stage, Sutton had sexually abused at least 24 other children and the Marist Brothers had received a significant number of allegations and complaints regarding Suttons behaviour. Turton would later tell the Royal Commission that he wasnt sure in 1986, an adult touching a child on her vagina was a crime. Brother Hunt, then Superior of the Marist Community in Lismore and deputy principal of St Carthages, gave evidence to the Royal Commission including an admission that like Brother Turton, he wasnt sure he was aware sexual assault of children was a crime in the 1980s. When Sutton was caught laying about taking an afternoon off school, Jan OGrady looked at his diary, left open on his desk. In it, Sutton had written Picked up (name of girl). What an afternoon. She is magnificent. OGrady called the Catholic Education Office, who suggested Sutton should take a month off work. OGrady then contacted John Kelly, director of Catholic Education for Lismore. In November 1986, the Marist Brothers sent Sutton to New Zealand to participate in a personal renewal course. Brother Hunt gave evidence that he understood Sutton was sent to New Zealand to address concerns that were being raisedpointing in the direction of child sexual abuse. On 30 April 1987, Sutton was finally removed from the school and placed in an administrative role in Drummoyne. He was then moved to a Marist Brothers residence on Mary Street, Hunters Hill. There were no restrictions placed on Sutton, despite the fact he was now living beside St Josephs College. In may 1987, Sutton was sent to see a psychologist in Melbourne. After several sessions, the psychologist advised the Marist Brothers there was no point continuing as Sutton was immature and unable to express his feelings. In early 1989, another victim from St Thomas More Primary School told her boyfriend what Sutton had done to her. The girl gave a statement to the police, alleging that Sutton had been sexually abusing her and her friend over a period of 12 months in 1984. In April 1989, Brother John Holdsworth became aware of the suicide of ADO, the man abused by Sutton during his first teaching role in north Queensland. A few months after the ADOs death, his father approached Holdsworth and said that before he died, ADO had confided in his brother that he had been a victim of Brother Gregory Sutton. The father asked Holdsworth to accompany him to confront Sutton at his residence in Hunters Hill. ADOs father spoke to Sutton in his bedroom and asked him if it was true and Sutton admitted that he had abused his son. Holdsworth reported the confrontation to his superior, Brother Alexis Turton and explained that ADOs father didnt want the matter reported to the police. He also noted that Sutton had threatened to jump off a bridge. Turton spoke to Sutton, who acknowledged he had sexually abused ADO. Sutton agreed he required professional help. Neither Holdsworth or Turton contacted the police following Suttons admission of child abuse against ADO. At the same time, the NSW Police were attempting to locate Sutton in relation to other allegations of child abuse. The Marist Brothers told the police Sutton had gone overseas and they could not find him. Now aware of the police investigation, Turton directed Sutton to leave the country immediately. Turton had already been in communication with the Southdown Institute in Canada, a treatment facility for paedophile clergy and the Marist Brothers decided to move Sutton to this facility. Turton was also communicating with Father Brian Lucas in relation to child sexual abuse amongst the Marist Brothers. Dr Ruth Droege, Director of the Assessment Program at Southdown, wrote to Sutton on 15 August 1989, confining he had been accepted into their program. In her file note, Droege wrote Greg was referred to Southdown because of sexual abuse of children, 5 boys and 3 girls, ages 10-13 from 1975 to 1986. In evidence to the Royal Commission, Turton denied spiriting Sutton out of Australia to avoid the police investigation and scandal. At Southdown, Sutton was diagnosed as suffering from paedophilia and obsessive compulsive personality disorder. Turton received clinical reports on Sutton, including this note on 7 December 1989 ...shortly before Greg came for assessment in September of this year, investigations began to surface regarding his sexual activities with children some five years earlier. No one from Southdown Institute or the Marist Brothers ever contacted the police, despite clear knowledge of ongoing investigations and Suttons many admissions of child sexual abuse. The Marist Brothers produced a document to the Royal Commission entitled Confidential Information Regarding Father Bartholomew for Tony Carroll of Carroll and ODea This document set out the career of Bart as a Marist Brother and teacher since 1969. Turton agreed in evidence that the subject of this memo was definitely Gregory Sutton. The Marist Brothers were found to have attempted to conceal the true identify of Sutton and hide their knowledge that they had known about significant allegations and complaints over time. Sutton crossed into the United States in 1991 and joined an elementary school as a lay teacher. In early 1992, Turton called Sutton and notified him that issued an arrest warrant for him. In July 1991, Sutton requested dispensation from the Order and Turton advised him on due process. Turton denies this was part of renewed police investigations. Sutton gave evidence to the Royal Commission that Brother Turton had told him to ...stay there and live your life. On 12 December 1991, school counsellor Timothy OReilly gave a statement to Detective Constable Donna Tipping at the Child Mistreatment Unit in Lismore. A pupil, ACU, had disclosed to him that she had been sexually abused on multiple occasions by Brother Sutton when she was 10 years old. Sutton raped the young girl in the television room of his residence, abused her in the swimming pool and on a beach. By now, the net was closing in on the paedophile. NSW Police had notified the US authorities, who were tracking Sutton. In October 1992, Sutton married his former psychiatrist, a nun called Barbara and he eventually became the administrative non-teaching principal of St Dismas Elementary School, Missouri. In August 1995, Detective Sergeant Wayne Magann, who had been investigating Suttons sexual abuse for four years, was notified that Sutton had been located in St Louis. An extradition process commenced and on 15 August 1995, Sutton was arrested in his home by two US Federal Marshals on 24 charges of sexual abuse against seven children in Australia. Sutton, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, appeared before a Judge three days later and was finally extradited on 29 April 1996. His wife Barbara accompanied him to Australia. Magann and Detective Lawrence met Sutton at Sydney airport and interviewed him the next day. He was charged and bail refused. On 26 May 1996, Magann and DEA Agent Robert North interviewed Sutton in Long Bay Prison, where he was charged with 39 additional offences. During the interview, Sutton confessed to all charges and revealed a further 39 sexual offences against nine other children. Gregory Sutton pleaded guilty to a total of 67 child sex offences and was sentenced on 8 November 1996 to 18 years with a minimum term of 13 years. The charges included: 1. 13 counts of rape of a child under 16 years 2. 53 counts of indecent assault or an act of indecency 3. one count of gross indecency A non-publication order was ordered and remained in place until Sutton was called to give evidence at the Royal Commission in 2014. On the stand, Sutton accused Turton and the Marist Brothers of covering up his abuse. He claimed Turton had spirited him out of the country to avoid arrest and scandal. The Marist Brothers also produced an internal report documenting an allegations of child sexual abuse made against their members between 1980 to 2015. Under cross examination, Brother Turton told the Royal Commission at least 10 brothers had admitted abusing children to him. Of the nearly 154 alleged or confirmed sex offenders on the Marist Brothers report, Turton had interviewed 52 brothers over a period of 17 years. In 2016, Sutton was charged with offences committed when he was teaching at Marist College, Canberra in the 1980s. On 7 February 2016, he pleaded guilty to the offences and was given a suspended sentence of two years and nine months. The Marist Brothers paid out $1,817,811 in out-of-court settlements relating to Suttons child sexual abuse. The legal costs of the Catholic Church defending Sutton was $250,888. Despite overwhelming evidence, Brother Alexis Turton has not been charged for his concealment of the crimes of paedophile Marist Brothers in Australia. #RevelationABC
