23.01.2022 Did you know InForm Osteopathy can help with your breathing? And THAT is important! A healthy diaphragm helps maximise your oxygen intake, with minimal effort. When it’s not working quite as it should, then your body begins relying on all its secondary breathing muscles (especially those around the neck). This can cause imbalances and muscle tightness, leading to pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back. So, if you’re experiencing tightness in any of these areas, come and see us we’ll get your breathing patterns sorted and have you breathing at max capacity again in no time. And exhale.
23.01.2022 Muscle fact: The SCM is a muscle that runs from the base of your skull, down the side of the neck and attaches to the chest and collar bones. It stands for: Sterno - sternum or chest bone Cleido - clavicle or collar bone Mastoid - a bony bump on the base of the skull... This muscle helps to bend the neck sideways and forwards as well as rotate the head. It is also the main muscle involved with the condition ‘torticollis’. Now, let’s be honest who knew this fact? for yes, and for no comment below!

22.01.2022 Ever taken a ball smack bang on the end of your fingers when trying to catch, forcing your finger(s) backwards? This type of injury can lead to a condition called Mallet Finger where the tendon which helps to straighten the end part of your finger ruptures or breaks away with some of the bone still attached. This leaves your fingertip in a bent position. Most cases of Mallet Finger recover well with splinting and hands on treatment to maintain function of the hand, wrist and upper limb. Who has experienced this before? Let us know below!
21.01.2022 Plantar fasciopathy is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a piece of thick tissue (similar to a tendon or ligament) that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. The inflammation is commonly caused by repetitive strain injury to that thick tissue. Things like excessive walking or running, or inappropriate shoes are common causes. Have you ever had pain in the arch of your foot? Give us a below (and then give us a call) we can help!
21.01.2022 It’s osteo word of the month time! This month’s word is ATLAS. And no, we don’t mean the book of maps. Atlas is the name given to the first vertebrae in the neck. It’s the bone which the skull sits on and is referred to as C1. It is shaped like a ring and has a close relationship to the second vertebrae, the Axis, or C2. Now, raise your hand if you knew about the Atlas?

19.01.2022 Do you have wrist pain following a fall on an out-stretched hand (otherwise referred to as FOOSH)? Seek medical attention quickly for a careful examination of the hand and wrist. These types of injury may lead to a scaphoid (one of the small wrist bones) fracture. A fracture to this bone becomes complicated if the blood supply to the bone is cut off. So it’s best to get checked out sooner rather than later! Most of the time we can help get you back to full function in the weeks that follow.
19.01.2022 Confused whether you should use heat or ice for treatment of an injury? Heat helps to reduce pain, increase blood flow, and relax tight muscles. Ice helps to reduce pain, reduce blood flow, and ease swelling caused by inflammation.... Both can be used for treatment of multiple injuries but need to be used at the right times depending on the injury. Speak to us today to find out more! After all, using the wrong one could do more harm than good.
19.01.2022 Have you been told you need a DEXA scan? This is a special kind of x-ray used to detect bone loss in our skeletons. People at risk of, or those that have osteoporosis may require a DEXA scan every now and then to check their levels and determine the severity of bone loss, which leaves our bones more prone to fractures. DEXA = Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Now that’s a mouthful!

18.01.2022 October’s Word of the Month is ‘Biceps’. Biceps means ‘two-heads’. There are two muscles in the human body that carry the name biceps and have two attachment points (rather than one) at one end of the muscle; the Biceps Brachii in the front of the upper arm, and the Biceps Femoris in the back of the thigh. Makes the phrase just going to work the biceps a little more complicated now, doesn’t it?!

A deeply important principle to osteopathy underpins this quote That structure governs function in the body. Osteopaths do not heal disease; we try to create the ideal environment for the body to heal itself.

06.01.2022 Protein junky? When we eat protein, our body breaks it down into small pieces called ‘amino acids’. These are the building blocks of life! The body uses them to make protein for growth and repair, as well as many other functions. Our bodies produce some of these amino acids (known as ‘non-essential amino acids’), but not all of them. We must get these ‘essential’ amino acids from the food we eat.Keep eating that protein people!

03.01.2022 Osteochondritis Dissecans or OCD is a joint condition that mainly affects children and adolescents. Many of the bones in our body are covered at the ends by smooth cartilage. This can lead to inflammation, pain and locking when the joint is used. If your child has these symptoms, book an appointment here at InForm Osteopathy and get checked today. What are some common pain spots that your child has complained about recently?
