18.01.2022 Is poor ergonomics causing your pain? This question is probably coming up a lot right now because so many people are working from home in improvised spaces. The concept of ergonomics is a body of knowledge aimed to increase efficiency and comfort in the workplace.... It is not an exact science by any means. Many people who have spent a fortune on fancy chairs, desk setup and ergonomic consultations will still experience a lot of work-related pain. However it makes sense to cover the basics and be intelligent about your workplace. But these are only ideas or suggestions. If you follow these guidelines and you are uncomfortable, listen to your body. The most important thing is to be comfortable. Whatever that means for you individually. So why do you experience pain? As always, pain is multifactorial and a protective response to perceived threat. What potential factors could be subconsciously threatening you? Here are some obvious suggestions Stress, workload and timeline pressure Lack of movement Increased muscular tension due to postural habits Ergonomics Workplace context / relationships and colleagues / environmental factors Does your body need greater strength to handle the physical demands of your workload? Everyone’s pain is a different story. The biggest part of a practitioner’s job is to understand that story so we can work together with you to develop the most efficient strategies to address your pain. Gone are the days of prescribing ‘correct’ posture, whatever that is. Military posture takes an immense amount of strength and energy to maintain for prolonged periods. Besides, a large proportion of soldiers complain of back pain. The mantra now is movement variability. Give your body as many options as possible (a sit-to-stand desk is a great option) and change postures to be comfortable. Try setting an hourly timer to remind yourself to move. If your pain is bad, you might want to try every 30 minutes. Practice body awareness. Often the biggest factor in someone’s story is simply a subconscious habit of holding unnecessary muscular tension in their jaw, neck and shoulders. This is a subtle defensive strategy we adopt under even mild threat. By practicing body awareness exercises we increase our skill in identifying this. The great part is that as soon as you are aware of these habits you will naturally relax this tension. Sitting or standing for 8 hours a day is physically demanding. The stronger we are, the higher our body’s capacity is to absorb this load. If you need support with your pain, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are offering telehealth consults and can help you understand your own story better whilst providing intelligent management and treatment strategies.
